- [00:00:05.970]2020 is certainly a year that all of us
- [00:00:08.440]will remember for the rest of our lives.
- [00:00:10.560]We've never experienced anything quite
- [00:00:12.140]like the COVID-19 onset and epidemic around the world,
- [00:00:17.050]and I'm so proud of the University of Nebraska's students,
- [00:00:20.570]our faculty, our staff, our alumni around the world,
- [00:00:24.650]for how we've stepped up and been resilient in the face
- [00:00:28.000]of this global pandemic challenge,
- [00:00:30.440]and while we can't hold Ivy Day personally
- [00:00:33.510]like we've done at the University of Nebraska
- [00:00:36.210]since the early 1900s, we still are celebrating
- [00:00:41.300]with all of you, the outgoing members of the class
- [00:00:45.600]of the Innocents Society and of the Mortar Board's
- [00:00:48.260]Black Masque chapter here at the University
- [00:00:50.530]of Nebraska-Lincoln as well as the new inductees,
- [00:00:54.350]the new upcoming seniors who are becoming the part
- [00:00:57.480]of the new classes for both
- [00:00:59.180]of our prestigious honor societies.
- [00:01:01.600]We wanted to celebrate this day
- [00:01:03.700]at least in this way with you.
- [00:01:06.370]So, you know, we all know, if you go back
- [00:01:09.910]to the early 1900s, at the time that the University
- [00:01:13.760]of Nebraska-Lincoln actually used to have kind
- [00:01:16.040]of a May Day event, the big event of the year
- [00:01:19.480]in our history.
- [00:01:20.750]The late 1800s, early 1900s, there would be a Queen
- [00:01:24.080]of May Day, a big Maypole first day of May event
- [00:01:28.350]on our campus.
- [00:01:29.400]That evolved into Ivy Day in the early 1900s, and today,
- [00:01:35.530]the Innocents Society is celebrating its 115th class,
- [00:01:40.510]and it's celebrating the incoming of its 116th class
- [00:01:45.240]as the senior honor society of the university.
- [00:01:48.080]Our Black Masque chapter of the Mortar Board Society
- [00:01:51.040]that originally started out as an all-women's society
- [00:01:55.750]changed in the 1970s to what is today
- [00:01:59.770]the Black Masque chapter of Mortar Board,
- [00:02:02.200]had its origins in that same time period
- [00:02:04.630]of our university's history as well.
- [00:02:07.410]I think it's probably safe to say that other
- [00:02:09.900]for a little bit of disruption during the Vietnam War,
- [00:02:13.200]this is the first time that we haven't been able
- [00:02:15.120]to actually have Ivy Day and carry the ivy
- [00:02:18.240]from the Champions Club that you would've done
- [00:02:21.000]over to the library for its ceremonial planting.
- [00:02:24.970]It doesn't make the significance of your induction
- [00:02:27.600]or your celebration of this past year any less,
- [00:02:30.810]and we want to let you know how proud we are of you,
- [00:02:35.220]how proud we are of the outgoing members
- [00:02:37.610]of both the Innocents and the Mortar Board Societies,
- [00:02:40.870]how proud and excited and eager we are for you
- [00:02:43.810]who are in the new classes that are
- [00:02:46.020]in the year to come that are ahead of us.
- [00:02:49.450]I wanna thank you also for the leadership
- [00:02:52.140]that you've exhibited to get to this point,
- [00:02:55.330]to be a part of these two societies that excel academically
- [00:03:00.410]in terms of service, in terms of leadership.
- [00:03:03.370]You are the true leaders of our campus
- [00:03:06.070]and the true leaders of tomorrow that will represent us
- [00:03:09.340]as graduates of this great university.
- [00:03:11.940]So, thank you.
- [00:03:13.320]Enjoy this accomplishment.
- [00:03:15.270]For those of you that will be back with us in the fall
- [00:03:18.470]in the new classes, we look forward to celebrating
- [00:03:20.730]with you in person when we have the chance
- [00:03:23.490]to do that when you're back on campus.
- [00:03:26.330]Go Big Red.
- [00:03:27.736](gentle music)
- [00:03:33.060]Hello, everyone, my name is Joe Manglitz,
- [00:03:35.430]and I am honored to have been invited
- [00:03:37.710]to be today's keynote speaker for Ivy Day.
- [00:03:40.640]Little bit about myself: I'm a 2008 graduate
- [00:03:43.560]of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:03:45.760]and a member of the 103rd class of the Innocents Society,
- [00:03:49.650]a proud former Knight Fredrick.
- [00:03:52.850]Also, when I was at the university,
- [00:03:54.660]I was involved in Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, ASUN Senate,
- [00:03:58.930]and a member of the Pride of All Nebraska Marching Band.
- [00:04:03.210]So, these organizations are important then
- [00:04:05.517]and have shaped who I am today.
- [00:04:08.120]I also was in the ROTC program and commissioned
- [00:04:11.360]after graduating and have been
- [00:04:13.470]in the active duty Air Force now for almost 12 years.
- [00:04:17.240]I am a bomber pilot, flew the B-52 for four years
- [00:04:21.670]and then have been on the B-2 stealth bomber ever since.
- [00:04:27.280]But most importantly, I'm a father of three now:
- [00:04:30.350]two young boys, age six and three,
- [00:04:32.470]and then we just had our baby girl two months ago.
- [00:04:35.880]And most interesting to all of you
- [00:04:38.010]is that my wife is an Innocent as well.
- [00:04:40.340]We met in college.
- [00:04:41.980]She was a member of the 102nd class,
- [00:04:43.940]and I was a member of the 103s, so, who knows,
- [00:04:47.380]maybe one of you will meet your lifelong partner
- [00:04:50.690]in either Mortar Board and Innocents Society as well.
- [00:04:55.610]These are concerning times, clearly, for all of us,
- [00:04:58.460]and I wanna thank the university leadership
- [00:05:01.670]for having the foresight and dedication
- [00:05:04.870]to stay committed to traditions like Ivy Day
- [00:05:08.520]and carrying on with those, albeit virtually.
- [00:05:12.580]You know, I didn't think I'd be giving this talk
- [00:05:15.320]in a makeshift office here at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas,
- [00:05:18.260]but I am happy to do it because carrying on these traditions
- [00:05:21.860]at the university are important, and along those same lines,
- [00:05:25.810]I'm gonna keep my message here the same as if we were
- [00:05:29.020]in person, and it's an idea of three Cs of leadership
- [00:05:34.810]that I've come across in my military career in education,
- [00:05:39.280]really learned it from the Army
- [00:05:40.670]down here in Fort Leavenworth.
- [00:05:42.870]People have written books about it as well,
- [00:05:45.510]but it's something that's universally adaptable
- [00:05:47.830]to any profession or society like the Mortar Board
- [00:05:52.330]or Innocents, so I think it's perfect
- [00:05:54.330]to talk about here today.
- [00:05:56.330]So, I will talk about some of those surrounding ideas
- [00:06:00.367]and then reflect upon my time in the Innocents Society
- [00:06:03.270]and how those relate, and then finally,
- [00:06:05.210]it gives me an opportunity to also thank three important
- [00:06:07.630]groups of people that may be watching this video:
- [00:06:10.760]the parents and support network of the honorees;
- [00:06:14.760]the educators, administrators,
- [00:06:16.710]advisors of Mortar Board and Innocents Society;
- [00:06:19.520]and then, finally, you, the honorees of both
- [00:06:22.250]of these great societies of the University of Nebraska.
- [00:06:26.920]Jumping right in, character is foundational
- [00:06:30.180]to each and every one of us.
- [00:06:31.700]It's not a mistake that it starts off these three Cs.
- [00:06:35.330]It's our priniciples, it's our values, it's what we live by,
- [00:06:39.510]and the good news is your selection to Mortar Board
- [00:06:43.230]and Innocents is a reflection upon that good character
- [00:06:47.050]that are the standards of those organizations.
- [00:06:51.070]That's also good news to the parents
- [00:06:53.860]and your support system, that clearly your hard work
- [00:06:57.240]and your development of these young leaders has paid off
- [00:07:01.090]in their selection of these two great societies,
- [00:07:04.730]but that character has to continue now,
- [00:07:07.420]and you have to uphold those standards of both societies
- [00:07:10.490]as you continue on through another year at the university
- [00:07:15.230]if you're staying on, or as an alumnus now
- [00:07:18.110]of the Innocents or Mortar Board,
- [00:07:20.770]so stay strong to those ideals in your character.
- [00:07:25.240]When I reflect back upon my time in the Innocents,
- [00:07:30.460]I think about all the good times and activities we did
- [00:07:34.600]in home visits and philanthropies and things like that,
- [00:07:38.260]but really what is most memorable to me is the character
- [00:07:42.910]of the individuals in which I served in the society,
- [00:07:47.730]of the utmost character and pushed me to be a better person,
- [00:07:51.980]so I challenge you to lean in to those relationships,
- [00:07:55.620]and if you're graduating, continue to stay connected
- [00:07:59.240]to the people in your societies
- [00:08:00.530]because it's gonna serve you well.
- [00:08:03.580]Next, talking about competence.
- [00:08:06.160]It fits well because this is an academic institution
- [00:08:10.460]that these societies reside in,
- [00:08:12.930]and they're focused on equipping you
- [00:08:15.990]with that intellectual competency to be successful
- [00:08:19.050]in your careers ahead, but these societies also offer you
- [00:08:22.650]a great opportunity to work on your social competencies,
- [00:08:25.620]which I would argue are almost equally important
- [00:08:28.460]in your life ahead.
- [00:08:31.020]So, I challenge you to work on those ideas
- [00:08:36.020]in whatever position you are in your society,
- [00:08:38.920]and reach out to each other, and be open
- [00:08:42.150]to any unexpected opportunities that might come
- [00:08:45.410]in this next year at the university
- [00:08:47.390]and as you start your profession.
- [00:08:50.630]When I was in the Innocents, I was a music education major,
- [00:08:56.100]and I also got the opportunity to have a pilot slot in ROTC,
- [00:09:01.170]so I had to choose between two very different paths,
- [00:09:05.270]and I was supported by those in my class of Innocents
- [00:09:09.170]and spoke to them about that choice
- [00:09:12.540]and really went down the unexpected path,
- [00:09:14.640]being a pilot in the Air Force,
- [00:09:15.840]and it has been an absolutely awesome opportunity
- [00:09:20.040]to serve my country in that capacity,
- [00:09:22.460]and so, any time we challenge ourselves going down
- [00:09:25.600]that unexpected path or that opportunity,
- [00:09:28.150]I think often, they can be the most rewarding.
- [00:09:32.240]And along those ideas of competency,
- [00:09:34.320]I do wanna take a second to thank the educators,
- [00:09:36.810]the administrators, and the advisors
- [00:09:38.650]of both Mortar Board and Innocents
- [00:09:40.470]and the important role you take
- [00:09:43.010]in giving these honorees the opportunity
- [00:09:46.330]to work on those ideas of competency
- [00:09:48.330]both intellectually and socially.
- [00:09:52.300]Finally, this idea of commitment is really important
- [00:09:55.250]to talk about when we're looking at these societies
- [00:09:58.760]because it gives me an opportunity to thank you,
- [00:10:02.270]the honorees, for your commitment to the University
- [00:10:04.860]of Nebraska, and that's why you've been selected
- [00:10:07.260]to Mortar Board and Innocents.
- [00:10:08.380]You wouldn't have been selected if you weren't
- [00:10:10.440]already committed, but I challenge you to level
- [00:10:13.080]that same amount of commitment now to Mortar Board
- [00:10:15.790]and Innocents and in the roles that you're gonna play,
- [00:10:19.060]and it's gonna serve you well, and it's gonna carry on
- [00:10:21.560]the important role that these institutions have
- [00:10:24.680]at our university.
- [00:10:26.390]Commitment embodies these huge ideas of trust
- [00:10:29.620]and loyalty and sacrifice, what you're willing to do
- [00:10:34.510]to the organizations that you're committed,
- [00:10:37.320]and I think it brings us to our current times,
- [00:10:40.580]these troubling times of a pandemic,
- [00:10:43.640]but anything that is troubling gives us an opportunity
- [00:10:48.480]to look for the good in it as well,
- [00:10:50.890]and I think this is a good opportunity for us
- [00:10:53.650]to challenge ourselves to what we're all committed to,
- [00:10:57.460]and I'm speaking to not only the students
- [00:10:59.280]but anybody that's listening to this.
- [00:11:01.530]We've been forced to pull away from the hustle
- [00:11:04.430]and bustle of our careers and the go-go-go nature of life,
- [00:11:10.250]and now, we have an opportunity to sit back
- [00:11:12.900]and think about what am I most committed to climbing
- [00:11:16.090]that corporate ladder or getting the best grade on the test,
- [00:11:19.910]or am I committed to the relationships in my life,
- [00:11:23.830]the friends, the family, or my spiritual fitness
- [00:11:27.870]or my physical fitness or whatever
- [00:11:30.780]is most important in your life,
- [00:11:33.790]this is a great opportunity for all of us
- [00:11:35.850]to look inside and evaluate what we're really committed to.
- [00:11:40.900]So, those three Cs of character, competence,
- [00:11:43.040]and commitment, I think, are important to reflect
- [00:11:45.790]upon here today and throughout your time
- [00:11:49.420]left at the university, or if you're getting ready
- [00:11:51.420]to graduate and take that step as an alumnus.
- [00:11:55.820]With that, I wanna thank you again for the opportunity
- [00:11:58.800]to be a keynote speaker here today.
- [00:12:00.960]I'm humbled and honored, and I look forward
- [00:12:03.790]to meeting you all someday in person at a university event
- [00:12:09.070]or a sporting game in the near future.
- [00:12:11.920]Take care, and go Big Red.
- [00:12:14.424](gentle music)
- [00:12:20.150]Hello, everyone, my name is Jared Noetzel,
- [00:12:22.140]and I have had the pleasure to be Vice President
- [00:12:24.200]of the Innocents Society for this academic year.
- [00:12:27.600]Although Ivy day physically cannot happen this year,
- [00:12:30.240]we hope that its spirit can live on somewhat in this medium.
- [00:12:33.700]For more than 100 years, the university has come together
- [00:12:36.500]and honored this traditional celebration.
- [00:12:38.840]This year marks the 117th year of the founding
- [00:12:41.530]of the Innocents Society.
- [00:12:43.570]Through this website, we hope that you will see
- [00:12:45.410]that one of the most vital elements of a great university
- [00:12:48.380]are the amazing student leaders.
- [00:12:50.530]I would also like to take this moment to thank the parents
- [00:12:52.900]of our outgoing and new members, as without your guidance,
- [00:12:56.090]we would not have been able to achieve these things
- [00:12:58.140]in our collegiate careers and beyond.
- [00:13:00.880]This year, the 115th class of the Innocents Society
- [00:13:03.750]hosted and won our annual blood drive against Iowa,
- [00:13:06.940]went on our annual Innocents Volunteer Across Nebraska trip,
- [00:13:10.780]decorated a historic train in Kearney,
- [00:13:13.130]completed monthly service projects,
- [00:13:15.150]and participated in homecoming festivities,
- [00:13:17.490]including having our chancellor appear out of a cake
- [00:13:20.180]and a rapid-fire delivery of the Gettysburg Address.
- [00:13:23.600]We have also had ample opportunity to bond as a class
- [00:13:26.740]through home visits, Margarita and Wine Club,
- [00:13:29.580]a not-so-ski ski trip, the 13 Days of Methmas,
- [00:13:33.320]and post-meeting hangouts, among many other occasions
- [00:13:36.110]we had throughout the year.
- [00:13:37.860]Obviously, this was not how our class
- [00:13:39.780]envisioned the end of the year would go,
- [00:13:41.860]but we are all the more excited
- [00:13:43.310]for our eventual non-Zoom reunion.
- [00:13:46.180]This upcoming year, our class will be moving on
- [00:13:48.600]to a panoply of exciting things, including teaching abroad,
- [00:13:52.400]graduate and medical schools, working at a national park,
- [00:13:56.140]enlisting in the armed forces, among many other things.
- [00:13:59.530]Whatever path we embark on, we will always look back
- [00:14:02.330]at this year we shared together and the lifelong connections
- [00:14:05.240]we built as 13 best friends.
- [00:14:07.820]This year, serving the university as a group
- [00:14:10.610]has truly helped us be the best people we can be.
- [00:14:13.560]We have also had the pleasure of selecting
- [00:14:15.410]and initiating the 13 new Knights
- [00:14:17.440]of the 116th class of the Innocents Society.
- [00:14:20.700]This new class is extremely dynamic
- [00:14:22.820]and committed to improving the university
- [00:14:24.730]through superior academic achievement,
- [00:14:26.870]unparalleled leadership, and selfless service.
- [00:14:30.400]These 13 new members have already blown us away
- [00:14:33.080]in their ability to work together as a team,
- [00:14:35.290]so we cannot wait to see the great accomplishments made
- [00:14:38.010]by the 116th class in the coming year,
- [00:14:40.600]and we have full confidence in their ability
- [00:14:42.680]to carry on and improve the traditions made
- [00:14:45.120]by the classes that came before them.
- [00:14:48.470]In addition to our new members,
- [00:14:50.030]I would also like to congratulate
- [00:14:51.430]our honorary member this year, Dr. Lori Romano,
- [00:14:54.440]as well as our outstanding seniors
- [00:14:56.440]underclassmen scholarship winners.
- [00:14:58.900]I hope all of you are staying healthy and safe
- [00:15:00.860]in these times, and I would like to thank you
- [00:15:02.580]for your continued support of the Innocents Society
- [00:15:05.450]and the Black Masque chapter of Mortarboard.
- [00:15:07.700]Thank you.
- [00:15:09.047](gentle music)
- [00:15:14.720]Hi, there, my name is Vinny Malene,
- [00:15:17.890]and I served as Vice President for the outgoing class
- [00:15:21.120]of the Black Masque chapter of Mortar Board.
- [00:15:24.480]It's unfortunate that, of all the years that Ivy Day
- [00:15:27.500]has stood as a university tradition,
- [00:15:30.470]this year happened to be one with a global pandemic getting
- [00:15:34.000]in the way, but nonetheless, I'm still honored to celebrate
- [00:15:38.720]the accomplishments of both honor societies,
- [00:15:41.940]even if it's from the comfort of our own homes.
- [00:15:45.130]And first and foremost, I'd like to thank the parents
- [00:15:48.450]and guardians who have supported us.
- [00:15:51.060]It is because of their close guidance and care
- [00:15:53.730]that we have been shaped into better people,
- [00:15:56.210]both at school and in the community.
- [00:15:59.111](upbeat music)
- [00:16:00.990]This past fall, my Mortar Board class kick-started
- [00:16:03.980]the year with homecoming festivities.
- [00:16:06.900]During the week, we raised money for the Team Jack
- [00:16:09.400]Foundation, competed in a group dance,
- [00:16:12.800]and constructed a giant float for the homecoming parade.
- [00:16:17.130]Throughout the rest of the year,
- [00:16:18.530]we visited a Mortar Board chapter
- [00:16:20.560]of the University of Minnesota,
- [00:16:22.880]hosted a People Who Inspire banquet
- [00:16:25.090]to celebrate our role models,
- [00:16:27.540]enjoyed a hot tub on a ski trip,
- [00:16:30.280]and fit plenty of hangouts at Iggy's
- [00:16:32.680]after our Wednesday night meetings.
- [00:16:34.691](upbeat music)
- [00:16:36.590]Many of my best memories from senior year
- [00:16:38.850]are forever tied to Mortar Board,
- [00:16:41.520]and I know that the people in my class
- [00:16:43.530]would say just the same.
- [00:16:46.040]Although our closure for Mortar Board
- [00:16:48.200]and for much of senior year looks different,
- [00:16:51.260]I place full faith in the next big things
- [00:16:53.630]that we accomplish.
- [00:16:55.580]I'm excited to see us crush it during law school,
- [00:16:58.830]Fulbright, med school, or any other future trajectory,
- [00:17:03.350]and I know that we can count on each other
- [00:17:05.260]as steadfast friends in the coming years.
- [00:17:09.270]I feel equally excited for the incoming class
- [00:17:12.300]of 28 new members.
- [00:17:14.650]Speaking on behalf of my class,
- [00:17:16.490]I am so proud of all of the imprints
- [00:17:18.820]they've already left on campus and in the community.
- [00:17:23.310]Their applications for entrance
- [00:17:24.920]into Mortar Board blew us away.
- [00:17:27.480]Each of them possess exemplary scholarship,
- [00:17:30.450]leadership, and service.
- [00:17:33.100]They hold an ever-deserving spot
- [00:17:35.120]in the Black Masque chapter of Mortar Board, so parents
- [00:17:38.280]and friends, you have every reason to feel proud of them.
- [00:17:43.150]I wish them good luck on their senior year,
- [00:17:45.520]and I know that they are going to have a blast.
- [00:17:48.126](gentle music)
- [00:17:49.690]I hope you are all enjoying some comfort
- [00:17:51.760]and even some downtime in your respective homes.
- [00:17:55.180]Please stay safe, and once again,
- [00:17:58.020]I extend a warm congratulations to all
- [00:18:00.840]of the incoming members of the Black Masque chapter
- [00:18:03.140]of Mortar Board and of the Innocents Society.
- [00:18:06.800]Thank you.
- [00:18:07.840](gentle music)
