Nebraska Innovation Studio has developed a prototype for a gown that can be used as protective gear by the Lincoln Fire Department and other first responders.

[00:00:03.850]and the health department heard about it
[00:00:05.770]and reached out to us and asked us
[00:00:07.990]if there was a way that we could help

[00:00:11.510]Most specifically, at least at first,
[00:00:13.670]firemen and EMT's when they go on scene,
[00:00:16.690]they wanted to have a way top better protect themselves.

[00:00:21.970]So I worked with the health department
[00:00:23.920]to prototype a gown using material that's common,
[00:00:27.540]which in this case is house wrap.
[00:00:29.650]The Tyvek brand house wrap.
[00:00:31.890]It's not porous and it's disposable and it's not expensive.
[00:00:37.890]So then we started to look at how we can mass produce these
[00:00:41.810]and we don't really have the capability here in the studio.
[00:00:44.520]So we reached out with the help
[00:00:46.120]of the health department to LPS
[00:00:49.192]and at McPhee Elementary School,
[00:00:52.290]the custodial staff are laying these out
[00:00:55.420]in their school gymnasium
[00:00:56.800]and cutting many of these at a time.
[00:01:01.190]So we also reached out to local community members
[00:01:03.130]that have sewing machines at home
[00:01:05.480]and wanted to be able to help
[00:01:07.100]with this crisis that we're in.
[00:01:10.030]So, we've kind of been a prototyping
[00:01:14.220]and a coordinating facility here
[00:01:15.500]where we're reaching out and trying to put the community
[00:01:18.450]in touch with each other for the wants and needs
[00:01:21.350]and just make things happen.
[00:01:25.760]One of the most amazing things to me
[00:01:27.070]was realizing how many people
[00:01:28.190]out in the community wanna help also.
[00:01:31.031]I mean we do a quick shout out via email
[00:01:33.560]or a news story and we have people
[00:01:35.470]just knocking down our door
[00:01:36.350]saying, I wanna help, I wanna help.
[00:01:38.570]So for me that's one of the most powerful things
[00:01:40.130]I've seen out of all of this is people really care
[00:01:41.730]and it slowed our world down a little bit,
[00:01:43.480]but I think people are reevaluating what's important to them
[00:01:46.460]and this is showin' it right here.
