- [00:00:00.780]Hi Huskers.
- [00:00:01.810]Wyatt Hubbard here.
- [00:00:03.290]And today, I'm gonna be teaching you
- [00:00:05.502]a little bit about LinkedIn.
- [00:00:08.560]So, first off, I think we should talk
- [00:00:10.880]a little bit about what LinkedIn actually is.
- [00:00:13.990]So, what is LinkedIn?
- [00:00:16.910]Well, LinkedIn is a social media platform
- [00:00:20.010]that's for professional use.
- [00:00:22.880]This platform can help you to connect
- [00:00:24.910]with employers, or can help you to connect
- [00:00:28.300]with someone who's already employed
- [00:00:30.200]in an area that is of interest to you.
- [00:00:34.050]Now, you're probably wondering,
- [00:00:35.629]"How can I use LinkedIn?"
- [00:00:38.420]Or, why it matters to you.
- [00:00:41.420]And here's why it should.
- [00:00:43.510]First off, on LinkedIn, you can find job postings
- [00:00:46.880]to help you better yourself for the future.
- [00:00:50.420]You can also have interactions
- [00:00:52.260]with potential clients, potential customers,
- [00:00:55.639]and colleagues as well as,
- [00:00:58.416]other professionals who are already
- [00:01:00.880]in an area that's of interest to you.
- [00:01:03.270]As well as, helping you to find jobs.
- [00:01:08.100]LinkedIn also has groups.
- [00:01:11.370]And groups are an awesome way
- [00:01:13.810]to get connected with others who are already employed,
- [00:01:17.850]or who are also searching for jobs
- [00:01:20.140]in an area of interest to you.
- [00:01:22.930]LinkedIn also showcases your online endorsements.
- [00:01:27.240]And, other people can endorse you in these areas as well.
- [00:01:32.460]And lastly, LinkedIn serves as an online resume
- [00:01:37.070]and business card.
- [00:01:38.840]It's a way for you to brand yourself
- [00:01:40.870]to companies that you're interested in.
- [00:01:44.970]Now, you're probably wondering,
- [00:01:47.177]"Well, how do I get started?"
- [00:01:49.830]Here's how.
- [00:01:51.300]First, you need to upload a headshot.
- [00:01:54.850]This can be a professionally taken headshot
- [00:01:57.770]or an informal picture.
- [00:01:59.950]But, you want it to be something
- [00:02:02.660]that showcases you and who you are.
- [00:02:07.060]Next, you'll need to develop a headline.
- [00:02:10.050]This will include key facts, personal qualities,
- [00:02:14.610]and it's intended to capture the attention
- [00:02:17.584]of your audience.
- [00:02:23.580]Your headline should be something catchy.
- [00:02:25.880]Something easy to remember, and something
- [00:02:28.090]that grabs the attention of the reader.
- [00:02:31.130]So, here's mine.
- [00:02:32.750]Career peer coach and student leader,
- [00:02:35.510]passionate about educating the masses on agriculture.
- [00:02:39.620]It states my passion, my position,
- [00:02:43.195]and my area of interest.
- [00:02:46.070]All, just in that simple two line headline.
- [00:02:51.280]This next part dives into a little bit more
- [00:02:54.010]of the nitty gritty things of LinkedIn.
- [00:02:57.810]So, how do I write my summary?
- [00:03:01.160]Well, your summary's going to serve
- [00:03:03.350]as a brief biography of yourself,
- [00:03:06.520]your past accomplishments, your experiences,
- [00:03:10.360]and the goals with your profile.
- [00:03:13.380]A great way to think about this
- [00:03:15.130]is to start off by using your elevator pitch.
- [00:03:19.020]And, this should be kind of a way
- [00:03:20.840]to brand yourself and promote yourself as a person.
- [00:03:24.790]This elevator pitch will be a little bit different
- [00:03:27.240]from your 30 second elevator pitch you normally give.
- [00:03:30.410]But, that's a great place to start.
- [00:03:33.240]Your first two sentences of this
- [00:03:35.920]should be something that entices the reader.
- [00:03:38.500]Give a few key facts, small details,
- [00:03:41.370]leave them wanting more.
- [00:03:44.260]And, your summary should also answer these three questions.
- [00:03:48.486]What do you do?
- [00:03:50.550]How do you do it well?
- [00:03:53.120]And, where are you going or how do you want to connect?
- [00:03:59.600]So, in the first part of mine,
- [00:04:02.039]I talked about a few qualities of myself.
- [00:04:06.580]And I state them in a way that is interesting to read.
- [00:04:11.090]Then, I dive into my education,
- [00:04:15.260]my passions, and my future goals.
- [00:04:19.730]The next part, I talk about what I'm currently doing,
- [00:04:23.590]and how it impacts me and the skills that I've developed.
- [00:04:27.970]And, what they could bring to a future position.
- [00:04:31.350]And then lastly, I simply state
- [00:04:33.790]how I wish to connect and what my goal is
- [00:04:37.880]for my LinkedIn profile.
- [00:04:41.500]A few other sections that you'll need to fill out
- [00:04:43.840]as you further develop your LinkedIn profile
- [00:04:46.940]are your Featured, your Background,
- [00:04:49.710]Skills, Accomplishments, Additional Information,
- [00:04:53.850]and Supported Languages.
- [00:04:56.020]And, I know this sounds like a lot.
- [00:04:59.030]And, it kind of is.
- [00:05:01.270]But, it's a lot simpler than what you think at first.
- [00:05:05.450]Most of these sections, if not all of them,
- [00:05:08.060]can be filled out directly from your resume.
- [00:05:11.520]And, it's all talking about you
- [00:05:14.620]and things that you've done.
- [00:05:16.850]Who's easier to talk about than yourself?
- [00:05:19.970]This is where you can show off a little bit more.
- [00:05:22.680]And, embellish a little bit more
- [00:05:24.550]into areas that you can't really fit
- [00:05:27.210]onto a resume.
- [00:05:29.135]A great way to get these sections all filled up
- [00:05:32.278]is to simply copy and paste directly
- [00:05:35.960]from your resume onto your LinkedIn profile.
- [00:05:39.950]It goes a lot faster than what you think, trust me.
- [00:05:43.850]You're probably wondering is,
- [00:05:45.421]"How can I share my profile?"
- [00:05:48.019]Well, there are a few different ways
- [00:05:50.530]that you can do that.
- [00:05:52.470]First way, you can share directly
- [00:05:56.130]in a direct message on LinkedIn.
- [00:05:59.940]And, you can also download your profile
- [00:06:02.950]as a PDF.
- [00:06:04.470]This is very easy to send in an email.
- [00:06:07.920]You can do both of these by hitting the More icon
- [00:06:12.006]from your profile page.
- [00:06:14.780]And, you can also share your profile link
- [00:06:19.100]which can be customized to your needs.
- [00:06:22.410]You should customize your link.
- [00:06:24.360]And, you should try to make sure
- [00:06:26.350]that it's just your first and your last name,
- [00:06:28.660]and avoid using numbers in there, if at all possible.
- [00:06:33.052]And, you want this link to be something
- [00:06:36.280]that's easy to remember or to write down
- [00:06:38.950]in a fast situation.
- [00:06:42.190]This link can also be included on a resume,
- [00:06:46.380]which is an awesome way for your employers
- [00:06:49.280]to get you in contact.
- [00:06:51.851]Now, comes possibly one of the biggest parts
- [00:06:55.399]of a LinkedIn profile, making connections.
- [00:07:00.240]And here's how you can make your first connections.
- [00:07:03.410]Once you get these first few steps
- [00:07:05.080]of your LinkedIn profile done,
- [00:07:07.360]go ahead and start making some connections.
- [00:07:10.940]It's helpful to start with people you know.
- [00:07:13.490]Family, friends, professors, past employers,
- [00:07:17.440]the list goes on and on.
- [00:07:20.050]Just simply search up their name,
- [00:07:21.958]give them a quick add, maybe look through their connections.
- [00:07:26.370]LinkedIn will also give you quite a few connections
- [00:07:29.051]that you may know based off of your past employment
- [00:07:32.680]or your educational history.
- [00:07:36.250]It's also helpful to find some groups to join into.
- [00:07:41.150]You can search these groups
- [00:07:42.420]based off of your interest areas,
- [00:07:44.375]and, which you will find within your account.
- [00:07:49.400]It's also helpful to find groups to join in.
- [00:07:52.791]You can search these groups
- [00:07:54.920]based off of your interest areas,
- [00:07:57.110]or you can also look at the accounts of your friends
- [00:08:00.400]and see what groups they are a part of.
- [00:08:04.100]These connections will help to build your network
- [00:08:07.830]and aid you in looking for future employment opportunities.
- [00:08:13.810]Got for you today.
- [00:08:15.510]Look forward to seeing you next time.
