- [00:00:04.144]And today we're going to learn how to start networking.
- [00:00:07.248]I know, networking can be intimidating at first,
- [00:00:10.475]but it's crucial to build your contacts early.
- [00:00:13.960]That way you have options when it comes to things
- [00:00:16.170]like reference letters for scholarships.
- [00:00:20.320]So first, you're going to connect with people
- [00:00:22.090]who are already in your circle,
- [00:00:23.500]such as family, friends, faculty, and staff.
- [00:00:27.314]You want to share your interests and career goals
- [00:00:29.720]with these people, so they get to know you
- [00:00:31.700]a little bit better.
- [00:00:33.300]And you're gonna wanna to go ahead
- [00:00:34.480]and ask them to share a little bit
- [00:00:36.210]about themselves with you.
- [00:00:39.822]Next, ask if they have connection
- [00:00:42.040]to someone who is already involved in the field
- [00:00:44.220]you're looking to work in.
- [00:00:46.060]See if they would be willing to make
- [00:00:47.530]that initial introduction for you.
- [00:00:51.209]Finally, set up an informational interview with that person.
- [00:00:54.782]Make sure to ask questions that connect
- [00:00:56.950]your career goals with their line of work.
- [00:00:59.660]This will help you determine
- [00:01:00.820]whether or not this line of work is actually right for you.
- [00:01:05.800]If you want help writing an introduction,
- [00:01:07.930]there's an example in the job search guide.
- [00:01:10.420]However, for a more personal approach,
- [00:01:12.990]you can make an appointment with a peer career coach
- [00:01:15.260]such as myself, Abby or Wyatt,
- [00:01:17.930]and we would be more than happy to help you write one.
- [00:01:22.170]So why network?
- [00:01:24.120]Why should you listen to me?
- [00:01:26.130]Well, first of all, it's a great way to access
- [00:01:28.810]the hidden job market.
- [00:01:30.051]By expressing my career goals to my advisor,
- [00:01:32.933]he was able to put me in contact with my current boss.
- [00:01:36.382]I was able to receive an assistant position
- [00:01:39.340]in the Animal Science Research Lab,
- [00:01:41.410]because I utilized my network.
- [00:01:43.900]Remember, it's not what you know, it's who you know.
