Description
Sink and float is a fun science activity to discover objects that are heavy or light. Children will begin to understand classification of objects by their weight and also improve their prediction and problem-solving skills when engaging in this activity. Some objects may surprise the children, so be prepared to facilitate additional learning and explanations to your curious ones! Have fun!

- [00:00:08.600]Hi everyone, it's a beautiful day, today.
- [00:00:10.650]Today, I'm gonna be showing you how to do a sink
- [00:00:13.230]and float activity.
- [00:00:14.650]So, I searched around my house for some different items
- [00:00:17.410]to use, that I can see if when I put them in the water,
- [00:00:21.410]if they're going to sink to the bottom or float
- [00:00:24.820]at the very top.
- [00:00:26.310]Here are the materials that you'll need.
- [00:00:28.070]You'll need a big, big bucket or something
- [00:00:31.290]to put the water in.
- [00:00:33.130]And I just found all these different materials
- [00:00:34.810]around my house, to see if they're gonna sink to the bottom,
- [00:00:37.970]or float to the very top.
- [00:00:41.690]Now, that I have my bucket ready, I'm gonna drop my objects
- [00:00:44.900]in, and see what happens to them.
- [00:00:47.410]First, I'm gonna use an apple, and see what happens.
- [00:00:56.470]Whoa, it didn't drop to the bottom.
- [00:00:58.300]That means that it's floating to the top.
- [00:01:01.700]Next, I have a little matchbox car.
- [00:01:05.560]Let's try it.
- [00:01:06.940](car dropping into water)
- [00:01:08.240]Oh whoa, that made a big clunker at the bottom.
- [00:01:10.850]It sunk.
- [00:01:14.560]Next, I have my marker.
- [00:01:16.610]Let's see.
- [00:01:19.330]Ooh, it's floating again.
- [00:01:22.820]Awesome.
- [00:01:25.350]I'm gonna try my next writing utensil, a crayon.
- [00:01:29.890]Let's see what happens.
- [00:01:30.886](crayon dropping into water)
- [00:01:33.146]Ooh, it sunk, just like the car.
- [00:01:36.150]How awesome, this is so cool.
- [00:01:39.700]Next, I have some wood chips.
- [00:01:43.100]These are from my backyard.
- [00:01:44.810]I think that they are going to float.
- [00:01:48.110]Should we see?
- [00:01:52.160]They did float.
- [00:01:52.993]My prediction was right.
- [00:01:56.810]Next, I have one of my dog's balls, that we like to play
- [00:02:00.000]with outside.
- [00:02:00.833]It's very heavy, so I think it's gonna sink.
- [00:02:06.100](ball dropping into water)
- [00:02:07.120]Oh, yeah.
- [00:02:07.980]Oh, it bounced right down there.
- [00:02:11.420]Next, I have a pencil.
- [00:02:14.560]It's not very heavy, so my guess is that it's going to float
- [00:02:18.550]to the top.
- [00:02:21.870]It did.
- [00:02:23.260]It's right over there.
- [00:02:24.093]It's right by the ball.
- [00:02:26.560]Next, I have a pair of scissors.
- [00:02:29.710]It's also kind of heavy too, but it's really long.
- [00:02:32.120]So, I'm wondering what's gonna happen when I stick
- [00:02:34.860]it in the water.
- [00:02:35.727](scissors dropping into water)
- [00:02:37.270]Oh, it was so heavy that it sunk to the bottom.
- [00:02:43.470]Next, I have some leaves that I found outside.
- [00:02:45.940]They're dry, so they don't have any water in them.
- [00:02:48.870]So, hmm, I wonder what's gonna happen to these leaves.
- [00:02:55.479]Ooh, they just floated above the water.
- [00:02:57.970]They didn't sink or anything.
- [00:03:03.470]Next, I have a ruler.
- [00:03:05.740]Again, it's really long, but it's very thin.
- [00:03:08.820]You see how thin that is?
- [00:03:10.800]I think it's gonna float, again.
- [00:03:12.650]It's kind of thin, like those leaves, so I think
- [00:03:14.740]it's gonna float.
- [00:03:15.600](ruler dropping into water)
- [00:03:17.140]It did.
- [00:03:18.330]Uh-oh, but look.
- [00:03:20.730]It took longer to sink, than some of the other objects
- [00:03:24.760]that I had.
- [00:03:26.230]Wow, that's a cool experiment.
- [00:03:28.700]The last thing that I have is a spoon.
- [00:03:32.370]It's really thin, too, but guess what?
- [00:03:35.330]It's kind of heavy.
- [00:03:37.890]So I'm gonna stick it in, let's see what happens.
- [00:03:39.010](spoon dropping into water)
- [00:03:42.240]It sunk to the bottom, too.
- [00:03:46.230]Wow, this is a really fun activity.
- [00:03:48.400]It was so cool.
- [00:03:49.390]Some of my predictions that I had,
- [00:03:50.520]they were wrong, but it was really cool to see
- [00:03:52.710]what happened to all of my objects.
- [00:03:55.770]I had fun doing my sink and float activity with you.
- [00:03:58.520]I hope you had fun, too.
- [00:04:00.180]Have a beautiful day.
- [00:04:06.501](upbeat music)
