- [00:00:00.000](upbeat music)
- [00:00:22.490]My name is Gary Lesoing.
- [00:00:23.800]I'm an extension educator in Nemaha County,
- [00:00:26.100]and also a Nebraska State SARE coordinator.
- [00:00:29.420]It was a pretty full day, I guess.
- [00:00:31.430]We started 7:30 and got back about 8:30 at night,
- [00:00:34.150]so it was very interesting.
- [00:00:36.062]We started, left East Campus in Lincoln at,
- [00:00:40.120]I say around 7:30, and we went to Robinette Farm
- [00:00:43.587]on Martell, Nebraska,
- [00:00:45.270]which is about 20 miles Southwest of Lincoln.
- [00:00:48.482]Between Lincoln and Crete, Nebraska.
- [00:00:51.130]Alex McKiernan and Chloe Diegel,
- [00:00:54.050]they have this farming operation.
- [00:00:56.120]They produce local food, some high tunnels
- [00:00:58.590]where they're growing different type of greens.
- [00:01:02.970]They have microgreens, they call 'em,
- [00:01:04.630]and at least it's organically certified,
- [00:01:07.880]and they grow a lot of tomatoes
- [00:01:09.650]and traditional vegetable crops as well.
- [00:01:12.890]I think they have over 80 different crops
- [00:01:14.750]that they grow, and they sell these with a CSA,
- [00:01:18.510]which stands for Community Supported Agriculture,
- [00:01:20.900]and also farmer's market in Lincoln that they sell at.
- [00:01:24.916](upbeat music)
- [00:01:28.860]Then we went to Rock Creek Aquaculture.
- [00:01:32.901]Scott Pretzer and his family, they're raising shrimp,
- [00:01:37.670]and it's also saltwater shrimp, a very unique operation.
- [00:01:42.240]They started in 2017, and we were fortunate to see
- [00:01:46.430]some baby shrimp that come in,
- [00:01:47.900]and they were like 1/8 inch long or so,
- [00:01:51.190]and I think in about five or six month,
- [00:01:53.610]they'll be ready for market (chuckles),
- [00:01:55.680]around there, so it's very interesting seeing.
- [00:02:00.240]They have to keep the water a certain pH.
- [00:02:03.060]And his daughter that's her job, to make sure
- [00:02:05.940]it's the right pH,
- [00:02:07.800]then also they feed three times a day,
- [00:02:11.050]so that's very important.
- [00:02:14.620]They have a backup system,
- [00:02:15.760]just in case electricity went off,
- [00:02:17.860]very high-management.
- [00:02:22.100]I think it's gonna work for them,
- [00:02:23.260]and they've sold a lot of shrimp,
- [00:02:25.170]and business is good for them.
- [00:02:27.913](upbeat music)
- [00:02:31.550]From then on, it was around lunchtime,
- [00:02:34.260]and we went to Lazy Horse Brewery and Winery,
- [00:02:40.650]near Ohiowa and Nebraska.
- [00:02:42.583]It was a beautiful setting there, and we had lunch.
- [00:02:45.610]They have a wood fire grill.
- [00:02:48.190]That wood-fired pizza that we had was very good,
- [00:02:51.080]and actually it was a special.
- [00:02:54.184]They aren't usually open at this time,
- [00:02:57.300]but they made their stops available for us.
- [00:03:00.910]So, they're getting known more and more.
- [00:03:04.817](upbeat music)
- [00:03:08.420]Then after lunch,
- [00:03:09.666]we went to Slezak Ag and Natural Resources,
- [00:03:14.470]which is a unique operation where they're trying
- [00:03:18.340]to develop a saw mill.
- [00:03:21.010]Kim and Gerald.
- [00:03:23.640]Kim actually has a degree in forestry
- [00:03:25.560]and has been a forester.
- [00:03:27.310]She's certified for several years,
- [00:03:30.070]and what they want to do is collect a lot of lumber
- [00:03:36.665]and don't let lumber go to waste.
- [00:03:38.840]And, they have a portable saw mill there,
- [00:03:42.330]and they'll be able to saw it up
- [00:03:43.220]and make kind of a lumber yard,
- [00:03:45.220]where people can use that, use in their home.
- [00:03:47.870]They're thinking about getting a kiln and drying it.
- [00:03:50.820]One thing they are interested in.
- [00:03:51.653]They received a grant from the forestry,
- [00:03:54.330]Nebraska Forest Service, to produce biochar.
- [00:03:58.260]Biochar just kind of the, I can say, charcoal
- [00:04:01.160]from burning wood, but mixed with like manure
- [00:04:06.130]and other compost.
- [00:04:07.404]It's a valuable nutrient you can put into the soil
- [00:04:11.040]and actually helped us, being research done with it.
- [00:04:13.890]But they wanna do some more and maybe produce biochar
- [00:04:17.820]in their operation.
- [00:04:18.830]So we spent some time there.
- [00:04:20.423](upbeat music)
- [00:04:24.380]And then we traveled over to Ralph Tate,
- [00:04:27.250]which is by Fairburn, Nebraska.
- [00:04:28.810]He has an interesting, about a quarter of a section there.
- [00:04:32.680]And it was cropland he converted into grassland,
- [00:04:36.757]and it's warm season grasses mostly.
- [00:04:39.640]There are some cool season grasses as well.
- [00:04:41.450]But he made that into a rotationally graze system,
- [00:04:45.970]and he custom grazes there.
- [00:04:47.450]He's been doing that for, I think about 10 years.
- [00:04:50.940]His neighbor puts Black Angus cattle on there
- [00:04:54.290]and they rise it and move the cattle once a day,
- [00:04:57.310]through the system
- [00:04:58.143]and actually there's increased in stocking rate.
- [00:05:00.300]You know, it's about one cow for two
- [00:05:02.390]and a half acres or so.
- [00:05:05.320]Most of the people in there,
- [00:05:06.420]it takes one calf or five acres.
- [00:05:08.170]They cattle are very docile and they have,
- [00:05:11.800]better feed and actually help improve their soil
- [00:05:15.150]by having this higher stocking rate.
- [00:05:19.140]We have this farm beginnings programmer
- [00:05:20.730]that we've been going since.
- [00:05:23.590]Think it's been about 10 years or so.
- [00:05:26.650]And he's actually one of the instructors,
- [00:05:28.120]for he talks about his holistic management, things he does
- [00:05:31.350]on his farm, and financial management as well
- [00:05:34.410]He's an excellent teacher, so that was a good stop.
- [00:05:37.083](upbeat music)
- [00:05:42.240]And our final stop for the day
- [00:05:43.480]was at a Broken Arrow Farm near Filley Nebraska.
- [00:05:46.260]This was Riley Reinke.
- [00:05:48.100]And yes, this is the Reinke Irrigation System.
- [00:05:51.090]His grandfather started a company Reinke Irrigation.
- [00:05:56.080]And he as a young man and has a farm,
- [00:06:01.610]its he's going toward organic.
- [00:06:03.920]It isn't organic, but he uses organic practices.
- [00:06:08.080]Sells vegetables at farmer's markets.
- [00:06:12.290]And he may have a small CSA as well,
- [00:06:14.780]but several different kinds of vegetables.
- [00:06:16.960]And he has like a equipment that he,
- [00:06:20.550]worked behind equipment
- [00:06:21.690]that he uses and it's irrigated land
- [00:06:24.910]that he sell or that he uses.
- [00:06:27.010]So it's very interesting.
- [00:06:29.010]He has some high tunnels that he uses as well.
- [00:06:31.930]And he's just kind of getting started
- [00:06:33.640]And he has some farmland,
- [00:06:34.945]that is organic as well,
- [00:06:37.210]in an area that he worked on to so.
- [00:06:41.060]And then we head on back to Linclon and so it was full day,
- [00:06:43.680]but I think people.
- [00:06:45.870]They got their money's work of it
- [00:06:47.560]and we hope we continue
- [00:06:49.700]on doing this as we move forward.
- [00:06:52.443](upbeat music)
