The impact of the coronavirus has created shortages across the country of personal protective equipment and other products. Nebraskans are teaming up to find solutions. UNL engineers working at the Food Processing Center at Nebraska Innovation Campus are working with the Nebraska Ethanol Board to produce this in-demand commodity.

[00:00:10.400]Now, ethanol has a different but equally important use.
[00:00:15.960]Ethanol is being used to produce hand sanitizer.
[00:00:19.560]The food processing center at Nebraska Innovation Campus

[00:00:28.660]Right now we can make 500 gallons an hour.
[00:00:32.716]We should be able to double or production
[00:00:35.380]within the next day to 1000 gallons an hour

[00:00:44.290]The operation came together about a week ago.
[00:00:47.230]Hunter Flodman from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln,
[00:00:49.760]College of Engineering came up with the process.
[00:00:53.100]One night Hunter didn't even sleep.
[00:00:55.200]He worked all night long.
[00:00:57.420]Thursday night I was up until 5:00 a.m.
[00:01:00.220]getting our FDA approvals done,
[00:01:01.860]so everyone has just rallied
[00:01:04.111]and it's been an incredible process.
[00:01:06.210]The Nebraska Ethanol Board
[00:01:07.860]jumped in to acquire supplies.
[00:01:10.580]They've been using their sources
[00:01:12.530]and their contacts to not only get us ingredients
[00:01:15.230]but also packaging material and also assisting
[00:01:18.430]with some of our process.
[00:01:19.840]Following a World Health Organization formula,
[00:01:22.500]the sanitizer is produced using ethanol
[00:01:24.960]and a few other ingredients.
[00:01:27.028]The finished product is loaded into 240 gallon containers
[00:01:31.630]and smaller bottles.

[00:01:35.820]It will be donated to hospitals,
[00:01:37.790]nursing homes, doctor's offices
[00:01:39.770]and other who need it most.
