- [00:00:02.770]When a bomb cyclone hit the state last year,
- [00:00:05.450]Nebraskans did what you'd expect,
- [00:00:08.180]they jumped in to help their neighbors.
- [00:00:10.620]The Nebraska Rural Poll reflects that can-do attitude.
- [00:00:15.080]A year ago we actually saw an uptick in,
- [00:00:18.100]sort of, sense of community.
- [00:00:20.060]And there was a perspective that,
- [00:00:22.690]how do you feel better in the midst of disaster?
- [00:00:25.710]Well, you tend to see community resiliency come through
- [00:00:30.220]and a lot of volunteers and a lot of helping neighbors,
- [00:00:33.000]helping family.
- [00:00:34.540]The annual poll is a survey of rural Nebraskans
- [00:00:37.590]on a variety of topics, including agriculture policy,
- [00:00:41.280]education, crime, health care and taxes.
- [00:00:44.790]The survey provides us a snapshot,
- [00:00:46.580]year in and year out, of opinions,
- [00:00:49.777]in terms of personal wellbeing, community direction
- [00:00:55.320]and various relevant policy issues and public issues
- [00:00:59.210]from year to year.
- [00:01:01.830]The survey was started 25 year ago
- [00:01:04.090]as a way to amplify the voices of rural Nebraskans.
- [00:01:07.790]Over the years, results suggest rural residents
- [00:01:10.740]generally believe life has improved.
- [00:01:13.500]But the survey also reflects
- [00:01:15.350]a growing dissatisfaction with some services.
- [00:01:18.720]Which means that some of the retail service
- [00:01:21.400]or entertainment options that used to exist
- [00:01:25.230]or at least they were satisfied
- [00:01:26.670]with a local merchant or outlet,
- [00:01:30.140]just aren't as widely available as they once were.
- [00:01:33.210]And so quality of services or availability
- [00:01:36.200]of services is a challenge that we've seen,
- [00:01:39.310]a growing challenge that we've seen year over year.
- [00:01:41.880]This year's survey will hit the mailboxes
- [00:01:44.050]of 7000 Nebraskans during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- [00:01:47.920]Some of the questions will try to measure
- [00:01:49.910]how rural citizens are coping with the social isolation,
- [00:01:52.990]compared with the flooding disaster of last year.
- [00:01:55.730]So this probably really does test that resiliency
- [00:01:58.753]almost in the different extreme.
- [00:02:01.630]Do we feel better under a physical disaster
- [00:02:04.440]where we can help?
- [00:02:05.430]Or under a public health challenge
- [00:02:08.480]where the best advice is to isolate?
- [00:02:10.730]That's a challenge for all of us.
- [00:02:13.020]Information from the annual survey
- [00:02:14.770]is analyzed and compiled in reports
- [00:02:17.330]that are shared with the local and state officials.
- [00:02:19.980]The Nebraska Rural Poll helps inform
- [00:02:22.380]national and local debate on policy.
