Making it safer to transport infected patients

[00:00:26.810]and at the time of this recording the outbreak of
[00:00:28.850]the Novel Coronavirus, COVID-19,
[00:00:30.960]has become a big public topic around the world,
[00:00:34.130]especially in the area of public health and safety.
[00:00:37.440]In February, Nebraska was at the center of attention
[00:00:40.440]with patients being transported to the
[00:00:42.790]University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha for treatment
[00:00:45.920]and Camp Ashland for a quarantine
[00:00:48.570]and it's not the first time that UNMC has been in the
[00:00:51.950]international spotlight with patients infected with Ebola
[00:00:55.130]being brought to the bio containment unit there in 2014.
[00:00:58.900]The University of Nebraska Lincoln College of Engineering
[00:01:01.200]is playing a key role in evaluating
[00:01:03.300]the processes used to transport patients,
[00:01:06.500]especially by the Defense Department in the Air Force.
[00:01:09.460]Today we're talking with Terry Stents and Kelly Herstein,
[00:01:12.100]they're faculty in the
[00:01:12.933]Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction.
[00:01:15.820]And they have recently,
[00:01:18.010]in the last few years done some work on a study
[00:01:20.940]with the Air Force's airborne bio containment unit
[00:01:23.760]involving the transport of patients who have been
[00:01:26.860]infected with an infectious disease.
[00:01:29.420]We're gonna talk to them about the processes involved
[00:01:31.990]and what they've learned about the
[00:01:34.240]process of transporting these patients.

[00:01:39.770]Now, what is it that you were studying
[00:01:42.170]and you were looking into in this project you worked with
[00:01:45.390]and who were you working with?
[00:01:46.920]This was a Department of Defense funded research project.
[00:01:50.470]The contractors with UNMC, the bio containment folks
[00:01:53.870]in the College of Public Health in the College of Medicine,
[00:01:56.820]and the whole idea of this study,
[00:01:58.430]over a one to two year period,
[00:02:00.880]was to evaluate the performance of the
[00:02:03.250]transport isolation system in terms of
[00:02:05.860]a whole series of parameters to make sure that the 24/7,
[00:02:09.240]this type of evacuation and transport of
[00:02:12.570]highly infected patients could be done
[00:02:14.770]and be assured that it would come off the
[00:02:16.870]way it's supposed to perform.
[00:02:18.920]And so our part was to play the human factors,
[00:02:21.610]ergonomics and safety aspects,
[00:02:24.482]for that particular exercise.
[00:02:26.630]You guys are both occupational safety,
[00:02:29.080]you're ergonomics, human factors experts.
[00:02:32.150]What things did you draw on from
[00:02:33.930]that experience in these projects?
[00:02:36.590]Well, we're both industrial engineers
[00:02:38.442]and so we have degrees from University of Nebraska
[00:02:40.960]in industrial engineering
[00:02:42.770]and we use a lot of the experience that we had
[00:02:45.580]into that education working with humans
[00:02:47.810]and ergonomics, human factors
[00:02:50.060]and we work with humans all the time in construction,
[00:02:52.240]so construction is a very human-centered field
[00:02:55.620]and that translated well to our research in public health,
[00:02:58.720]Terry, I talked to you previously about a project
[00:03:01.600]that you had done with iron workers,
[00:03:04.000]measuring the data about job site safety,
[00:03:07.510]was that similar to some of the work that was done
[00:03:10.210]in this project with the Air Force?
[00:03:12.460]The overall idea was similar in terms of human factors
[00:03:14.990]and safety but in that particular case,
[00:03:17.360]iron workers are at high risk for falls
[00:03:19.395]and when they fall,
[00:03:20.760]if they're not protected, they die.
[00:03:22.960]And we're very interested in studying their gait,
[00:03:25.430]when they walk along a steel beam,
[00:03:27.600]they're carrying 65 pounds of tools
[00:03:29.830]and safety harness stuff
[00:03:31.290]and they've told us anecdotally that
[00:03:33.840]the second half of their work day they're tired.
[00:03:36.450]And when you're up that high in the air,
[00:03:37.850]and you're walking around,
[00:03:39.090]your body movements,
[00:03:40.310]your gait, the speed that you work,
[00:03:42.070]and how you handle yourself changes.
[00:03:44.210]We want to analyze that
[00:03:46.030]and so we devised a series of experiments
[00:03:48.570]that actually collected data on the gait
[00:03:51.257]and the change in gait,
[00:03:52.880]as iron workers could walk across the steel beam,
[00:03:55.610]not at elevation,
[00:03:57.180]just up off the floor a little ways.
[00:03:59.150]And we've been studying that for about
[00:04:00.530]four and a half years,
[00:04:01.700]and we've come away with some
[00:04:04.130]real interesting things about human movement,
[00:04:06.562]kind of like a circus performer
[00:04:08.660]and how they can change these things
[00:04:10.640]and how we can modify the coatings on steel beams to
[00:04:14.150]make them less slippery.
[00:04:15.640]Because some coatings are more slippery than others
[00:04:17.660]and ironworkers will tell you that,
[00:04:19.300]but no one's ever measured it before.
[00:04:21.370]So we've done friction testing on
[00:04:23.360]different types of coated steel beams.
[00:04:25.610]And then we put human subjects with instrumentation,
[00:04:28.580]wireless instrumentation on their extremities,
[00:04:31.310]and have them walk these steel beams with
[00:04:33.640]and without tool belts,
[00:04:34.780]with only a toolbox or not.
[00:04:36.820]And we can detect changes in gait.
[00:04:38.505]And we can detect the amount the grade of friction
[00:04:42.030]that's on a steel beam coating.
[00:04:44.570]So in end, we can recommend architects and engineers,
[00:04:47.166]here's the coatings you need to do to make the job safer
[00:04:50.110]at elevation for iron workers,
[00:04:52.550]which we never knew before.
[00:04:54.440]Was there a lot of that similar stuff,
[00:04:56.940]similar things that were part of this DOD
[00:04:59.520]and Air Force study that you were studying surfaces,
[00:05:02.990]you're studying what the healthcare workers were carrying,
[00:05:07.227]those types of things.
[00:05:10.640]And then we've also done research with looking at
[00:05:12.450]locomotive train engineers and their fatigue
[00:05:14.950]and using self reported assessments on their fatigue levels.
[00:05:17.950]And we use that experience to draw on the
[00:05:20.270]fatigue levels of healthcare workers.
[00:05:22.470]There are slips, trips
[00:05:23.820]and fall hazards in this TIS operation.
[00:05:27.130]And we did identify a few things that could be improved.
[00:05:31.491]But we were very concerned about fatigue, crew fatigue,
[00:05:35.040]we knew these missions are going to be extremely long.
[00:05:38.660]Longer than train crews drive a train over the road.
[00:05:41.530]What would be a length of a mission?
[00:05:43.680]They told us 24 hours or more.
[00:05:46.620]Yes, because the mission begins
[00:05:48.270]when you leave the United States
[00:05:50.020]and you have to fly to
[00:05:51.230]wherever you're picking up your patient from
[00:05:53.030]and then bring them back
[00:05:54.380]and you're under high stress situations.
[00:05:55.730]You might be going into a situation that unstable.
[00:05:59.675]You might have a critical patient that's
[00:06:02.174]gonna require a lot of care.
[00:06:03.700]Right and unlike the iron workers who can,
[00:06:06.301]we assume can go home and sleep at night,
[00:06:08.403]these people that are doing the work here are
[00:06:11.490]up 24 hours or longer.
[00:06:13.280]Do they do they get much sleep?
[00:06:15.060]Do they get much of a chance to rest while they're in route
[00:06:17.920]either to their or back to the hospital?
[00:06:21.030]There are litter's setup where they can sleep
[00:06:23.720]but a litter if you think about
[00:06:25.390]if you've ever watched the show Mash,
[00:06:27.040]it's just cot that's stretched out between two poles.
[00:06:30.000]So it's not exactly comfortable.
[00:06:31.760]It's also very loud.
[00:06:32.970]There's a lot of movement going on.
[00:06:34.207]And so the quality of sleep,
[00:06:36.760]there was not an opportunity to sleep on the
[00:06:39.140]test mission that we did,
[00:06:41.592]but we did monitor their sleep using (mumbles)
[00:06:43.910]for two days before and two days after,
[00:06:46.920]to look at if sleep played a role in their fatigue levels.
[00:06:51.160]For instance, if you got a call
[00:06:52.930]and had to report for a mission within just a few hours
[00:06:55.560]and you just done a 24 hour duty cycle on an airbase,
[00:06:59.590]you don't get a chance to sleep.
[00:07:01.010]You go where you're told to go and you do the mission.
[00:07:03.550]And so we wanted to take a look at those factors that
[00:07:06.180]were involved in terms of sleep,
[00:07:08.030]refreshment, and preparation.
[00:07:09.700]In the military, you have to learn to do without sleep.
[00:07:12.510]And in this case, this is a high vigilance task.
[00:07:15.770]You can't dope off.
[00:07:17.110]You've got to really focus all your attention on the TIS
[00:07:20.420]and on the patients that are very sick
[00:07:22.850]that you're transporting.
[00:07:23.840]So this is a vigilance expertise task pushed to the limit.
[00:07:28.660]And of course, we were concerned about measuring
[00:07:30.670]and analyzing the effects on the clinicians during
[00:07:33.980]this type of activity.
[00:07:35.390]And it's fatigue,
[00:07:36.940]it's, I would assume nutrient related,
[00:07:41.536]You can't eat inside the TIS
[00:07:42.760]and you can't drink anything in there.
[00:07:44.350]No, but the crews during the data simulation missions
[00:07:48.610]were eating and drinking outside of the TIS.
[00:07:51.130]All aeromedical evacuation people they do
[00:07:54.480]similar type missions,
[00:07:55.560]not with infectious patients,
[00:07:56.610]but maybe moving people who have been injured.
[00:07:59.000]So they're used to having to make sure that
[00:08:01.480]they keep up their nutrition
[00:08:02.700]and their water intake
[00:08:03.840]because when you're at height you dehydrate faster.
[00:08:06.720]And not to mention wearing that much PPE,
[00:08:08.390]you're constantly sweating
[00:08:09.880]and you're losing a lot of water sweat.
[00:08:11.570]Your sweat rate is much higher.
[00:08:14.180]And we notice all the aircrew,
[00:08:15.830]our air crews have little backpacks,
[00:08:17.950]and they had water bottles on there
[00:08:19.560]and a little snack bars
[00:08:21.929]and things so they kinda knew how to handle that.
[00:08:24.270]But you can only do that outside the TIS.
[00:08:26.450]Then you have to clean up if you're going to go back in.
[00:08:27.890]You have to don all of your PPE
[00:08:30.740]or personal protective equipment
[00:08:32.420]and go back in there.
[00:08:33.400]So it's highly controlled.
[00:08:35.270]But if there's a breach,
[00:08:36.290]then all of that goes out the window
[00:08:37.650]and now everyone is in full PPE
[00:08:39.350]feeling the effects of that
[00:08:40.630]and maybe flying over an ocean there may be nowhere to land.
[00:08:43.550]And so you have to deal with that.
[00:08:45.460]Once a mission is done,
[00:08:46.660]they clean that entire aircraft and the TIS.
[00:08:49.560]They have special cleaning equipment that
[00:08:51.970]goes through and sanitizes everything.
[00:08:54.450]Imagine landing on an Air Force Base
[00:08:56.991]or a civilian airfield with a contaminated aircraft.
[00:09:01.330]So that's another whole set of problems there, too
[00:09:03.650]that they have to handle.
[00:09:05.530]We know this is a 24/7 capability of the US Air Force.
[00:09:09.300]It's at the direction of the State Department.
[00:09:11.170]So if somebody has the coronavirus,
[00:09:15.038]the state department wants the military to transport.
[00:09:18.226]This would be the type of equipment they do in
[00:09:21.285]the Air Force unit that they would task.
[00:09:25.950]But as of right now,
[00:09:26.790]nobody's reporting C-17 airborne to
[00:09:28.840]go pick up somebody in Africa.
[00:09:31.080]But that could happen tomorrow.
[00:09:32.200]It could happen in the next hour.
[00:09:33.350]They can evacuate the embassy in South Korea.
[00:09:36.373]They are they are prepped 24/7.
[00:09:39.800]This is a built structure.
[00:09:41.370]It was designed and tested to 11G's.
[00:09:43.880]That's a lot of mechanical engineering.
[00:09:46.360]There's a lot of HVAC,
[00:09:47.970]heating ventilation air conditioning type,
[00:09:51.620]This is an engineered environment.
[00:09:54.220]It has to perform a strict,
[00:09:56.250]highly infectious clinical job by humans for humans.
[00:10:01.750]And then you need to be able to offload it,
[00:10:04.060]put it in a hangar where it can go be disinfected,
[00:10:06.900]and then load people onto the aircraft
[00:10:09.610]or a tank or whatever else in a matter of minutes.
[00:10:13.250]You can't just contaminate the entire plane.
[00:10:15.160]This is a flying medical engineering system.
[00:10:20.410]It has to all work.
[00:10:22.843]And we're not talking about small aircraft,
[00:10:25.430]we're talking cargo planes that carry thousands
[00:10:29.160]and thousands of pounds of equipment,
[00:10:31.160]typically tanks and motorized vehicles and the like.
[00:10:35.210]So how big are these planes
[00:10:37.340]and how big are the TIS's that
[00:10:39.891]are used to transport the patients?
[00:10:41.410]Well, the C-17 is,
[00:10:43.505]the next largest aircraft would be a C-5 Galaxy,
[00:10:46.910]the one with the big nose that opens up.
[00:10:49.290]So we're talking about a very large transport aircraft
[00:10:52.740]that needs quite a bit of runway.
[00:10:54.750]The TIS units themselves are about 20 feet long,
[00:10:58.262]maybe eight feet wide,
[00:11:03.201]and maybe seven feet tall.
[00:11:04.034]They are kits that can be disassembled and reassembled.
[00:11:07.460]They are transportable in the racking
[00:11:09.370]and rail system inside of a military aircraft.
[00:11:12.670]And once you load those in the aircraft,
[00:11:15.680]it fills up pretty much the entire cargo bay.
[00:11:18.820]There's not a lot of room to move around.
[00:11:21.330]And all of the powered equipment,
[00:11:23.770]the air handling, the air filtering,
[00:11:26.520]the electrical, the electronics,
[00:11:28.700]all of those things is on the outside of the TIS.
[00:11:31.560]So you have this rectangular box envelope with
[00:11:35.570]all of this stuff on the outside.
[00:11:37.470]Once again, the boundaries are really important to maintain.
[00:11:40.440]It's a difficult built environment very much unlike most of
[00:11:44.420]what we're used to seeing in construction,
[00:11:46.620]except in the bio-containment unit at the hospital.
[00:11:50.060]And then you have to say,
[00:11:50.893]"what if we had to do that portable?"
[00:11:53.350]What kind of a structure would you have?
[00:11:55.290]How could you knock it down and build it back up?
[00:11:57.440]How could you clean it?
[00:11:58.700]How could you transport it from one one place to another?
[00:12:01.020]How could you store it for a long period of time,
[00:12:03.380]and then bring it out on a moment's notice,
[00:12:05.410]put it together, load it,
[00:12:07.000]make sure it all works
[00:12:08.260]and go airborne.
[00:12:09.640]This is a real performance trick.
[00:12:11.920]And that's what the Air Force does.
[00:12:13.740]Did that inform maybe some processes that
[00:12:17.090]the Air Force is using?
[00:12:18.210]And what kind of recommendations did you make?
[00:12:21.020]From our end probably a couple three recommendations.
[00:12:23.810]One is how crucial training is.
[00:12:26.660]Train, train, train.
[00:12:28.570]And one thing that is a concern is that
[00:12:31.960]when you have a military team that's trained to
[00:12:35.765]be able to deploy like this on a mission,
[00:12:38.400]they have to have continuity.
[00:12:40.973]In the military, you get transferred all around.
[00:12:43.839]So training is a huge issue.
[00:12:45.622]The second thing I think that we were able to do is
[00:12:48.082]point out how important continuing to work on
[00:12:49.640]ergonomics and safety is,
[00:12:51.440]We can't just stop here.
[00:12:53.653]We've got to keep making things better and better.
[00:12:56.230]And I think we put that on the radar screen.
[00:12:58.432]And I think the Air Force is going to
[00:13:00.226]have that on the radar screen
[00:13:02.108]and working with it for a long time to come.
[00:13:04.855]Probably the third thing we showed was that
[00:13:07.350]vigilance was pretty good.
[00:13:09.570]It wasn't perfect,
[00:13:10.410]but it was pretty good.
[00:13:11.243]We learned a lot about that.
[00:13:12.660]And secondly, that the biomechanical stressors
[00:13:15.420]on crew members was somewhat moderate,
[00:13:18.302]but some of the patient handling put a lot of back strain,
[00:13:22.360]a lot of shoulder strain on these folks.
[00:13:24.110]And you don't want these highly trained people
[00:13:27.220]to be injured.
[00:13:28.410]They've got to be able to perform.
[00:13:30.670]And so we pointed out some things that could
[00:13:32.330]be done there in patient handling,
[00:13:34.300]and maybe future modification of the TIS that
[00:13:36.370]would make the biomechanical stressors less.
[00:13:40.040]Kelly actually got to observe a mission.
[00:13:42.264]You were part of a flight mission,
that was a simulation.
[00:13:47.290]Tell us about that mission and what you observed.
[00:13:51.050]Yes, so it was very exciting.
[00:13:52.330]I got to fly with the aeromedical evacuation team
[00:13:55.500]and our partners, UNMC,
[00:13:57.890]and observed what was happening.
[00:14:00.610]And do testing at mid flight,
[00:14:02.900]which was pretty exciting.
[00:14:04.040]We had simulation patients.
[00:14:05.850]And so they were,
[00:14:06.840]we had real humans
[00:14:07.673]and we also had some mannequins
[00:14:08.730]and so simulating different scenarios that could happen.
[00:14:11.929]I'd never been on a military aircraft before.
[00:14:14.330]And so this was a new experience for me.
[00:14:15.640]I had been to Offutt a few times,
[00:14:18.090]but going to another Air Force Base,
[00:14:19.700]seeing the rows and rows of C-17.
[00:14:22.600]Just understanding how large those aircraft are.
[00:14:25.620]You go to SAC Airbase Museum over in Ashland,
[00:14:27.970]and those are some pretty impressive aircraft,
[00:14:29.650]but then you go see a C-17.
[00:14:30.860]It's a whole different ball of wax there.
[00:14:33.420]But these teams are really dedicated to what they do.
[00:14:36.900]And they're highly specialized.
[00:14:39.060]They were really happy that we were there
[00:14:41.500]doing this research.
[00:14:42.350]They had a lot of really great feedback.
[00:14:44.430]We were able to give some really solid recommendations
[00:14:47.120]that we think will help them
[00:14:47.973]but it was pretty exciting to be able to do that.
[00:14:50.360]I will say taking off
[00:14:51.330]and landing without any windows is definitely a thrill.
[00:14:54.468]But it was exciting.
[00:14:55.850]Trying to recall, Kelly,
[00:14:56.770]did the missions start at Offutt
[00:14:58.090]or do they start in Charleston?
[00:14:59.230]It started in Charleston,
[00:15:00.630]flew over the Great Lakes just to add some more time
[00:15:03.370]because it's only a four hour flight between
[00:15:05.860]Charleston and Offutt.
[00:15:07.030]So we spent about eight hours just kind of
[00:15:10.960]moseying around the Great Lakes.
[00:15:12.160]I got to go up in the cockpit,
[00:15:14.781]look out the window,
[00:15:15.614]talk to the pilots
[00:15:16.658]and just kinda see flying in a whole different perspective.
[00:15:19.730]Also looking at how the pilots are able to sleep mid flight
[00:15:22.770]and talking to them giving them some recommendations on
[00:15:25.473]or just learning about how they do these long haul flights.
[00:15:29.660]Because this is very common for C-17 pilot to
[00:15:32.135]fly all over the world in long haul flights.
[00:15:35.450]And then on the way back,
[00:15:36.730]there were some storms coming in.
[00:15:38.070]And so we took the direct route home
[00:15:39.940]and ended up having some turbulence,
[00:15:41.350]which was great because,
[00:15:42.563]well it was a little scary I will say
[00:15:44.730]to be on a cargo flight during turbulence,
[00:15:47.206]but to be able to have that as part of our simulation
[00:15:49.900]and see what was kinda a worst case scenario
[00:15:52.197]that could happen
[00:15:53.762]and simulate some power failures landed in Charleston,
[00:15:57.470]ended up having some bad weather
[00:15:59.180]and we got stuck on the plane for about an hour and a half
[00:16:01.460]because of a lightning storm.
[00:16:02.830]But it gave us the opportunity to
[00:16:03.930]spend more time with the aeromedical evacuation team
[00:16:08.890]and figure out what how we can make the best suggestions.
[00:16:13.007]They eventually landed in Offutt,
[00:16:14.960]offloaded patients and dummies or mannequins.
[00:16:18.300]And then they went airborne
[00:16:19.460]and flew back to Charleston.
[00:16:20.950]So it was like a round robin.
[00:16:23.300]And Terry and a team from the Med Center met us
[00:16:26.418]on the runway at Offutt to observe the offloading
[00:16:29.615]and to make recommendations for EMS.
[00:16:32.729]Have these recommendations been received from
[00:16:36.350]the Air Force?
[00:16:37.183]Were they surprised at some of the findings?
[00:16:38.589]But what was the reaction I guess?
[00:16:41.270]I think the Air Force's reaction was very professional.
[00:16:43.979]Everything we did was very well received
[00:16:46.770]and the things we confirm they were very happy with
[00:16:48.980]and it confirmed what they thought they knew.
[00:16:51.210]And things that we pointed out that could stand some
[00:16:53.860]continuous improvement, like any system,
[00:16:56.080]were also very much appreciated.
[00:16:57.480]We totally enjoyed working with the Air Force.
[00:16:59.661]We think in the long run the engineering college has
[00:17:02.908]a vital role in helping solve military problems.
[00:17:06.753]And we want to continue
[00:17:08.980]and we think it was very positive
[00:17:10.440]and my impression from everybody in the Air Force
[00:17:12.535]that this was worth doing,
[00:17:14.300]and that they would rely on us again to help them.
[00:17:16.523]It's nice to have Offutt here have that connection.
[00:17:19.147]You both had mentioned that
[00:17:20.941]you're trained in public health.
[00:17:23.090]I'm a certified professional ergonomist.
[00:17:25.340]It's a fairly rigorous process.
[00:17:27.760]For over a period of years,
[00:17:29.250]you have to have at least one graduate degree in this area.
[00:17:32.490]Most of us are engineers,
[00:17:34.350]some are psychologists.
[00:17:35.482]And there's two eight hour exams like PE
[00:17:38.693]either pass or you don't.
[00:17:40.710]I've been doing this for almost 30 years now.
[00:17:44.410]And I met Terry through
[00:17:46.270]my studies in industrial engineering.
[00:17:47.510]I met him while I was studying for my master's degree.
[00:17:50.240]And he's really been a tremendous mentor for me,
[00:17:54.065]got me interested in public health
[00:17:56.240]and I'm now studying so that I can be
[00:17:58.770]a certified professional ergonomist.
[00:17:59.880]Which is quite the journey.
[00:18:02.400]It's gonna take me several years to get there.
[00:18:05.240]But without his leadership I never,
[00:18:07.234]Mentoring, mentoring, mentoring.
[00:18:10.465]That's one of the key things here.
[00:18:13.010]But for students who are interested in engineering,
[00:18:16.360]what would be the advantages of going into a
[00:18:19.340]public health field for them as engineers?
[00:18:22.570]Because we're always going to need engineering
[00:18:24.100]and we're always going to need public health.
[00:18:26.040]The problems just keep growing,
[00:18:27.840]and we solve one problem
[00:18:29.100]and a new problem pops up again.

[00:19:27.840]primarily are from biological systems engineering.
[00:19:30.750]But the other engineering disciplines could do this, too.

[00:19:37.220]we are the ones that can show them how we did it.
[00:19:39.930]And I think the outcomes would be very good.
[00:19:41.962]We have an MPH degree graduate,
[00:19:44.560]Corey Sennic from Biological Systems Engineering,
[00:19:47.580]who is now a Regional VA Hospital Director as
[00:19:50.820]a certified industrial hygienist in California.
[00:19:53.240]She was in Omaha,
[00:19:54.870]and she did so well she got promoted.
[00:19:56.620]So there's engineers in the in the VA hospital system.
[00:20:01.959]And now as far as this project goes,
[00:20:03.721]what's the future worse?
[00:20:05.590]Where's this headed from here?
[00:20:07.109]They know we're here.
[00:20:08.800]They know the group at UNMC is here.
[00:20:11.260]And all they have to do is pick up the phone
[00:20:13.220]and say we've got another project,

[00:20:16.320]In the meantime, Kelly and I are
[00:20:17.710]working with environmental safety health,
[00:20:19.960]on the Offutt Air Force Base
[00:20:21.570]and safety and ergonomics problems as outreach.
[00:20:24.840]And we're just setting up a project now to
[00:20:27.703]get involved with them over the summer.
[00:20:29.943]And we just finished a project with them looking at
[00:20:33.980]lower back injuries and material handling.
[00:20:36.620]Inside of aircraft,
[00:20:37.570]which is very strenuous.
[00:20:39.640]I've also had a couple of military students who
[00:20:41.770]finished their MPH at the UNMC College of Public Health
[00:20:46.060]and they are now on active duty doing these things.
[00:20:48.707]So we've been faculty advisors,
[00:20:53.530]degree program advisors,
[00:20:55.960]and mentors for the full time active duty military people
[00:20:59.970]who get the MPH degree like what we have
[00:21:02.010]and then go back to active duty
[00:21:03.840]and serve in that capacity.
[00:21:05.610]So the military is ramped up to want more of
[00:21:08.470]these things as well inside their active duty component.
