- [00:00:05.820]Hello, my name is Joe Roy,
- [00:00:08.470]and I'm the business development specialist
- [00:00:10.500]with the Nebraska Manufacturing Extension Partnership.
- [00:00:13.950]The Supervisor Development program that we offer
- [00:00:16.410]at the Nebraska MEP is a leadership development program
- [00:00:20.250]designed to help supervisors and team leaders
- [00:00:23.160]with the ability to both lead, instruct,
- [00:00:26.250]and improve the methods of their jobs.
- [00:00:30.440]We have found that there are three needs of a supervisor.
- [00:00:33.810]One is in the area of leadership,
- [00:00:36.080]which you will find in our Job Relations training.
- [00:00:38.960]The second is the ability to use good instructions,
- [00:00:42.560]which you will find in using our Job Instructions program.
- [00:00:45.830]And the third is continuous improvement
- [00:00:47.860]or process improvement,
- [00:00:49.490]which you will find in our Job Methods program.
- [00:00:53.430]All three of these programs form a three-legged stool
- [00:00:57.780]using a four-step method
- [00:00:59.760]that will help us train these supervisors.
- [00:01:04.410]As I mentioned, the Job Relations training program
- [00:01:07.210]teaches supervisors how to evaluate, take proper actions,
- [00:01:11.800]and handle and prevent people problems
- [00:01:14.310]while learning better communication skills.
- [00:01:17.120]The Job Instruction training teaches supervisors
- [00:01:20.150]how to quickly train employees
- [00:01:22.170]to do a job correctly, safely, and conscientiously,
- [00:01:26.740]as well as doing a job in a repeatable way
- [00:01:29.700]so that it doesn't matter whether they themselves
- [00:01:32.270]or one of their leads is actually showing
- [00:01:34.450]how to do a specific job.
- [00:01:36.670]The third program, the Job Methods program, takes a job
- [00:01:40.360]and teaches supervisors how to break it down
- [00:01:42.470]and continuously improve the way that this job is done.
- [00:01:47.250]Each program uses a similar four-step method.
- [00:01:51.140]The method is talked about in shop terms,
- [00:01:53.670]not in academic language.
- [00:01:55.600]And each participant as they learn this method is able
- [00:01:58.950]to use it to solve a current problem in class
- [00:02:01.390]and to get immediate use and acceptance of their methods.
- [00:02:06.120]This slide shows our four-step method broken down
- [00:02:09.550]between the three different instructions,
- [00:02:11.660]Job Instruction, Job Methods, and Job Relations,
- [00:02:14.930]and shows how we prepare, present, apply,
- [00:02:18.760]and then test each of these methods as we use 'em.
- [00:02:22.120]It is very similar to the PDCA cycle
- [00:02:24.830]that some people have used, which is plan, do, check, act,
- [00:02:28.770]or the scientific method of problem-solving
- [00:02:31.600]that some organizations use.
- [00:02:35.270]We have found by offering these programs
- [00:02:39.260]that people have better relationships with their employees
- [00:02:41.810]when they're through with some of these.
- [00:02:43.830]They also find it an easier, more basic way
- [00:02:46.770]of diagnosing employee problems,
- [00:02:50.270]which leads to fewer employee problems
- [00:02:52.480]and to better job performance by the individual,
- [00:02:55.400]which leads to higher productivity,
- [00:02:57.230]better quality, lower cost, and on-time delivery.
- [00:03:01.810]Additionally, we have found that problems
- [00:03:03.830]that tend to linger, they are solved much quicker,
- [00:03:07.470]and they're solved before they get larger.
- [00:03:10.050]There's a better culture in the workforce.
- [00:03:12.550]The attitudes, the motivation, the teamwork
- [00:03:14.470]between individuals is much stronger.
- [00:03:16.890]And they have an improved capability of handling problems
- [00:03:20.070]and in heading off future problems.
- [00:03:23.560]Part of our training is done using four different ways.
- [00:03:28.260]We will tell.
- [00:03:29.093]We will go through some PowerPoint explanations
- [00:03:31.330]of how our training works.
- [00:03:33.130]We will show.
- [00:03:33.963]We have some hands-on demonstration models.
- [00:03:36.570]We illustrate.
- [00:03:37.810]We explain with written materials role-playing, et cetera
- [00:03:42.860]to help them understand how to use this.
- [00:03:45.150]And then of course the biggest one is questions and answers
- [00:03:47.870]that go between the participants in the program
- [00:03:51.650]and the instructors that are teaching the program.
- [00:03:55.270]There's an old Chinese proverb that goes like this:
- [00:03:58.677]"Tell me and I'll forget; show me and I may remember;
- [00:04:02.807]"involve me and I'll understand."
- [00:04:05.660]We have found that by using our program
- [00:04:08.140]and getting people involved,
- [00:04:09.840]we end up helping companies become much more productive.
- [00:04:14.210]Thank you for taking a few moments to visit us
- [00:04:17.080]and to watch this video to learn a little bit more
- [00:04:19.440]about our Supervisor Development programs.
