- [00:01:37.240]over the summer.
- [00:01:38.890]If you fail to pay either enrollment deposit

- [00:02:06.140]and which classes to register for.
- [00:02:08.780]The registration deadline is June 22nd.
- [00:02:12.150]If you will be out of the country
- [00:02:13.720]or unavailable to register on time

- [00:02:18.899]Reserve August 19th, 20th, and 21st for orientation
- [00:02:24.300]and August 24th will be your first day of classes.
- [00:02:28.308]That pretty much does it for important dates
- [00:02:30.990]so let's get into a question that we always get,
- [00:02:33.779]what should I do to prepare this summer?
- [00:02:36.950]The short answer is take a deep breath, relax,
- [00:02:40.640]and have some fun.
- [00:02:42.270]You have plenty of time in law school to do law stuff
- [00:02:46.130]but that doesn't mean that we won't have things
- [00:02:48.140]for you to learn about and tasks for you to do
- [00:02:50.820]over the summer but first think about taking a vacation,
- [00:02:54.830]spend some time with family, and read books for pleasure.
- [00:02:58.720]Do not feel pressure
- [00:02:59.850]to do anything legal or law school related.
- [00:03:03.020]You'll have plenty of time for that during law school.
- [00:03:06.260]If you want to read about what to expect
- [00:03:08.840]we'll make some recommendations for you over the summer.
- [00:03:12.566]Join the class of 2023 closed Facebook group.
- [00:03:16.590]All you need to do is search Nebraska Law Class of 2023
- [00:03:21.290]on Facebook and submit a request to join.
- [00:03:25.040]If your Facebook alias
- [00:03:26.510]is different than the name we know you by
- [00:03:29.080]please let us know so we know who you are
- [00:03:31.062]and we'll accept your request.
- [00:03:33.078]The Facebook group is a place
- [00:03:35.300]where you can get to know your classmates,
- [00:03:37.830]bounce questions off of locals about where to live,
- [00:03:41.230]find roommates, and start making friends.
- [00:03:44.089]Soon we will launch the admitted student portal
- [00:03:47.100]on our website.
- [00:03:48.450]This will be where you will find any and all information
- [00:03:51.302]you will need over the summer.
- [00:03:53.302]The portal will be updated every week throughout the summer.
- [00:03:57.270]It will have monthly checklists,
- [00:03:59.285]links to documents you need to complete, and other things.
- [00:04:03.860]In short, the portal will be one-stop shop for you
- [00:04:07.140]over the summer.
- [00:04:08.551]We will continue to communicate with you via email
- [00:04:12.246]over the summer and we will be sending you things
- [00:04:15.610]through the US mail as well.
- [00:04:17.840]So make sure to keep us updated if and when
- [00:04:20.610]your email or mailing address change.
- [00:04:23.686]Another thing that is probably on your mind
- [00:04:26.330]is financing law school
- [00:04:27.790]and how the scholarship and loan process works.
- [00:04:30.760]So let's go there next.
- [00:04:32.569]We ask that all admitted students complete a FAFSA
- [00:04:36.150]even if you do not plan on taking out student loans.
- [00:04:40.038]Your admitted student packet contained information
- [00:04:43.510]about completing the FAFSA and applying for loans.
- [00:04:46.980]A few quick reminders.
- [00:04:48.662]The University of Nebraska Lincoln FAFSA code is 002565.
- [00:04:56.490]We recommend completing your FAFSA by July one
- [00:04:59.730]to ensure that your loan funds are available
- [00:05:02.150]at the beginning of the semester.
- [00:05:04.161]You are considered independent for law school loans.
- [00:05:07.520]No parental information is needed or will be considered.
- [00:05:11.617]Keep copies of all confirming documents
- [00:05:14.760]in case you are asked for documentation.
- [00:05:17.748]You will receive an email
- [00:05:19.300]from the university financial aid office
- [00:05:21.800]notifying you when your loans have been packaged.
- [00:05:25.050]You will find out what you have been awarded in loans
- [00:05:27.680]and accept your loans on MyRED.
- [00:05:30.550]Remember, you do not have to accept
- [00:05:32.658]the full amount of loans offered or any amount at all.
- [00:05:37.540]Keep in mind that law school loan options
- [00:05:39.990]are all unsubsidized loans,
- [00:05:42.500]which means interest will start accruing immediately.
- [00:05:45.857]If you do accept loans you must complete entrance counseling
- [00:05:49.840]and a master promissory note,
- [00:05:52.070]both of which will be found on MyRED
- [00:05:54.650]under the Financial Aid tab.
- [00:05:56.865]Now that we've talked about applying for money,
- [00:06:00.040]your next question is likely how will you get your money?
- [00:06:03.870]Your loan money and scholarship funds,
- [00:06:06.200]if you were awarded a scholarship,
- [00:06:08.000]will be credited to your student account.
- [00:06:10.420]These credits usually appear in your student account
- [00:06:13.490]the week of orientation or the first week of classes.
- [00:06:17.122]Shortly after the start of classes,
- [00:06:19.630]your loan and scholarship funds will be used to pay
- [00:06:24.250]off the debits on your student account,
- [00:06:27.000]things like tuition, fees, bookstore charges,
- [00:06:29.850]parking pass charges, et cetera.
- [00:06:32.410]After the credits pay the debits
- [00:06:34.560]the remaining money will be refunded to you
- [00:06:36.840]for use for things like living expenses.
- [00:06:40.570]A couple of hints for you when you get your refund.
- [00:06:43.620]Make sure that all of the charges you have made
- [00:06:46.020]to your student account are paid off
- [00:06:47.840]before you go spending your loan money.
- [00:06:50.650]Sometimes charges made at the bookstore
- [00:06:52.752]or with parking services
- [00:06:54.630]do not show up on your student account
- [00:06:56.480]until after refunds have been issued.
- [00:06:59.310]You will get your funds faster
- [00:07:01.090]if you sign up for direct deposit.
- [00:07:03.400]This can be done through MyRED
- [00:07:05.550]under the Student Account tab.
- [00:07:07.960]One final comment about money.
- [00:07:10.310]Remember, there will be expenses that come up
- [00:07:13.230]before you have access to your loan refund.
- [00:07:16.090]If you rent an apartment
- [00:07:17.600]you will likely have to put down a deposit.
- [00:07:20.110]If you buy your books somewhere other than the bookstore
- [00:07:22.860]and thus cannot charge them to your student account
- [00:07:25.200]you will need money or a credit card
- [00:07:27.696]to pay for those books.
- [00:07:29.890]These are just a couple of expenses
- [00:07:31.680]that will come up before you get your loan money
- [00:07:34.010]so please plan accordingly.
- [00:07:37.140]I hope you feel a bit more prepared
- [00:07:39.100]and ready for the months to come.
- [00:07:41.100]As always, do not hesitate to reach out
- [00:07:43.550]or call with questions.
- [00:07:45.200]We can't wait to have you here in the fall.
