- [00:00:07.070]Hi, I'm Tracy Warren, Assistant Dean for Admissions
- [00:00:10.670]here at Nebraska Law.
- [00:00:12.650]Most people who go to law school expect
- [00:00:15.070]to be able to one, pass the bar, and two, get a job.
- [00:00:19.610]Well, at Nebraska Law,
- [00:00:20.800]we do an excellent job preparing our students for both.
- [00:00:24.550]I want to take the next few minutes
- [00:00:26.260]to talk with you about how we do that.
- [00:00:29.360]Nebraska Law graduates pass the bar exam
- [00:00:31.870]at incredible rates.
- [00:00:33.410]In 2018, our first-time bar passage rate was just under 88%
- [00:00:38.550]and in 2019, that figure jumped to 91%.
- [00:00:43.240]Many may think that these strong numbers are the exception
- [00:00:46.750]but here at Nebraska, they are the rule.
- [00:00:49.730]Our curriculum is wide and challenging.
- [00:00:52.610]This means that students take classes on subjects
- [00:00:55.730]that are tested on the bar exam and students are ready
- [00:00:59.320]with the help of a bar review course for the exam
- [00:01:02.780]without a school-sponsored bar prep program.
- [00:01:07.000]Whether they start law school with it
- [00:01:08.990]or learn it while here, Nebraska Law students
- [00:01:11.840]have a tremendous work ethic
- [00:01:13.640]and know when it is time to dig in and focus.
- [00:01:16.920]Year after year, we see this determination pay off
- [00:01:20.020]in passing bar exam scores.
- [00:01:22.700]And one more thing about Nebraska and the bar exam.
- [00:01:25.900]Because Nebraska is a uniform bar exam state,
- [00:01:29.440]your exam results here can be used
- [00:01:31.480]to obtain your law license in 36 other states
- [00:01:34.950]that also participate in the uniform bar exam.
- [00:01:39.640]When it comes to securing post-graduate employment,
- [00:01:42.600]our career development office or CDO is here to help you
- [00:01:46.270]in every aspect of your job search.
- [00:01:49.330]The CDO is dedicated to providing you with the information
- [00:01:52.730]and tools necessary to develop
- [00:01:54.750]and execute your chosen career plans.
- [00:01:58.090]Not sure what you want to do with your law degree?
- [00:02:00.630]You can attend education programs that the CDO sponsors.
- [00:02:04.880]These programs will educate you
- [00:02:06.710]on different areas of practice,
- [00:02:08.890]alternative ways to use your JD,
- [00:02:11.460]and even different types of legal employers.
- [00:02:14.610]They also have a spring break shadow program,
- [00:02:17.070]which allows our students to spend half a day
- [00:02:19.890]or a full day with professionals, attorneys, and judges,
- [00:02:23.580]not just in Nebraska, but all over the country.
- [00:02:27.270]Maybe you're a first generation law student
- [00:02:29.660]and don't know any attorneys
- [00:02:31.320]or you just aren't comfortable meeting new people.
- [00:02:34.320]The CDO organizes socials with law firms and legal employers
- [00:02:38.750]so you can get to know legal professionals
- [00:02:41.430]in a comfortable setting.
- [00:02:43.910]What if you want assistance on a more personal level?
- [00:02:46.950]The CDO has two full time professionals ready
- [00:02:50.020]to meet with you and help you prepare for your future.
- [00:02:53.580]In fact, they make a point to meet
- [00:02:55.330]with every first year student
- [00:02:57.160]to make sure their resume is application ready
- [00:03:00.240]and they meet with every third year student
- [00:03:02.540]to make sure they have a post-graduation plan in place.
- [00:03:06.720]Beyond that, they can and will meet with you
- [00:03:09.850]on anything career related.
- [00:03:11.780]Do you have questions about planning your job search?
- [00:03:14.130]Whether you want to go over your documents
- [00:03:16.700]or make sure you put your best foot forward
- [00:03:18.810]during an interview, these counselors will meet
- [00:03:21.240]with you about how to plan and execute your job search.
- [00:03:25.350]Your job search might be through on campus interviews,
- [00:03:28.060]connections with alumni,
- [00:03:29.340]or use of local and national job boards.
- [00:03:32.270]They are here to help with all of it.
- [00:03:34.740]So, you may be thinking, this is all well and good, Tracy,
- [00:03:38.230]but how successful are your students
- [00:03:40.230]at getting post-graduate jobs?
- [00:03:42.280]They're sixth in the nation good.
- [00:03:44.450]Yes, that's right.
- [00:03:45.830]94% of the Class of 2018 was employed
- [00:03:49.620]in bar passage required or JD preferred jobs
- [00:03:53.300]by 10 months after graduation.
- [00:03:55.900]That percentage was sixth highest in the nation
- [00:03:59.320]for job placement rates among the Class of 2018 nationally.
- [00:04:04.100]Before I go, I want to share something
- [00:04:06.160]that is unique about Nebraska and Nebraska Law.
- [00:04:09.200]It is my understanding that
- [00:04:10.490]at most law schools in most states,
- [00:04:12.870]first year students find themselves volunteering
- [00:04:15.970]or doing unpaid internships
- [00:04:18.270]with nonprofit organizations or government agencies.
- [00:04:22.030]This is not the case at Nebraska Law, where we find
- [00:04:24.820]our first year students working, making money
- [00:04:28.290]in the industry during their first summer.
- [00:04:31.250]For example, during the summer
- [00:04:33.180]between their first and second years of law school,
- [00:04:35.860]86% of the Class of 2020
- [00:04:38.890]found themselves working in legal positions.
- [00:04:41.740]Nearly 80% of the class was in paid positions
- [00:04:45.270]or receiving funding from our public interest law fund.
- [00:04:49.060]I will leave you with this.
- [00:04:50.840]Nebraska Law is here to support you in building your resume
- [00:04:54.330]and securing employment while in and after law school.
- [00:04:58.410]I encourage you to ask questions and find out more
- [00:05:01.230]about everything the CDO has to offer
- [00:05:04.030]by exploring our website or submitting questions
- [00:05:06.980]to us or the CDO via email
- [00:05:09.950]and the links on the admitted student portal.
- [00:05:13.210]Thanks and we look forward to having you at Nebraska Law.
