Not every lawyer does the same kind of work. There are almost endless combinations of legal practice areas and specializations that one could put together. Nebraska Law allows you to actually do it.
Melissa McCoy, Director of Enrollment Strategy and Communications, discusses the courses students will take and the options they have to customize their coursework.

- [00:00:14.800]I want to take a few minutes to talk with you
- [00:00:16.860]about academics here at Nebraska Law
- [00:00:19.080]and the flexibility you will have to customize
- [00:00:21.700]your education in a way that makes sense,
- [00:00:23.980]so that you can focus on the kinds of legal problems
- [00:00:27.120]that interest you the most.
- [00:00:29.430]First, let's talk about your first year curriculum.
- [00:00:32.530]You will take 33 credits during that first year,
- [00:00:35.550]which are designed to give you foundational legal knowledge
- [00:00:39.000]as well as writing and research skills.
- [00:00:41.770]Everyone takes the same classes during the 1L year,
- [00:00:45.020]including an international perspectives course,
- [00:00:47.800]which gives Nebraska Law 1L students a unique opportunity
- [00:00:51.570]to get baseline international law knowledge
- [00:00:54.210]during the first year.
- [00:00:56.480]After your first year, you will find that you'll have
- [00:00:59.000]a great deal of flexibility to pick and choose coursework
- [00:01:02.650]that really focuses in on your specific interests.
- [00:01:06.220]You will be required to take a constitutional law course,
- [00:01:09.860]a course called legal professions,
- [00:01:12.090]and you will also choose one seminar course,
- [00:01:14.780]as well as at least six credits of experiential
- [00:01:17.820]or practical skills coursework.
- [00:01:20.280]All the rest of your coursework,
- [00:01:22.010]over half the credit hours you will need to graduate,
- [00:01:24.540]is completely elective.
- [00:01:26.920]All that choice gives you opportunities

- [00:01:31.430]You may decide to pursue a broad range of coursework,

- [00:02:03.630]in an area such as criminal law, tax law,
- [00:02:07.080]environmental law, or immigration law.
- [00:02:10.460]The possibilities for combining coursework
- [00:02:12.670]in creative ways are endless.

- [00:02:19.440]We have nine joint degree programs set up
- [00:02:22.380]that allow you to count law courses
- [00:02:24.410]towards your master's and vice versa.
- [00:02:27.330]Currently, you can pursue joint degrees
- [00:02:29.530]combining law with business administration,
- [00:02:32.770]community and regional planning, gerontology,
- [00:02:36.570]history, journalism and mass communication,
- [00:02:40.680]political science, public accountancy, and public health.
- [00:02:45.507]In addition, you can pursue either a master's or a doctorate
- [00:02:49.430]in psychology along with law as a joint degree.
- [00:02:53.250]These options allow you to pursue advanced education
- [00:02:56.720]in topics that may speak to your passions
- [00:02:59.110]and expand your career options.
