- [00:00:01.590]Today we're taking additional steps
- [00:00:03.680]as we lead through the tremendous change
- [00:00:05.860]brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.
- [00:00:09.300]We're asking supervisors to ensure
- [00:00:11.530]that all of our employees able to work from home
- [00:00:15.210]plan to do so starting on this coming Monday, March 23.
- [00:00:19.810]This includes, importantly, our student workers.
- [00:00:23.720]We're especially grateful to those employees
- [00:00:26.210]who will continue to serve essential positions
- [00:00:28.850]in person on our campuses.
- [00:00:31.930]Our objective first and foremost is the safety
- [00:00:35.530]of our UNL community, safety of our loved ones
- [00:00:39.190]and safety of the broader community that we call home.
- [00:00:43.940]We know that social distancing provides the best opportunity
- [00:00:47.380]to flatten the curve on the spread of COVID-19
- [00:00:51.600]and to lessen the impact of this disease,
- [00:00:54.560]both in numbers and the impact on our health care system.
- [00:00:59.330]Our residence halls will remain open
- [00:01:01.360]for those students unable to return
- [00:01:03.380]to their place of residence,
- [00:01:05.250]and we will continue to support those students
- [00:01:07.980]while practicing social distancing
- [00:01:10.110]and all proper and recommended hygiene protocols.
- [00:01:14.250]Because of the necessary actions taken over this last week,
- [00:01:18.040]many students have already checked out
- [00:01:20.370]of our residence halls.
- [00:01:22.440]This gives us a greater number of open rooms
- [00:01:25.440]and the ability to spread out as necessary
- [00:01:28.210]those who need to remain.
- [00:01:30.890]As we transition to an environment of remote learning,
- [00:01:34.340]and for many of us, remote research,
- [00:01:36.870]creative activity and work,
- [00:01:39.820]our focus remains on the education of our students
- [00:01:43.190]and the continuity of our research mission.
- [00:01:46.620]We still have work to do, curricula to deliver
- [00:01:49.970]and research to perform.
- [00:01:52.010]We need to adjust to doing so remotely now
- [00:01:55.150]in every way possible.
- [00:01:57.610]For our students, I know this is a time
- [00:02:00.330]of tremendous uncertainty for you.
- [00:02:03.040]You're waiting to understand how your classes
- [00:02:05.230]will be delivered on March the 30th
- [00:02:07.450]and for the remainder of the semester.
- [00:02:10.210]I can assure you that your professors
- [00:02:12.220]are working diligently around the clock
- [00:02:14.820]to make that happen successfully.
- [00:02:17.450]We're determined to ensure this pandemic
- [00:02:19.840]does not impact your ability
- [00:02:21.610]to successfully complete your academic journey at Nebraska.
- [00:02:26.320]We want and expect you, every student,
- [00:02:29.780]to successfully achieve your Husker degree.
- [00:02:33.310]For our graduating class, we are committed
- [00:02:36.050]to finding innovative ways
- [00:02:37.580]to celebrate this milestone with you
- [00:02:40.160]if we are unable to have our normal commencement ceremony.
- [00:02:44.610]I know our academic leadership, our faculty and our staff
- [00:02:48.230]have already been working for several weeks
- [00:02:50.410]to provide classes remotely,
- [00:02:52.450]beginning again on Monday, March the 30th.
- [00:02:56.010]I've seen the work, and I've heard the stories
- [00:02:58.570]of the flexibility, the creativity and the ingenuity
- [00:03:01.800]being deployed by our faculty and our staff.
- [00:03:04.890]I thank you for your determination
- [00:03:07.550]and all that you're doing under these extreme circumstances.
- [00:03:11.460]We have brilliant minds
- [00:03:12.880]and some of the best faculty in the world at UNL,
- [00:03:15.850]and I know that we will succeed.
- [00:03:19.330]This is a challenging time for all of us,
- [00:03:22.410]and in a myriad of ways.
- [00:03:24.600]I know many in our community already face concerns
- [00:03:27.620]about the health of loved ones
- [00:03:29.560]or now are having to educate, or I should say
- [00:03:32.270]having the opportunity to educate your elementary
- [00:03:35.790]and secondary school children at home.
- [00:03:38.710]The challenges we face from this global pandemic
- [00:03:41.970]are in many ways unprecedented.
- [00:03:45.340]But what I know and what I've seen countless times
- [00:03:48.670]at this university is that we come together.
- [00:03:52.110]We lend a hand, we figure it out, we get it done.
- [00:03:56.530]We are Nebraska, we will come through this,
- [00:03:59.490]I'm absolutely confident, stronger
- [00:04:02.150]and better as an institution
- [00:04:04.530]and as people individually and collectively.
- [00:04:08.270]Take care of yourselves.
- [00:04:09.710]Take care of your family.
- [00:04:11.800]And I look forward to a successful conclusion
- [00:04:15.070]to our academic semester.
- [00:04:16.870]Thank you for everything that you're doing.
