Description
Activities with your child can be as simple as finding materials that you have in your house and saying, “What should we do with these materials?” Using magazines, glue, scissors, and paper allows a child to use their creative expressions. This can give you as a parent and opportunity to ask open-ended questions. “Tell me more about this image.” This encourages creative expression about their work.

- [00:00:00.457](uplifting music)
- [00:00:04.435]Hey, everybody. Hey.
- [00:00:05.820]It's Jenny and this is...
- [00:00:07.890]Ruby.
- [00:00:08.723]It's Ruby and we wanted to share a fun activity
- [00:00:12.885]for this beautiful day.
- [00:00:14.830]We've already been outside today.
- [00:00:16.760]We've walked around.
- [00:00:18.650]We just finished lunch and so, now we're going to,
- [00:00:22.946]we just found some materials in our home.
- [00:00:25.429]Mmhmm.
- [00:00:26.950]And Ruby thought it would be a good idea
- [00:00:29.990]to cut out some of the pictures of this magazine
- [00:00:33.360]that we have and create a little storybook from it.
- [00:00:39.055](rock music)
- [00:00:44.124]So, Ruby, why don't you show them
- [00:00:44.957]the materials that we have.
- [00:00:46.720]So, you need a magazine.
- [00:00:52.810]You need scissors.
- [00:00:56.480]And glue.
- [00:00:58.270]And get your parent's help with the scissors
- [00:01:02.143]when you're gonna cut things out of the magazine.
- [00:01:05.140]And parents, sometimes it's easier for children
- [00:01:08.380]to cut it out what they want, if you rip the page
- [00:01:11.971]out of the magazine.
- [00:01:14.470]It's more difficult to coordinate their fine motor,
- [00:01:18.860]or their fingers, when the picture's still in the magazine.
- [00:01:23.770]So, you could just have the child flip through,
- [00:01:27.090]find a picture that they like.
- [00:01:28.330]Ruby, wanna find a picture that you like?
- [00:01:33.390]Oh, look at that one.
- [00:01:36.090]It's also a great idea to do some commenting
- [00:01:39.172]if you have a younger child that's just working
- [00:01:42.470]on their language skills.
- [00:01:43.740]So, you could say, "Wow, look at that orange pumpkin
- [00:01:45.838]"you just found in there."
- [00:01:48.450]That one's really neat.
- [00:01:51.810]Okay, let's try this one, Ruby.
- [00:01:54.170]So, what you could do is just take that picture,
- [00:01:57.450]or that page, and just rip it outta there
- [00:02:00.694]and then let the child hold that picture
- [00:02:03.980]to be able to cut out.
- [00:02:05.434]That would be much easier.
- [00:02:08.750]Okay, so, Ruby has her pictures.
- [00:02:11.370]She's already cut them all out
- [00:02:13.870]and she's gonna start gluing them
- [00:02:16.557]onto a big piece of paper that we found.
- [00:02:22.120]And then, Ruby, what was your idea?
- [00:02:23.960]To do what with the pictures after they get on the paper?
- [00:02:28.700]Write a little story.
- [00:02:31.150]So, she thought she would add a little story
- [00:02:34.230]and so, the child could either tell you the story
- [00:02:36.540]and you could write it or, if the child wants
- [00:02:40.721]to do some words, they can write their words also,
- [00:02:44.717]doing some inventive spelling.
- [00:02:47.430]You could say, "What letter do you sound?"
- [00:02:49.030]if you have an older child or "What letter do you hear?"
- [00:02:52.429]if you have an older child.
- [00:02:54.541]If you have a younger child, then they could just
- [00:02:56.760]illustrate right along with it.
- [00:02:58.375]So, this is our idea for the day,
- [00:03:00.900]this is how we're spending our time after lunch.
- [00:03:04.680]So, Ruby, we hope they have a beautiful day.
- [00:03:07.130]Yep.
- [00:03:07.963]So, I'm working on right now putting glue on my pictures
- [00:03:13.460]and gluing it on this big piece of paper.
- [00:03:19.380]So, you just turn the picture around
- [00:03:21.730]and you put the glue on it.
- [00:03:30.120]And you can put it where you want.
- [00:03:35.906]Then you can just keep on doing it
- [00:03:37.900]until all of the pictures are gone.
- [00:03:45.679](upbeat music)
