- [00:00:03.680]My name's Brent Cejda.
- [00:00:04.760]I'm a professor in the Department
- [00:00:06.080]of Educational Administration.
- [00:00:07.900]Primary area I work in is educational leadership
- [00:00:10.870]in higher education.
- [00:00:12.520]I also chair dissertations and work a little bit
- [00:00:15.530]with our Student Affairs program at the master's level.
- [00:00:18.850]This is my 15th year here.
- [00:00:20.890]Seven years before UNL, I was at Texas Tech University.
- [00:00:25.370]I was a faculty member in the higher education program there
- [00:00:28.780]and was also the coordinator of that program.
- [00:00:31.830]Prior to Texas Tech, I spent 11 years as an administrator
- [00:00:35.960]in both two and four-year institutions
- [00:00:38.940]in Kansas, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.
- [00:00:42.570]And before that, I spent five years as a faculty member
- [00:00:45.700]in community colleges in Kansas.
- [00:00:47.520]My prior area of research is in community colleges.
- [00:00:51.330]Most recently, I looked at a group of students
- [00:00:55.470]who had started at a community college
- [00:00:58.020]and followed their path through graduation
- [00:01:01.110]to see if it wasn't a bit more complex
- [00:01:03.450]than just saying they started at the community college.
- [00:01:06.650]And indeed, we found that there were five different paths
- [00:01:09.730]that the students followed
- [00:01:11.760]all the way through to graduation,
- [00:01:13.400]so it proved to be a little bit more complex
- [00:01:15.930]than just where they started.
- [00:01:17.710]Engagement-wise, I've worked
- [00:01:19.490]with the National Council of Instructional Administrators,
- [00:01:22.580]which is hosted by our department.
- [00:01:25.150]I was the executive director for nine years
- [00:01:28.040]of that organization, and I've also worked
- [00:01:30.330]with the American Association of Community Colleges
- [00:01:32.870]on a number of projects.
- [00:01:34.650]I think there's two things that make a successful student.
- [00:01:38.520]The first is that I think you need to realize
- [00:01:41.400]that this is a very serious time commitment.
- [00:01:44.320]I often say to students,
- [00:01:45.977]"If this isn't the number one thing in your life
- [00:01:49.307]"or the number one or two things in your life,
- [00:01:52.187]"it's probably going to be more difficult
- [00:01:54.407]"for you to finish."
- [00:01:56.370]I think the second thing is being open
- [00:01:59.510]to learning new things,
- [00:02:00.830]to being open to considering new thoughts,
- [00:02:03.690]new theories, new philosophies,
- [00:02:05.670]rather than being close-minded.
- [00:02:08.450]I find our department to be quite collaborative.
- [00:02:11.040]Even people in P-12
- [00:02:14.665]and higher ed interact and collaborate together.
- [00:02:17.880]I think the best thing about our department
- [00:02:20.380]in terms of our programs is the fact
- [00:02:22.930]that by being online and hybrid,
- [00:02:25.800]we are able to reach coast-to-coast
- [00:02:28.130]and also border-to-border,
- [00:02:29.970]so our students are in classes with individuals
- [00:02:32.840]from all over the country.
- [00:02:34.590]That provides a wider variety of perspective
- [00:02:37.670]and experiences to be shared
- [00:02:39.820]than if we were simply a program
- [00:02:41.970]that served the southeast part of Nebraska
- [00:02:44.530]and maybe a little bit of Kansas.
