- [00:00:00.350]Well, supporting agriculture
- [00:00:01.520]and also strengthening rural communities
- [00:00:03.320]often go hand in hand.
- [00:00:04.890]Nebraska, like many other states, has a network
- [00:00:07.210]of extension educators dedicated to the success
- [00:00:09.720]of families, farms, and the economy.
- [00:00:12.650]Nebraska Extension Dean and Director Chuck Hibberd joins us
- [00:00:15.740]now with the latest, and Chuck, as always,
- [00:00:17.670]thank you very much for taking the time
- [00:00:18.980]to chat with us today.
- [00:00:20.170]If you would, tell us a little bit about the role
- [00:00:22.130]of Extension in Nebraska.
- [00:00:25.640]Absolutely Janet, you know, we are really proud
- [00:00:27.860]of the fact that we have a county-based,
- [00:00:30.500]locally-distributed extension program in Nebraska.
- [00:00:33.900]We think that's really important because so many
- [00:00:36.010]of the issues that people deal
- [00:00:37.440]with across this state are truly local issues,
- [00:00:40.220]and so having that local system
- [00:00:42.070]really gives us an opportunity to, first of all,
- [00:00:44.290]build relationships, trust-based relationships,
- [00:00:47.260]but then also think about,
- [00:00:48.440]how do we respond to those critical local issues
- [00:00:51.060]in a way that people value and they can build and grow on.
- [00:00:55.440]So that's a key part of our mission here in Nebraska.
- [00:00:58.150]Now, it was just a year ago
- [00:00:59.660]that Nebraska experienced those devastating floods,
- [00:01:02.400]how did Extension help respond to that situation?
- [00:01:06.550]You know, Janet, we were there on day one,
- [00:01:08.900]March 13th 2019, our folks were out connecting with farmers
- [00:01:13.800]and livestock producers, and by the way,
- [00:01:16.470]half of Nebraska was flooded,
- [00:01:17.890]the other half suffered an extreme blizzard,
- [00:01:21.410]and so we were there right on day one,
- [00:01:23.950]we were working in the emergency operation centers,
- [00:01:26.870]responding to calls.
- [00:01:28.660]We were working with the volunteer registration centers,
- [00:01:32.000]you know, cause in a disaster, a big part of response is,
- [00:01:35.410]how do we organize volunteers
- [00:01:36.886]and help them do really good things?
- [00:01:39.220]And then, just really continuing that effort,
- [00:01:42.000]as the flood developed and then began to recede,
- [00:01:45.860]helping people understand what it takes
- [00:01:48.207]to protect their home and if their home did get wet,
- [00:01:51.030]we had a moisture meters that we provided for people,
- [00:01:54.660]so they could test the wood in their home
- [00:01:57.270]and not rebuild until things had dried out,
- [00:01:59.930]so just a lot of that really local response,
- [00:02:03.440]and by the way, its for the long-haul, its,
- [00:02:05.960]we expect another eight or nine years
- [00:02:07.930]before this 2019 flood is fully, fully addressed.
- [00:02:12.366]Looking to the future,
- [00:02:13.571]how will the university extension continue
- [00:02:15.340]to make an impact on the husker state?
- [00:02:18.730]You know, we have a number of programs
- [00:02:20.340]that are really, really important.
- [00:02:21.864]This really started with the farm economy and the flood,
- [00:02:24.900]but mental health and wellbeing is a huge issue
- [00:02:27.600]in this state as it is in so many,
- [00:02:29.980]so we're really ramping up our work in that area.
- [00:02:33.000]We have a new program,
- [00:02:35.158]a new initiative that's really focused on rural communities,
- [00:02:38.760]rural community prosperity,
- [00:02:40.640]and helping local leaders think
- [00:02:42.560]about how do they grow their community,
- [00:02:44.340]how do they attract people to their community?
- [00:02:47.170]So people attraction, place-making, creating communities
- [00:02:51.540]where people want to live and work, and its interesting,
- [00:02:55.210]in some of our rural communities in Nebraska,
- [00:02:57.240]two-thirds of the newcomers don't have a connection
- [00:02:59.940]with that community, so this work that we're doing
- [00:03:02.210]with community leaders is really important
- [00:03:04.420]to the future of our state.
- [00:03:06.030]Well Chuck, thank you very much for taking the time
- [00:03:07.700]to share the story with us today.
- [00:03:09.510]Nebraska Extension Dean and also Director,
- [00:03:11.730]Chuck Hibberd, joining us today from Nebraska.
