- [00:00:03.580]Hi, my name is Kathy Wesley.
- [00:00:05.560]I'm an assistant professor of practice
- [00:00:07.340]here at the University,
- [00:00:08.780]and the Educational Administration Department,
- [00:00:11.240]and I teach in the masters program
- [00:00:16.030]and the doctoral programs.
- [00:00:17.760]I'm the coordinator of the masters program.
- [00:00:20.188]I'm also the executive director
- [00:00:21.870]of the National Council of Instructional Administrators,
- [00:00:25.730]which is housed here in our department.
- [00:00:27.880]NCIA is an affiliate
- [00:00:32.600]of the American Association of the Community Colleges.
- [00:00:36.010]So that's what my focus is here at the university.
- [00:00:39.050]I went into my graduate studies
- [00:00:43.750]with the goal of becoming a community college president,
- [00:00:46.480]because that's where I started, and I wanted to give back.
- [00:00:48.930]And as the executive director,
- [00:00:50.950]I have a national reach to other, to members.
- [00:00:55.840]So right now we have about 55 institutions
- [00:01:00.630]that are our community colleges that are members of NCIA,
- [00:01:03.730]and I work with their executive leaders,
- [00:01:06.150]and we support the work of instructional administrators
- [00:01:11.330]at community colleges.
- [00:01:12.690]So that's my way of giving back.
- [00:01:15.000]So I kind of get the best of both worlds.
- [00:01:17.860]I came from business, actually,
- [00:01:19.440]I came from a lawyer's office.
- [00:01:22.070]I worked for 22 years as a paralegal,
- [00:01:24.280]and ultimately, I had thought about pursuing law school
- [00:01:28.020]when we arrived in Lincoln,
- [00:01:29.200]but chose this path instead.
- [00:01:32.710]So my dissertation is focused on women
- [00:01:37.130]in non-traditional occupations.
- [00:01:38.750]And I wanted to get at what motivates them, right?
- [00:01:41.880]So when we think of women in non-traditional occupations,
- [00:01:45.400]which also ties in to community college work
- [00:01:47.970]in terms of an associate's degree or certificates
- [00:01:52.480]to work in environments
- [00:01:55.620]that don't require a four-year degree.
- [00:02:00.330]That's a certain type of woman who can work among men
- [00:02:06.820]in a production line.
- [00:02:08.730]So I studied at Lincoln Industries here in town,
- [00:02:13.380]which is a Lean Six Sigma organization,
- [00:02:15.840]very, very popular, very successful company in town,
- [00:02:21.290]and I looked at those women who worked
- [00:02:23.840]from eight to five every day dipping metal
- [00:02:26.430]in a production line setting.
- [00:02:29.590]And I was amazed at what it was that made those women
- [00:02:36.200]able to sustain themselves in that type of work.
- [00:02:40.210]So that's where my research started,
- [00:02:43.200]and from that point, it went into motivation,
- [00:02:46.010]and now I have moved into becoming a Gallup Strengths coach.
- [00:02:53.290]So I'm a certified Gallup Strengths coach,
- [00:02:55.090]and we integrate, we're working to integrate
- [00:02:57.700]that work with developing masters students
- [00:03:02.960]around their innate abilities.
- [00:03:05.740]And what makes students successful
- [00:03:08.090]in an online environment is discipline.
- [00:03:11.790]And you have to treat your work like a job.
- [00:03:16.010]And I know that's hard to do
- [00:03:17.450]because most of our students already have jobs.
- [00:03:20.530]They have jobs, they have families, it's a very busy time,
- [00:03:23.770]but this graduate-level education.
- [00:03:25.500]It requires a step-up in your game.
- [00:03:28.900]So when I talk with my advisees,
- [00:03:31.540]I talk with them about the importance
- [00:03:33.100]of not cutting corners,
- [00:03:36.530]following all of the instruction.
- [00:03:38.250]If you have an assignment that says,
- [00:03:40.120]asks you three questions, don't answer just two.
- [00:03:43.660]That really is the sign of someone
- [00:03:46.550]who cares about their work, who takes it seriously,
- [00:03:49.350]and it comes through in your assignments.
- [00:03:51.320]Your professors realize,
- [00:03:53.060]or you're highlighted amongst the group
- [00:03:56.500]when you are thorough and thoughtful and write well.
- [00:04:02.750]You know, pay attention to how you're writing.
- [00:04:04.610]Pay attention to your grammar.
- [00:04:05.830]Pay attention to your APA citation.
- [00:04:08.110]And I know we all wanna die about APA citation,
- [00:04:11.040]but it really is important,
- [00:04:12.830]and the more you concentrate on that,
- [00:04:15.860]the easier it's gonna be.
- [00:04:18.080]You know, this is gonna sound, you know, cliched,
- [00:04:21.750]but it really is the people, and, you know,
- [00:04:24.780]I'm not from Nebraska, I've lived here now nine or 10 years.
- [00:04:29.320]We chose Nebraska, and, you know,
- [00:04:33.230]I know the motto is "There's no place like Nebraska",
- [00:04:36.500]but having come from a military family
- [00:04:38.290]and traveling all over and living every three years
- [00:04:41.290]in a different place and then landing here in Nebraska,
- [00:04:45.190]there really is no place like Nebraska,
- [00:04:47.070]and it's the people.
- [00:04:48.320]It's, the people are great!
- [00:04:51.580]Their sincerity here and their genuineness here
- [00:04:56.020]within the University itself,
- [00:04:57.550]within my colleagues in my department, and the students.
- [00:05:00.510]It's just a really, really great place to be.
