- [00:00:00.570]Well, hunting and fishing in the United States
- [00:00:02.630]is on the decline.
- [00:00:03.840]The University of Nebraska Lincoln
- [00:00:05.200]is now looking at what could be done
- [00:00:07.160]to reverse the associated decrease in funding
- [00:00:09.800]for natural resources conservation.
- [00:00:12.510]Chris Chizinski joins us now,
- [00:00:14.740]he's with the School of Natural Resources
- [00:00:16.770]and joins us from Lincoln, Nebraska.
- [00:00:18.466]And thanks for taking the time to chat with us today, Chris,
- [00:00:21.530]we appreciate your time.
- [00:00:22.800]So why is the decline of hunting and fishing
- [00:00:25.110]something that we, as a country, should be concerned about?
- [00:00:29.620]There's two big reasons.
- [00:00:30.890]One is a lot of funding for wildlife conservation
- [00:00:34.480]comes from spending on hunting and fishing stuff,
- [00:00:37.500]so there's a federal excise tax on hunting and fishing gear
- [00:00:41.080]and shooting sports gear, hunting and licenses,
- [00:00:44.276]stamps, all of those go to fund wildlife conservation.
- [00:00:49.056]And the second big part is that
- [00:00:50.389]it's an important part of American culture.
- [00:00:53.580]This is how people get out and experience the outdoors,
- [00:00:56.026]hang out with fellow hunters and anglers,
- [00:00:59.550]and aget to spend time outdoors.
- [00:01:01.126]And why are these sports declining in interest?
- [00:01:05.340]There's several reasons.
- [00:01:06.173]One is that the older population, the baby boomers,
- [00:01:09.260]are starting to age out of hunting,
- [00:01:11.240]and there's not been as many young people
- [00:01:13.610]getting into hunting and fishing.
- [00:01:16.112]What is the focus of your research,
- [00:01:18.401]and how does it of course address these challenges?
- [00:01:21.476]One is looking at why people stopped hunting and fishing,
- [00:01:25.640]looking at barriers.
- [00:01:27.100]We have several different things that we've looked at.
- [00:01:30.380]There's no really one big smoking gun
- [00:01:32.210]about hunting and fishing
- [00:01:33.690]that keeps people from participating,
- [00:01:35.200]but there's a lot of small things.
- [00:01:36.770]And one of the biggest issues appears to be access.
- [00:01:40.080]People not knowing where to hunt
- [00:01:41.494]or where to go to find access,
- [00:01:43.809]especially in areas where there's a lot of private land.
- [00:01:47.017]So are there any areas
- [00:01:48.900]where hunting participation is growing currently?
- [00:01:51.530]A lot of states are working for R3,
- [00:01:54.880]which is trying to recruit, retain,
- [00:01:56.360]and bring in new hunters and anglers,
- [00:01:59.310]especially young people,
- [00:02:00.970]trying to get more young people involved.
- [00:02:02.944]Sound good, well, thank you very much
- [00:02:04.154]for joining us this morning.
- [00:02:05.587]Professor Chris Chizinski joining us
- [00:02:08.700]with University of Nebraska's School of Natural Resources,
- [00:02:11.580]on location in Lincoln, Nebraska.
