- [00:00:00.258](mellow music)
- [00:00:02.550]Welcome back inside our Husker Sports Network studios.
- [00:00:04.790]Greg Sharpe joined by Chancellor Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:07.170]One of the things that makes our university so special
- [00:00:09.800]Chancellor is when a Husker comes on campus
- [00:00:12.390]the great support resources that our athletes
- [00:00:14.531]are exposed to to reach their potential.
- [00:00:17.840]We've certainly seen evidence of that
- [00:00:19.680]once again this year with the achievements
- [00:00:21.427]of some of our student athletes, haven't we?
- [00:00:23.700]Well Greg absolutely our Nebraska students
- [00:00:26.620]get an opportunity to co create their experience.
- [00:00:29.120]That's one of the things that's very special
- [00:00:30.970]about the University of Nebraska-Lincoln amongst our peers.
- [00:00:33.740]And certainly our student athletes get a chance to do that.
- [00:00:37.840]We've had quite a year this academic year already.
- [00:00:42.160]For in particular two of our student athletes
- [00:00:45.130]were recognized nationally with what you would consider
- [00:00:48.670]kind of the Heisman academic awards
- [00:00:51.010]if you wanna think of it that way in the NCAA.
- [00:00:54.520]Last fall Angela Mercurio,
- [00:00:57.520]one of our track and field athletes a jumper,
- [00:00:59.760]was named the NCAA 2019 Woman of the Year.
- [00:01:03.930]Huge accomplishment in that for Angela.
- [00:01:08.100]She's now off in the road to pursuing
- [00:01:10.900]a medical degree and a medical education.
- [00:01:14.730]So great award for Angela.
- [00:01:16.710]And then just last month in January at the NCAA convention
- [00:01:21.290]one of our former All-American men's gymnasts,
- [00:01:24.930]Anton Stephenson who's now in med school at UNMC
- [00:01:29.380]in Omaha pursuing his MD,
- [00:01:31.790]was recognized as our 18th winner
- [00:01:35.010]of the NCAA Today's Top 10 award recipient.
- [00:01:38.640]That's considered kind of as I said
- [00:01:40.620]the Heisman academically for students across the NCAA,
- [00:01:45.800]and we're the record holder at the University of Nebraska
- [00:01:48.880]in receipt of that award.
- [00:01:50.470]They are both amazing young individuals.
- [00:01:52.340]A bright, bright future ahead of them.
- [00:01:53.880]Not only is this true for students and student athletes,
- [00:01:56.290]but of course the folks that lead.
- [00:01:58.410]The teach, the research,
- [00:01:59.660]the creative work being done on campus.
- [00:02:02.110]Yet another faculty member
- [00:02:03.480]made some news recently for his achievements.
- [00:02:05.850]What's the latest on this Husker professor?
- [00:02:08.090]You know well Greg we've got
- [00:02:10.260]world leading faculty across all of our colleges.
- [00:02:13.050]And just one example recently,
- [00:02:15.420]Mark Walker who is one of our mathematicians
- [00:02:18.410]in the College of Arts and Sciences
- [00:02:19.930]in our Department of Mathematics
- [00:02:21.960]became the 10th Nebraska faculty member
- [00:02:24.350]to be named an American Mathematical Society Fellow.
- [00:02:27.460]It's the highest honor in the discipline
- [00:02:30.120]to be named a fellow of that society.
- [00:02:32.940]He was one of 52 nationally to be named this year
- [00:02:36.680]to that class for the Society.
- [00:02:39.040]And it's really a recognition by your peers
- [00:02:41.820]that you're at the top of your field.
- [00:02:43.970]And to be recognized that way
- [00:02:45.340]I think we all can understand is quite gratifying.
- [00:02:48.370]So for Mark to be named that's a big deal.
- [00:02:51.210]He's an algebra person.
- [00:02:53.150]His field is algebra.
- [00:02:54.700]And he tells the story about how
- [00:02:57.260]he had this actual moment of clarity
- [00:02:59.540]that helped led him to the proof that he made
- [00:03:04.330]that he's famous for when he was watching
- [00:03:07.350]a Thursday night pro football game.
- [00:03:09.330]Right, so just an example of how
- [00:03:11.882]those kind of things happen.
- [00:03:14.170]Congratulations to Mark this big award for him.
- [00:03:17.720]He also has been recognized here locally.
- [00:03:20.650]The university has earned our College of Arts
- [00:03:22.560]and Sciences Distinguished Teaching Award.
- [00:03:24.800]So he's not only a good researcher,
- [00:03:26.430]he's also a top notch teacher.
- [00:03:28.650]So congratulations to Dr. Walker.
- [00:03:30.910]Fantastic, that's great.
- [00:03:31.780]Well it's no surprise when a winning team
- [00:03:33.263]attracts attention and support year in and year out.
- [00:03:35.990]And so it goes with the University of Nebraska team
- [00:03:38.260]behind the scenes at the National Drought
- [00:03:40.240]Mitigation Center here on campus.
- [00:03:42.210]What can you tell us about their plans
- [00:03:43.440]to advance how they help landowners and communities
- [00:03:45.880]manage the challenges of a drought?
- [00:03:48.490]So the NDMC we call it,
- [00:03:50.510]the National Drought Mitigation Center,
- [00:03:52.180]has been here at the University of Nebraska for 26 years.
- [00:03:55.370]It's part of the School of Natural Resources
- [00:03:57.710]and our Institute of Ag and Natural Resources.
- [00:04:00.530]It's considered the international
- [00:04:02.310]leading authority on drought.
- [00:04:05.240]The person that founded it, Don Wilhite,
- [00:04:07.343]was originally known as Dr. Drought.
- [00:04:09.480]We actually affectionately call Don Dr. Drought.
- [00:04:13.150]And recently the NDMC has earned an $833,000 grant
- [00:04:18.680]from the USDA that's part of supporting Climate Hubs
- [00:04:24.200]which will help them
- [00:04:27.602]to really develop new strategies
- [00:04:29.890]for drought mitigation around the country.
- [00:04:32.603]Things like for example,
- [00:04:34.940]Grass-Cast that helps measure drought's impact
- [00:04:37.340]on forage production on grass production.
- [00:04:39.500]Or Forest Drought Response Index to predict in particularly
- [00:04:44.800]increasingly important around wild fires.
- [00:04:47.750]The NDMC is a huge deal.
- [00:04:50.010]A lot of people might remember 2012-13
- [00:04:53.390]when we had our last really major drought in Nebraska,
- [00:04:57.590]and you saw on the national news
- [00:04:59.250]every night the drought prediction map.
- [00:05:01.960]That's produced right here
- [00:05:03.420]at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:05:05.610]by the National Drought Mitigation Center
- [00:05:07.540]that does such important work every day
- [00:05:09.800]in helping protect our nation.
- [00:05:11.670]Fantastic, thank you so much for updating us on that.
- [00:05:14.510]Always great to see you.
- [00:05:15.710]Go Big Red.
- [00:05:16.650]Second half action Huskers and Illini coming up next.
