[00:00:17.040]is a model where we bring together
[00:00:19.210]multiple different teams of researchers
[00:00:21.860]together with a network lead,
[00:00:23.400]and the idea is that many problems in education are so large
[00:00:26.920]that they really require more than one team to address them.
[00:00:30.080]So by forming a network,
[00:00:31.540]we can get multiple different perspectives
[00:00:33.260]and multiple teams working on the same problem together
[00:00:36.236]in a coordinated fashion,
[00:00:38.100]and we hope that by so doing,
[00:00:40.090]we accelerate the research trajectory.
[00:00:43.450]Through the Early Learning Network,
[00:00:44.980]we are really hoping to accelerate what we know
[00:00:48.398]about how to preserve the advantages of early education,
[00:00:51.790]particularly at closing achievement gaps
[00:00:53.620]across elementary school, into third grade,
[00:00:56.250]and potentially even beyond third grade.
[00:00:58.250]For a network, and in this case, for our network,
[00:01:00.600]we have six teams working concurrently,
[00:01:02.580]trying to think about the same problem
[00:01:04.260]in different locations.
[00:01:05.630]And because they're all asking the same question,
[00:01:08.210]the hope is that the diversity and complexity
[00:01:10.910]of the answers that we get
[00:01:12.240]will help us convey a clearer, coherent message,
[00:01:16.710]but also one that reflects the diversity of experience
[00:01:19.270]that we know young children experience across the nation.
[00:01:22.850]Early learning is a tremendously important area
[00:01:25.040]to invest in, because learning is a developmental process,
[00:01:28.640]and everything begins when kids are small.
[00:01:31.300]Language learning happens from the time kids are born,
[00:01:34.260]kids are learning basic concepts of numbers
[00:01:36.400]from the time that they are little,
[00:01:37.520]and we know that children have different experiences
[00:01:40.860]before they enter school,
[00:01:42.400]and early learning is the place where we can, if you will,
[00:01:45.580]level the playing field
[00:01:46.860]so that as many kids as possible
[00:01:48.930]can have the skills and tools that they need
[00:01:51.460]to benefit from education in K-12 and beyond.
