[00:00:08.960]We've certainly been keeping our eye on this
[00:00:10.620]women's game here today,
[00:00:11.830]but we're halfway through February,
[00:00:13.720]and that certainly means spring sports
[00:00:15.170]are popping up, aren't they?
[00:00:16.870]Yeah, it's kind of hard to believe
[00:00:18.105]President's Day was this past week
[00:00:20.330]and we're already right at the center of February,
[00:00:23.290]spring sports are in the air
[00:00:25.770]baseball begins this weekend at Baylor,
[00:00:28.660]excited about that,
[00:00:29.620]first pitch at Hog's field
[00:00:30.890]scheduled for less than three weeks away.

[00:00:34.505]tickets here recently went on sale for that.
[00:00:37.804]As you know, last year was a record
[00:00:40.170]85 thousand people at the game,
[00:00:42.125]nothing quite like it in college sports,
[00:00:44.880]to see a spring practice turn out 85 thousand folks
[00:00:47.620]to take a look.
[00:00:48.850]So, looking forward to that coming up here in April,
[00:00:51.560]so spring's right around the corner.

[00:00:55.780]With the calendar in mind,
[00:00:56.960]it was one year ago yesterday
[00:00:58.694]that the university celebrated 150 years
[00:01:01.380]since the original charter.
[00:01:02.870]And you celebrated a little earlier this year
[00:01:04.880]with an important campus event that happened on Friday,
[00:01:07.570]what can you tell us about that?
[00:01:09.470]Well, birthday was yesterday,
[00:01:11.642]February 15th, 1869
[00:01:14.210]the university of Nebraska was founded in Lincoln
[00:01:16.540]and we celebrated that again
[00:01:18.450]we blew out 151 candles this time.
[00:01:21.427]Headed to our 152nd year ahead.
[00:01:25.438]State of the university address was on Friday,
[00:01:28.134]where we assessed kind of were we are as a university,
[00:01:31.630]moving forward in our plans
[00:01:33.472]and a good chance to also get updated on
[00:01:36.730]all of the different colleges, you know,
[00:01:38.680]each of our academic deans leading the nine colleges
[00:01:41.500]were part of that process.
[00:01:42.930]Talked about some of the things happening in their colleges.
[00:01:45.520]And then we launched, officially, our N 2025.
[00:01:50.160]First five year strategic plan
[00:01:52.230]as part of the 150,
[00:01:54.010]N 150, as we called it, vision.
[00:01:57.230]A year ago we announced that report
[00:02:00.100]on what should the university look like
[00:02:01.590]in the next 25 years.
[00:02:03.380]Well, Friday we announced the first five year plan for that
[00:02:07.220]called N 2025
[00:02:09.210]to take us out to the five years ahead.
[00:02:12.210]Six aims there, around student success
[00:02:15.160]around research and creative activity,
[00:02:17.210]around interdisciplinary work on
[00:02:18.750]grand challenges important to Nebraska,
[00:02:21.290]on professional development of our faculty and staff,
[00:02:25.025]on investing in our people.
[00:02:26.940]So, very excited about that.
[00:02:28.850]Great day with our university on Friday,
[00:02:31.330]blowing out the birthday candles
[00:02:32.690]and getting another year underway.
[00:02:34.550]Congratulations on that, taking those steps.
[00:02:36.560]Now the plan is launched, what's next?
[00:02:39.549]Well, you know, we had our N 150 commission
[00:02:42.800]that worked during 2018,
[00:02:44.390]came up with a big 25 year vision for the university
[00:02:47.600]and last year, about this time last year,
[00:02:50.690]we developed an N 2025 strategy development team.
[00:02:54.360]31 people from across the university campus,
[00:02:57.840]from faculty, from staff, students who made up that group,
[00:03:01.570]administrators of the university,
[00:03:03.600]and it was chaired by four of our most distinguished faculty
[00:03:07.290]four co-chairs that led that effort
[00:03:09.410]put in tremendous effort over the past year,
[00:03:12.130]over five hundred hours, the four of them each
[00:03:15.300]put into that effort.
[00:03:17.510]Rick Bevins, who's the head of our psychology program.
[00:03:20.250]Sue Sheridan, who leads one of our major research centers
[00:03:23.150]in the area of early childhood education.
[00:03:25.680]Angela Pannier, one of our biomedical engineers
[00:03:28.130]in biological systems engineering.
[00:03:30.440]And Shane Farritor,
[00:03:31.970]one of our mechanical materials engineers
[00:03:34.130]started the company virtual incision,
[00:03:35.860]it's on Nebraska innovation campus.
[00:03:38.210]So, huge effort they put out to get us to this N 2025.
[00:03:42.970]You know, and where we're sitting in 2020,
[00:03:45.670]achieving the great things the university is achieving,
[00:03:48.770]and moving into this new N 2025 plan
[00:03:51.650]is just a very exciting time at the University of Nebraska,
[00:03:55.470]and now we gotta go out and play the second half
[00:03:57.640]of this basketball game.
