- [00:05:02.440]this morning they said hey we're red
- [00:05:03.910]it's Valentine's Day no it's actually
- [00:05:06.190]the eve of the 151st anniversary of the

- [00:05:12.940]nebraska-lincoln congratulations to each
- [00:05:14.920]and every one of you that are part of
- [00:05:16.450]this
- [00:05:24.150]and I want you to know even though I'm
- [00:05:26.229]new on the job I've had a chance to get
- [00:05:28.030]around the entire state and I've spent
- [00:05:30.580]some time here on your campus both main
- [00:05:32.979]campus in East Campus and quite honestly
- [00:05:36.160]I've been blown away I'm so impressed by
- [00:05:39.160]what I've seen the professionalism the
- [00:05:41.139]care the dedication to academia to
- [00:05:44.979]research to caring for our students
- [00:05:47.760]there is not a single institution in our
- [00:05:51.970]state of Nebraska that's had a bigger
- [00:05:54.100]impact on our history on our past what
- [00:05:58.510]is happening today and as we're going to
- [00:06:01.060]learn today what will happen in the
- [00:06:03.070]future the entire state and the success
- [00:06:07.479]of our state goes through not just the
- [00:06:09.760]university system but the flagship of
- [00:06:12.460]our institutions the University of
- [00:06:14.889]nebraska-lincoln
- [00:06:24.580]now I'm excited to tell you that we are
- [00:06:26.860]going to be writing a strategy for the
- [00:06:28.509]entire university system it's going to
- [00:06:30.370]be done basically in the next 55 days
- [00:06:32.889]and the success of that strategy and how
- [00:06:35.889]we enact it how we put it into motion
- [00:06:37.560]will be done exactly through the work
- [00:06:40.569]that you have done the committees that
- [00:06:42.699]worked on the 150th anniversary and the
- [00:06:45.190]committee's that will show you today the
- [00:06:48.099]work of n 2025 I am so excited for what
- [00:06:51.250]you're going to see I applaud everyone
- [00:06:53.889]that's had anything to do with that work
- [00:06:55.960]and that is the work that will inform us
- [00:06:58.750]for how we will go forward now really
- [00:07:01.599]the reason I want to come in here today
- [00:07:03.310]was to be the person that would
- [00:07:05.949]introduce your Chancellor you know I've
- [00:07:08.979]gotten to know Ronnie green his wife
- [00:07:10.479]Jane here through my entire time going
- [00:07:13.000]through my interviews from my vetting
- [00:07:15.370]period and I just want you to know how
- [00:07:18.370]excited I am to be working with such an
- [00:07:21.069]amazing man Ronnie as you all know is
- [00:07:24.969]from Roanoke Virginia there's still a
- [00:07:26.500]little bit of that Virginia accident in
- [00:07:28.150]his voice first-generation to attend
- [00:07:31.449]college from a family that was involved
- [00:07:33.819]in farming

- [00:08:43.930]University of Nebraska system we're
- [00:08:45.970]gonna have a lot of fun together in the
- [00:08:47.890]years ahead so welcome to Nebraska wow
- [00:08:56.670]what a year we've had in 2019 and I used
- [00:09:00.760]the words breathtaking all inspiring in
- [00:09:04.510]so many ways to describe that past year
- [00:09:07.140]the video that you just saw captured our
- [00:09:10.750]wonderful in 150 celebration of our
- [00:09:13.180]Nebraska's flagship land-grant
- [00:09:15.810]University and it was a celebration of
- [00:09:19.420]those who walk before us who walked our
- [00:09:22.360]hallowed halls on whose shoulders and
- [00:09:25.120]whose minds we actually stand here today
- [00:09:28.150]and some might even say that it was a
- [00:09:31.360]celebration of 15 decades of true grit
- [00:09:34.510]and true glory and profound impact that
- [00:09:38.800]this institution has had on Nebraska and
- [00:09:41.920]on the world it was also a year where we
- [00:09:45.010]both celebrated but also renewed our
- [00:09:47.460]trifold land-grant mission of access to
- [00:09:50.860]the most exceptional education for the
- [00:09:53.800]21st century
- [00:09:54.880]to research that will change the world
- [00:09:57.640]ahead and to the engagement that we have
- [00:10:01.870]with the full citizenry of the state of
- [00:10:04.660]Nebraska and now here we are today with
- [00:10:08.050]us another scarlet and cream birthday
- [00:10:10.630]cake with 151 candles on that cake but
- [00:10:16.030]even more renewed and doubled down on
- [00:10:18.790]our commitment to our mission we're at
- [00:10:22.480]historical highs for providing access to
- [00:10:24.700]exceptional education our fall
- [00:10:27.910]enrollment of twenty five thousand three
- [00:10:30.220]hundred and ninety sets the sixth
- [00:10:32.500]straight year that our enrollment has
- [00:10:34.660]exceeded twenty five thousand
- [00:10:37.059]and not only is our enrollment strong in
- [00:10:39.939]numbers but we also have the most
- [00:10:42.459]ethnically diverse for entering class in
- [00:10:45.189]our history with the have the highest
- [00:10:47.889]average AC T in UNL history and we
- [00:10:52.569]continue to increase the number of
- [00:10:54.249]students who come to us from outside of
- [00:10:56.379]Nebraska as well as increased numbers of
- [00:10:58.809]Nebraskans in our freshman class now
- [00:11:02.169]having students on this campus from 92
- [00:11:05.589]and we've got a little work to do on
- [00:11:07.089]Arthur County Nebraska by the way 92 of
- [00:11:11.079]the 93 counties in the state of Nebraska
- [00:11:13.379]every state and territory in the United
- [00:11:16.329]States and 131 countries around the
- [00:11:20.109]world I'm especially proud that almost
- [00:11:23.649]25% of our incoming freshman class this
- [00:11:26.499]year are first-generation students and
- [00:11:28.629]as you heard President Carter say a
- [00:11:30.489]moment ago I understand as many of you
- [00:11:33.309]do the challenge that it is to be the
- [00:11:36.039]first in a family to pursue a
- [00:11:37.479]baccalaureate degree we've initiated
- [00:11:40.509]several programs to help give our
- [00:11:42.249]first-generation students a step up to
- [00:11:44.919]success including first Huskers and
- [00:11:47.049]first-generation Nebraskans and as you
- [00:11:50.529]know we were also honored this year as
- [00:11:53.409]being a part of the inaugural cohort of
- [00:11:55.539]first Ford institutions nationally our
- [00:11:59.679]commitment to student success is evident
- [00:12:01.779]in our record graduation numbers with
- [00:12:03.849]this past year graduating a new set a
- [00:12:06.999]new record five thousand eight hundred
- [00:12:09.519]and sixty eight new Husker alumni making
- [00:12:12.699]our total number of graduates now almost
- [00:12:14.919]two hundred and ninety six thousand with
- [00:12:17.319]two hundred thousand living alumni all
- [00:12:20.049]over the world I'm very pleased that UNL
- [00:12:24.039]is part of APL use powered by publics
- [00:12:26.349]initiative involving a hundred and
- [00:12:28.419]thirty institutions around the country
- [00:12:30.039]working together in clusters to improve
- [00:12:33.069]access and graduation success in our
- [00:12:36.039]work as part of the big ten cluster has
- [00:12:39.249]a commitment to on our campus reducing
- [00:12:43.119]the equity gap in underrepresented
- [00:12:44.829]minority students in graduation success
- [00:12:47.739]by 50 percent
- [00:12:49.510]by 2025 while all the while continuing
- [00:12:53.380]to increase access part of the secret of
- [00:12:57.310]our success here at UNL is that we
- [00:12:59.410]believe in the power of every person we
- [00:13:01.990]know that when our University faculty
- [00:13:04.270]and staff work one-on-one with students
- [00:13:06.250]who may be struggling in one way or
- [00:13:08.770]another that we can help those students
- [00:13:11.350]to stretch their strengths and define
- [00:13:13.030]success in 2019 we began the big red
- [00:13:17.140]well resilience and well-being program
- [00:13:19.990]that relies heavily on the intensive use
- [00:13:22.750]of peer mentors this program helps our
- [00:13:26.440]students to develop a set of skills and
- [00:13:28.450]behaviors that will give them thoughts
- [00:13:30.670]and actions to manage change and perhaps
- [00:13:32.920]disappointment if it comes persisting
- [00:13:36.670]and growing through adversity enhances
- [00:13:38.860]flexibility and overall functioning and
- [00:13:41.230]well-being as we all know now we not
- [00:13:44.710]only provide a tremendous high value Big
- [00:13:47.170]Ten education and we do that by trying
- [00:13:49.600]to keep our tuition and fees as low as
- [00:13:52.030]possible for our students
- [00:13:53.590]but we also graduate and are very proud
- [00:13:55.810]of the fact that our students here have
- [00:13:57.970]one-third less debt than the national
- [00:14:01.000]average we send them out into the
- [00:14:03.820]workforce to do big things now I know
- [00:14:05.620]I'm guessing a few people watched the
- [00:14:07.630]Super Bowl here a few days ago did you
- [00:14:10.810]know that one of our graduates Ben buck
- [00:14:13.360]not took what he learned in Husker
- [00:14:15.850]vision and in the College of Journalism
- [00:14:17.050]and mass communications to be one of the
- [00:14:19.330]producers for the Kansas City Chiefs in
- [00:14:21.370]that game and he's just one of what we
- [00:14:24.640]could call literally thousands of
- [00:14:26.530]examples of our graduates that go on
- [00:14:29.500]into great success in their careers and
- [00:14:32.410]civic life we're also setting new
- [00:14:35.590]heights in the quantity and the quality
- [00:14:36.880]of our research and creative activity we
- [00:14:39.490]continued our record-breaking success
- [00:14:41.440]this year with 317 million in research
- [00:14:44.890]expenditures for you and L which
- [00:14:47.290]represents a 26 percent increase in the
- [00:14:49.870]past decade in our research activity a
- [00:14:52.900]14 percent increase in sponsored
- [00:14:55.420]research over the prior year and a 21
- [00:14:58.240]percent increase in federal awards over
- [00:15:00.670]the prior
- [00:15:01.910]that's just simply phenomenal momentum
- [00:15:04.550]and more importantly our work has the
- [00:15:07.790]power to transform lives the
- [00:15:10.370]achievements of our faculty in this
- [00:15:12.350]respect are drawing attention nationally
- [00:15:14.240]and internationally around the world and
- [00:15:16.370]candidly we felt it was important for us
- [00:15:19.190]to better tell that story this past year
- [00:15:22.130]so we did so by nationally storytelling
- [00:15:25.220]in areas like drones applied to multiple
- [00:15:28.160]applications digital humanities biology
- [00:15:30.980]national defense and feeding a hungry
- [00:15:33.440]world sustainably under a changing
- [00:15:36.080]climate the last two years in a row were
- [00:15:39.380]very proud of the fact that the
- [00:15:40.940]University of Nebraska system has been
- [00:15:42.650]named in the top 100 institutions
- [00:15:44.980]internationally in the number of US
- [00:15:47.300]patents filed with 31 filed in 28 2018
- [00:15:52.570]22 of which came from UNL and this past
- [00:15:56.540]year were on a record-setting pace of 35
- [00:15:59.900]that have already been named as
- [00:16:01.820]inventors on US patents and while I
- [00:16:05.540]don't have the time certainly this
- [00:16:06.920]morning to point them all out and name
- [00:16:08.750]them individually as you can see on the
- [00:16:11.150]screen behind me 2019 was a record year
- [00:16:13.730]of national and international
- [00:16:15.740]recognition of our world-leading faculty
- [00:16:17.780]and staff in honors for the research for
- [00:16:20.960]their scholarship through creative
- [00:16:22.550]activity their teaching excellence and
- [00:16:25.030]in fact in the University of Nebraska
- [00:16:28.130]system this year we're very pleased that
- [00:16:30.110]we swept the award categories got a brag
- [00:16:32.630]a little bit here Ted sorry but we swept
- [00:16:36.380]the award categories in the system
- [00:16:38.090]Awards across all areas and and I'll
- [00:16:41.420]tell you 2020 is looking pretty good too
- [00:16:42.920]so we'll leave that one
- [00:16:44.660]we'll leave that one alone we also
- [00:16:48.059]continue to lead nationally in our
- [00:16:49.889]land-grant university mission of
- [00:16:52.199]outreach to all of the citizens of our
- [00:16:55.470]state
- [00:16:56.119]Nebraska Extension is directly engaged
- [00:16:58.649]in all 93 counties of our state through
- [00:17:00.989]our federal local state partnerships in
- [00:17:03.029]those in those areas and you can't look
- [00:17:06.839]any further than this past year's
- [00:17:09.750]devastating blizzards and floods in our
- [00:17:12.240]state that had so much impact and will
- [00:17:14.130]have continuing impact in our state to
- [00:17:16.470]see the importance that Nebraska
- [00:17:17.819]Extension they were there during those
- [00:17:20.459]times as they've always been I know
- [00:17:22.079]you'll hear that from Dean Hobart here
- [00:17:24.059]in a moment to assist Nebraskans now I
- [00:17:26.429]just want to share one little simple
- [00:17:28.139]statistic with you this morning and let
- [00:17:30.899]that sink in to you Nebraska 4-h youth
- [00:17:34.919]development program led by Nebraska
- [00:17:36.720]Extension in 77 percent of the counties
- [00:17:40.260]in Nebraska 50% of age-eligible youth
- [00:17:44.850]are a member of 4h in over
- [00:17:47.309]three-quarters of the counties in this
- [00:17:49.289]state 50% of 9 to 18 year olds are a
- [00:17:52.950]member of Nebraska 4-h that's
- [00:17:55.019]unprecedented anywhere in the country
- [00:17:57.149]and you can only imagine the power that
- [00:17:59.549]that has for the future of our state as
- [00:18:02.070]well as the outreach the university has
- [00:18:04.470]to the people of Nebraska now I know
- [00:18:07.409]that you'll hear more highlights of how
- [00:18:09.480]we engage with the broader community
- [00:18:10.860]from our academic deans here in a few
- [00:18:13.260]minutes this morning because this is
- [00:18:15.120]occurring not just an extension but in
- [00:18:17.340]every corner of UNL across the
- [00:18:20.279]institution I would just sum all that up
- [00:18:23.429]by saying we are fundamental to the
- [00:18:26.070]future of Nebraska and the world now to
- [00:18:30.630]me it's somewhat ironic that in an age
- [00:18:33.389]where some are questioning the value of
- [00:18:35.700]higher education our value has never
- [00:18:38.820]been more important or apparent in the
- [00:18:42.299]face of challenges our university
- [00:18:43.980]creates opportunity with the power to
- [00:18:46.380]transform lives across Nebraska and
- [00:18:48.870]around the world we deliver an
- [00:18:51.840]outstanding education here that provides
- [00:18:54.419]students with the lifetime of economic
- [00:18:57.179]mobile
- [00:18:57.690]and we continued cutting-edge research
- [00:19:01.140]that saves lives grows our economy and
- [00:19:03.570]improves our quality of life we are
- [00:19:07.350]indeed educating the future workforce
- [00:19:09.480]here particularly for the state of
- [00:19:13.080]Nebraska in education business
- [00:19:15.720]engineering agricultural life sciences
- [00:19:17.790]in the environment healthcare government
- [00:19:20.220]media and communications the arts and
- [00:19:22.320]humanities the sciences architecture in
- [00:19:26.160]the built environment we are creating
- [00:19:29.520]that workforce for the future in all of
- [00:19:32.430]those areas I'm happy to tell you this
- [00:19:35.550]morning that we're investing in in
- [00:19:36.990]significantly expanding programs that
- [00:19:39.360]will produce the skilled work workers to
- [00:19:42.210]power tomorrow's economy for example
- [00:19:45.830]more than 4,000 of our current students
- [00:19:49.140]are engaged in high-tech fields or in
- [00:19:52.410]STEM related disciplines across our
- [00:19:55.020]campus were aligned in an effort
- [00:19:57.870]together within a the Omaha and Lincoln
- [00:20:00.240]chambers in the Nebraska tech
- [00:20:01.980]collaborative and the absorbant
- [00:20:03.840]foundation to increase the availability
- [00:20:07.890]of workers in these areas with support
- [00:20:11.490]from the private sector we announced
- [00:20:14.010]plans to build key wood Hall as a part
- [00:20:16.440]of our College of Engineering as
- [00:20:17.820]expansion to 5,000 students and I want
- [00:20:21.840]to particularly thank governor Ricketts
- [00:20:24.060]this morning for his support and
- [00:20:26.670]advocacy for what's called the high wage
- [00:20:29.100]high skill high demands job area for
- [00:20:31.620]scholarships that the legislature now
- [00:20:34.020]has under consideration a big part of
- [00:20:37.650]our engineering investment is now
- [00:20:39.480]underway in the development of a school
- [00:20:41.280]of computing facilitated with two and a
- [00:20:44.100]half million dollars of increased annual
- [00:20:46.530]investment into faculty and programs in
- [00:20:49.470]the area of computer science and
- [00:20:50.970]engineering holy to be housed within the
- [00:20:54.150]College of Engineering we expect to
- [00:20:57.300]double the number of graduates in
- [00:20:59.190]computer science software engineering
- [00:21:01.560]and Computer Engineering in the years
- [00:21:03.810]ahead to meet the needs of the workforce
- [00:21:06.240]for Nebraska
- [00:21:08.190]forward in the technology sector and I
- [00:21:11.730]would just also add to you this morning
- [00:21:14.039]that it's not enough just to think about
- [00:21:15.960]preparing our students for specific jobs
- [00:21:18.259]because you'd have to be hiding it or a
- [00:21:21.000]rock somewhere to not understand that
- [00:21:24.600]many of the jobs that our students today
- [00:21:27.120]will have haven't even been created or
- [00:21:31.049]imagined yet we need our students to
- [00:21:34.230]immediately engage with flexible nimble
- [00:21:36.720]and strong minds prepared for any
- [00:21:39.419]challenge and opportunity that may come
- [00:21:41.519]their way through their education now I
- [00:21:45.389]know that you're gonna hear from Dean
- [00:21:46.500]O'Connor here in a few minutes about the
- [00:21:48.899]the establishment and launch of the new
- [00:21:51.240]Johnny Carson Center for the emerging
- [00:21:53.009]media arts it's a perfect example of
- [00:21:55.259]what we're talking about here the
- [00:21:58.169]students in the Carson Center will
- [00:22:00.179]literally imagine the future and be the
- [00:22:02.490]leaders that helped to create it
- [00:22:06.320]speaking of leaders I think we are
- [00:22:08.909]exceptionally well positioned in 2020 in
- [00:22:11.669]having one of the best professional sets
- [00:22:14.279]of talent in the higher education sector
- [00:22:17.100]here at our University we've had a
- [00:22:20.009]number of new faculty join us this past
- [00:22:22.080]year we cannot be more excited to have
- [00:22:24.600]them in our classrooms and our labs and
- [00:22:26.610]our fields and in our studios we've also
- [00:22:29.940]welcomed a number of new leaders to our
- [00:22:31.950]campus this year led by Vice Chancellor
- [00:22:35.070]of the diversity and inclusion marco
- [00:22:37.049]barker who is here somewhere who has
- [00:22:39.929]come to us and is helping to challenge
- [00:22:42.600]us in our perceptions and our thinking
- [00:22:45.000]in building a climate that is welcoming
- [00:22:47.460]to all deans mark button sherry Jones
- [00:22:50.759]and Claire Stewart have already hit the
- [00:22:52.830]ground running in their colleges and in
- [00:22:54.659]the university libraries you'll be
- [00:22:56.009]hearing from them and all of our
- [00:22:57.870]academic deans here in a moment I'm very
- [00:23:00.409]pleased that dr. sherry Vail incoming
- [00:23:03.929]Dean of the College of Journalism and
- [00:23:05.370]mass communication will come to us July

- [00:23:10.080]duties at the University of Kentucky and
- [00:23:12.269]I would like to have you join me in
- [00:23:15.570]thanking this morning Amy Struthers for
- [00:23:18.240]her two years of service as the interim

- [00:23:21.690]journalism and mass communication as
- [00:23:23.639]well as Anna shavers who I would have to
- [00:23:26.549]say once again stepped up to be the
- [00:23:29.759]acting Dean of Nebraska law since June
- [00:23:41.290]and I don't I don't have adequate words
- [00:23:43.840]this morning to express the gratitude
- [00:23:45.790]and the admiration that I have for
- [00:23:48.670]Richard Moberly who left his beloved
- [00:23:51.630]position and role as the Dean of
- [00:23:54.370]Nebraska law to come over to us these
- [00:23:56.530]last nine months and provide exceptional
- [00:23:59.080]leadership as the interim executive vice
- [00:24:01.870]chancellor I'm going to miss Richards
- [00:24:04.110]wise counsel his leadership his
- [00:24:07.450]pragmatism his ability to unite people

- [00:24:51.240]in this role from the University of
- [00:24:52.860]California Davis where she's been
- [00:24:55.020]serving as the College of the Dean of

- [00:25:48.039]important part of our history and the
- [00:25:50.020]values that we have here is the
- [00:25:51.669]importance that we place on shared
- [00:25:53.230]governance at the University of
- [00:25:55.150]nebraska-lincoln where we co-lead the
- [00:25:56.980]institution with faculty and
- [00:25:59.080]administration and over the past year
- [00:26:01.720]our Faculty Senate and our faculty have
- [00:26:04.539]been working together with the
- [00:26:05.919]university administration to develop
- [00:26:08.020]needed changes in our vibe in our bylaws
- [00:26:11.520]particularly in regard to our policies
- [00:26:14.230]that might address gaps where we might
- [00:26:16.450]need to have involuntary leave of
- [00:26:19.120]absence for professional staff that's
- [00:26:23.049]been hard work it is resulted in a good
- [00:26:25.780]result that is now being considered or
- [00:26:28.510]going to be considered up through the
- [00:26:30.370]university and I would like to thank the
- [00:26:32.860]folks that have worked on that in
- [00:26:34.240]particular associate vice chancellor for
- [00:26:36.159]academic affairs Judy Walker and her
- [00:26:38.770]team we hope that we'll have opportunity
- [00:26:42.070]for this to go through the approval
- [00:26:44.140]process in coming months and be
- [00:26:46.360]instituted in the months ahead now I
- [00:26:51.940]just want to spend a little bit of time
- [00:26:54.549]in this next section talking to you
- [00:26:57.159]about how we're growing and building now
- [00:26:59.679]there's this thing in Nebraska all of us
- [00:27:02.409]that have been here for a long time know
- [00:27:03.940]it very well those of us who are joining
- [00:27:05.830]us will learn it really well
- [00:27:07.330]called the Sandhills grains where they
- [00:27:10.210]swarm the state beginning about this
- [00:27:13.030]time of year it's a thing of beauty that
- [00:27:14.950]we get to observe in Nebraska and I
- [00:27:18.250]would wager to you that that's not the
- [00:27:19.570]only thing that's going to be swarming
- [00:27:21.100]the next few years we have a really
- [00:27:25.659]unprecedented level of building growth
- [00:27:28.030]on our campus ahead the next three years
- [00:27:30.159]where we're going to be investing in
- [00:27:32.140]over over five hundred million dollars
- [00:27:34.900]in new facilities the next three years
- [00:27:37.659]on our campus and these projects while
- [00:27:41.110]they're a visual reminder to us they are
- [00:27:43.659]a commitment to the excellence in
- [00:27:46.419]teaching and learning and research space
- [00:27:48.400]for our institution you're aware that
- [00:27:51.850]this year we opened at the beginning of
- [00:27:54.039]the year the nine million dollar new

- [00:27:57.039]emerging media arts and
- [00:27:58.759]for our dance program in the Hickson

- [00:29:35.749]facility north of the Devaney Center and
- [00:29:38.859]we are continually boosting economic
- [00:29:42.319]development impact we're sitting at
- [00:29:44.479]Nebraska innovation campus for a reason
- [00:29:46.729]this morning I wanted to highlight this

- [00:30:58.940]create the combine incubator here at
- [00:31:01.310]Nick that will help us with capacity to
- [00:31:04.280]build the pipeline of tech founders in
- [00:31:06.320]agriculture in particular around
- [00:31:08.680]precision agriculture next month I'm
- [00:31:12.890]very excited that we have a date set for
- [00:31:15.080]the groundbreaking of a new one hundred
- [00:31:16.910]and fifty three room hotel just across

- [00:31:30.590]program and I can't tell you they tell
- [00:31:34.010]me I can't tell you this is really hard
- [00:31:35.870]for me but I can't tell you about the
- [00:31:38.120]theme of the hotel but I'll tell you it
- [00:31:39.440]has something to do with the University
- [00:31:40.610]of Nebraska
- [00:31:42.259]and as focused as we've been on
- [00:31:46.169]continuously enhancing our research and
- [00:31:48.389]creative activity capacity and
- [00:31:50.580]infrastructure we were founded as an
- [00:31:53.190]institution on access and it cannot be
- [00:31:56.549]too important for us to continue to try
- [00:31:59.580]to improve and work in the area of
- [00:32:01.950]inclusive excellence
- [00:32:03.809]that's what access is and I'm very
- [00:32:07.259]pleased that over this past year we've
- [00:32:09.840]seen major things begin to happen in
- [00:32:12.179]that area our first ever diversity
- [00:32:14.490]summit last fall led by Vice Chancellor
- [00:32:17.039]Barker a number of activities on our
- [00:32:19.259]campus and the formation of a council on
- [00:32:21.990]inclusive excellence in diversity that
- [00:32:24.179]will work across our campus to help
- [00:32:26.039]build in this area now I'm going to
- [00:32:29.759]wager to you that I think 2020 is a time
- [00:32:33.360]that we can say that we are truly rising
- [00:32:35.730]and I'm going to try to do it a little
- [00:32:37.619]different way this morning you know we
- [00:32:40.379]entered the Big Ten now about eight
- [00:32:42.570]years ago when we became a member of
- [00:32:45.360]this conference and it's been a big deal
- [00:32:47.730]for this institution not only the Big
- [00:32:51.029]Ten Athletic Conference with the Big Ten
- [00:32:52.740]academic alliance as you will know and
- [00:32:55.799]it's been a boost to our institution in
- [00:32:58.679]athletics in the college athletics
- [00:33:01.379]landscape that's constantly changing as
- [00:33:03.419]you know we're on solid ground in the
- [00:33:05.129]best conference in the United States
- [00:33:07.940]very few NCAA Division one institutions
- [00:33:11.940]can look at the financial aspects of
- [00:33:14.730]athletics and celebrate the success that
- [00:33:17.369]we have at Nebraska where our legendary
- [00:33:20.549]Husker fans sellout Memorial Stadium the
- [00:33:24.600]Devaney Center in Pinnacle Bank Arena on
- [00:33:27.360]an ongoing and regular basis were the
- [00:33:29.549]envy of every institution in the country
- [00:33:32.159]in that regard and it also allows us to
- [00:33:36.149]be in the position where Husker
- [00:33:37.440]athletics provides ten million dollars
- [00:33:39.749]annually to the academic mission of the
- [00:33:42.690]University of nebraska-lincoln including
- [00:33:45.090]this year a second year of five million
- [00:33:47.730]dollars of scholarship support that's
- [00:33:49.590]supporting 3,000 of our current students
- [00:33:52.379]as Huskers dollars who are non athlete
- [00:33:55.530]students as part of our equation here
- [00:33:58.110]we're very pleased and thankful for that
- [00:34:01.010]our student-athletes to in particular I
- [00:34:04.200]want to mention here this morning that's
- [00:34:06.030]just an extraordinary thing angela
- [00:34:09.030]Mercurio named the 2019 woman of the
- [00:34:12.150]year this past year only the second time
- [00:34:15.179]in Husker history for us to receive this
- [00:34:18.360]national award and just last month anton
- [00:34:21.270]stephenson all-american bench gymnast
- [00:34:23.940]now a student at UNMC received the 18th
- [00:34:28.190]NCAA today's top ten awards considered
- [00:34:31.470]the Heisman award for academics in the
- [00:34:34.520]NCAA now it's unusual folks for those
- [00:34:38.880]two big national honors to go to the big
- [00:34:41.790]10 conference it is extraordinary that
- [00:34:46.230]they both went to Huskers and I'd like
- [00:34:48.659]to ask you to give them a big round
- [00:35:00.160]and I should say you know it's it's
- [00:35:02.079]really not surprising to see that when
- [00:35:04.420]you consider that 338 academic
- [00:35:06.910]all-american record that the institution
- [00:35:09.819]continues the holds it's just who we are
- [00:35:11.770]at Nebraska as mentioned earlier our
- [00:35:15.430]faculty are rising in national
- [00:35:17.260]prominence and I want to just take I
- [00:35:18.910]know we mentioned this earlier but I
- [00:35:20.589]just want to point out a few people and
- [00:35:23.349]the very prominent awards that they've
- [00:35:25.089]received just in recent months this past
- [00:35:27.700]year English professor Kwame Das who won
- [00:35:32.170]the annual Windham Campbell Prize for
- [00:35:34.569]poetry fiction nonfiction literature and
- [00:35:38.200]drama one of the premier literary awards
- [00:35:40.720]in the world this past year he also won
- [00:35:43.839]an Emmy he also was named as a
- [00:35:46.030]Chancellor's the American Academy of
- [00:35:48.069]poets history professor Margaret Jacobs
- [00:35:51.549]named to the very prestigious American
- [00:35:53.650]Academy of Arts and Sciences this past
- [00:35:56.319]year biomedical engineer Angie pannier
- [00:35:59.440]who's sitting here over here on the side
- [00:36:01.480]who was named as a presidential early
- [00:36:04.059]career award for scientists by the White
- [00:36:05.829]House last summer first time ever in our
- [00:36:08.920]history received that for her research
- [00:36:10.750]on biomaterials and gene delivery
- [00:36:13.210]systems Edie Cahoon Tom Clemente and
- [00:36:16.390]Eileen habbits named fellows in the
- [00:36:18.609]American Association for the Advancement
- [00:36:19.930]of science this year and I would just
- [00:36:22.930]say to you prior to going into the big
- [00:36:25.329]ten our average was one a year our
- [00:36:27.819]average is now three a year about
- [00:36:30.279]fellows being named a triple is since
- [00:36:33.819]entering the Big Ten academic alliance
- [00:36:35.380]eight years ago we have seen consistent
- [00:36:37.990]increases in our national rankings and
- [00:36:39.940]our colleges of business engineering law
- [00:36:42.789]and education and Human Sciences our
- [00:36:45.880]Institute of Agriculture and Natural
- [00:36:47.529]Resources continues to be named amongst
- [00:36:50.319]the top 50 programs in the world in this
- [00:36:53.289]area and 19 of our graduate programs
- [00:36:58.000]across the campus
- [00:36:59.230]ranked in the top 25 percent nationally
- [00:37:01.750]in areas including this isn't the whole
- [00:37:04.329]list but including the areas of history
- [00:37:06.720]English physics sociology accountancy
- [00:37:10.690]special education and communication
- [00:37:12.730]disorders edge
- [00:37:13.950]national psychology and agronomy in
- [00:37:16.200]horticulture and as I said there are
- [00:37:17.760]more on that list the University of
- [00:37:20.820]Nebraska Foundation has been a key
- [00:37:23.160]partner in helping us to have this rise
- [00:37:25.500]in reputation and I can't tell you how
- [00:37:28.530]important it is that those private
- [00:37:31.710]donors support our investments in
- [00:37:34.200]students support our investments in
- [00:37:36.570]research and creative activity and
- [00:37:38.339]support our our investments in
- [00:37:40.560]infrastructure and I just want to thank
- [00:37:42.240]them I'd ask you to give them a round of
- [00:37:43.859]applause for our continued philanthropic
- [00:37:45.990]support and while we're on the rise I
- [00:37:53.880]would say that we're also very much
- [00:37:55.740]continuing to evolve and I want to talk
- [00:37:58.410]to you about two areas in that respect
- [00:38:00.300]this morning we're taking steps to
- [00:38:02.730]enhance our budget and management of our
- [00:38:05.160]budget and stewardship of our resources
- [00:38:07.380]now I faced you as you know the last
- [00:38:09.900]three years in a very different position
- [00:38:11.460]that we're in today the last three years
- [00:38:13.859]have been difficult budget years for us
- [00:38:16.140]at the University and I want to thank
- [00:38:17.880]everyone who has helped to get us in a
- [00:38:20.040]better position it's been hard the last
- [00:38:22.200]three years but we do have an improved
- [00:38:24.300]climate particularly in terms of the
- [00:38:26.640]state budget it's much more stable at
- [00:38:29.280]this point in time and oh we're very
- [00:38:31.290]pleased about that but we also know that
- [00:38:35.640]even though we're on that positive
- [00:38:36.990]footing and it's better than the past
- [00:38:39.420]three years has been that we have needs
- [00:38:42.300]to address our budget model as you've
- [00:38:44.609]heard us talk a lot about these past two
- [00:38:46.950]years and we've begun on that journey of
- [00:38:48.900]moving to an incentive-based budget
- [00:38:51.780]model and you feel remember a year ago
- [00:38:55.170]at this address
- [00:38:56.220]I said that I considered this to be the
- [00:38:59.250]biggest short-term priority for the
- [00:39:02.190]University of nebraska-lincoln because
- [00:39:04.410]we wanted to enable and empower the kind
- [00:39:07.170]of growth strategically that we want and
- [00:39:09.510]that we call for in the strategic plan
- [00:39:12.240]we're going to talk about here in a
- [00:39:13.680]moment now we've come a long way on the
- [00:39:16.890]journey of the development of this
- [00:39:18.180]budget model and I want to thank
- [00:39:19.770]everyone who has worked on it in
- [00:39:21.300]particular bill Nunez our vice
- [00:39:23.430]chancellor of Business and Finance and
- [00:39:25.260]Kathy Ferro our Dean of the College of
- [00:39:26.880]Business
- [00:39:27.360]who have co-chaired the steering
- [00:39:29.400]committee in working to develop this new
- [00:39:31.980]model over the last couple of years
- [00:39:33.710]we've largely defined the model to this
- [00:39:36.810]point a great deal of work has gone into
- [00:39:38.580]that and socializing that with our
- [00:39:40.410]Dean's and with our Vice Chancellors to
- [00:39:43.350]understand how it will begin to change
- [00:39:45.420]our planning and our framework for our
- [00:39:48.300]budget now I want to clear a couple of
- [00:39:50.670]things up you know we've we've used the
- [00:39:53.130]term shadow year for the year that we're
- [00:39:56.040]in in our budget development process and
- [00:39:58.650]perhaps it's been a little confusing to
- [00:40:00.120]some I want to make sure we're clear
- [00:40:02.100]this morning there is no magic switch
- [00:40:04.710]that will happen on July 1st of this
- [00:40:07.140]year when we move into the new fiscal
- [00:40:09.270]year nor is there any fiscal cliff that
- [00:40:12.900]will imperil any of our units in the
- [00:40:15.990]future what really kicks in this next
- [00:40:18.870]year is in our planning utilizing the
- [00:40:21.150]budget model to form our budget for
- [00:40:23.760]moving forward throughout this next
- [00:40:26.790]fiscal year will model revenues and plan
- [00:40:28.740]budgets in a new way one that allows us
- [00:40:31.920]to reward growth reinvest in our future
- [00:40:35.010]and ensure the success of the common
- [00:40:37.440]good
- [00:40:38.040]I have no idea what's up there every
- [00:40:43.650]year they got to do something folks so
- [00:40:46.760]but even as the effects of the new
- [00:40:49.200]budget take hold in July of 2021 there's
- [00:40:52.740]still no magic switch or fiscal cliff
- [00:40:55.760]there will be I'll emphasize this there
- [00:40:59.520]must be an iterative process in this
- [00:41:02.700]implementation of our new budget model
- [00:41:04.560]it'll be two to three years before the
- [00:41:07.140]fall effects of the budget model are in
- [00:41:09.000]place and I can tell you that I cannot
- [00:41:11.130]wait to see the imaginative prospects
- [00:41:13.230]for what it does to allow us to
- [00:41:15.360]strategically invest in the university
- [00:41:17.940]moving forward what I ask each of you is
- [00:41:21.000]to engage if you have questions ask them
- [00:41:24.210]we've had a lot of dialogue about this
- [00:41:25.830]this past year and I want you to engage
- [00:41:28.470]realize that we're in this all together
- [00:41:30.920]that it's a collaborative effort and
- [00:41:33.330]that if we work in that way it will be
- [00:41:35.490]for the good of the university long term
- [00:41:38.700]I'm sure we'll be stronger for it and as
- [00:41:41.730]we get our budget model up and running
- [00:41:43.410]I'm most excited for how it will develop
- [00:41:46.410]as I said our ability to advance our
- [00:41:48.930]strategic priorities for the university
- [00:41:51.780]as a whole now you might remember last
- [00:41:54.390]year last year was a little different we
- [00:41:56.550]were getting ready to celebrate our
- [00:41:57.690]150th anniversary we talked a lot about
- [00:41:59.670]our history and what led to that but I
- [00:42:02.490]said that I hoped that our leaders in
- [00:42:05.280]the future would look back and say that
- [00:42:07.170]we're boldly imagining I would also
- [00:42:10.290]follow that by saying it's not enough
- [00:42:12.240]just to boldly imagine you have to you
- [00:42:15.270]have to do something to make that happen
- [00:42:17.490]yeah as well and I'm immensely pleased
- [00:42:21.180]this morning that today we were taking
- [00:42:24.089]actions to be boldly strategic you'll
- [00:42:27.119]remember a year ago we talked about the
- [00:42:29.010]N 150 Commission and the report of that
- [00:42:31.859]commission around a big 25 year vision
- [00:42:33.930]for our university and it's worth
- [00:42:36.540]reiterating here what was said in that
- [00:42:38.660]kind of the big statement was that we
- [00:42:41.369]hoped UNL would be unparalleled among
- [00:42:43.440]public research universities and access
- [00:42:45.599]and opportunity and innovation and in
- [00:42:47.940]lifelong experiential learning through
- [00:42:51.720]the intensive work of the N 150
- [00:42:54.180]Commission they laid out that
- [00:42:55.500]imaginative 25 year journey and I would
- [00:42:57.839]say it's a significant journey that lies
- [00:43:00.300]ahead of us you can't begin a big
- [00:43:03.180]journey without taking first steps so
- [00:43:06.150]earlier this past year we asked a group
- [00:43:09.210]of 30 leaders from across the university
- [00:43:12.089]making ups faculty staff students and
- [00:43:15.470]administration to take on the leadership
- [00:43:17.849]of the development of a first five-year
- [00:43:20.250]plan in a aspiring to that vision I
- [00:43:24.109]asked them to think boldly and to lay
- [00:43:27.540]out concrete steps to get us down the
- [00:43:30.270]path of the first five years of the N
- [00:43:33.150]150 to the year 2025 I couldn't be
- [00:43:37.740]prouder of the accomplishments of this
- [00:43:39.510]group or more appreciative of their
- [00:43:41.640]efforts I'd like to ask the entire in
- [00:43:43.530]2025 development team if you would
- [00:43:45.720]please stand if you're in the audience
- [00:43:47.609]on to a number of you were here this
- [00:43:48.900]morning please stand
- [00:43:51.020]and let us thank you for your work now
- [00:43:58.430]you for keep standing up you for in
- [00:44:02.320]particular we will forever be indebted
- [00:44:04.610]to these for our faculty co-chairs who
- [00:44:12.770]led this effort
- [00:44:13.820]Rick Bevins Susan Sherrod and Angela
- [00:44:16.910]paneer and Shane Farah der they are
- [00:44:19.340]amazing leaders I wanted this to be
- [00:44:21.500]faculty led to be led by our
- [00:44:23.570]distinguished professors and we thank
- [00:44:25.070]you so much for what you've done you you
- [00:44:28.070]actually pushed us even harder than I
- [00:44:31.190]thought that you might you had an
- [00:44:33.860]incredibly collaborative effort across
- [00:44:35.630]our campus and even told me a time or
- [00:44:38.420]two that we probably were going too far
- [00:44:40.880]so I really appreciate your your effort
- [00:44:43.600]now I'm very pleased today that we've
- [00:44:46.580]crossed the finish line if you will and
- [00:44:48.730]we are now releasing today for the first
- [00:44:51.740]time our in 2025 plan now I think you
- [00:44:58.610]will receive this and they give your
- [00:45:00.320]printed copies that you can receive on
- [00:45:02.420]the way off the door of the 2025 plan
- [00:45:04.490]and its efforts this again is important
- [00:45:08.690]four steps for us you know it's
- [00:45:11.450]difficult for us to be the University in
- [00:45:13.790]2040 for that 25-year vision if we don't
- [00:45:17.120]take these first steps I will tell you
- [00:45:18.830]that I think this plan gets it right it
- [00:45:22.070]hits the right notes it focuses on the
- [00:45:24.560]right aims it will stretch us in
- [00:45:26.420]meaningful and significant ways the
- [00:45:29.720]overarching theme for the plan every
- [00:45:32.240]person and every interaction matters is
- [00:45:34.460]one of the core aspirations from the N
- [00:45:36.830]150 Commission report it speaks clearly
- [00:45:40.040]and loudly to the aims the strategies
- [00:45:42.590]and the targets of the plan and it
- [00:45:45.050]resonates so personally with who we are
- [00:45:47.090]at Nebraska where we believe in the
- [00:45:49.970]power of every person we believe we
- [00:45:52.430]offer opportunities for one-to-one
- [00:45:53.960]engagement that will propel the success
- [00:45:56.180]of our students and of our research and
- [00:45:58.010]the impact of our engagement staying
- [00:46:01.070]true to this idea
- [00:46:02.390]therefore it being a prince
- [00:46:04.460]whole piece of the plan empowers us to
- [00:46:07.490]do the big things called for in this
- [00:46:10.040]strategic plan the next five years the
- [00:46:13.070]end 2025 plan has six strategic aims for
- [00:46:16.670]our campus that deal with student
- [00:46:18.230]success and learning deals with creative
- [00:46:20.810]activity and scholarship deals with
- [00:46:22.849]engagement deals with a diversity and
- [00:46:24.710]inclusive excellence and deals with
- [00:46:26.570]investing in our people here at the
- [00:46:28.880]University and I'll give you just a
- [00:46:31.700]snapshot of these six aims if you will
- [00:46:33.859]along with the targets that have been
- [00:46:35.780]set in this strategic plan
- [00:46:38.270]moving forward the first name calls us
- [00:46:41.119]to innovate student experience that
- [00:46:42.800]prepare graduates to be lifelong
- [00:46:44.599]learners and contributors to the
- [00:46:46.160]workforce of Nebraska in the world in
- [00:46:48.710]this particular aim you'll see that we
- [00:46:51.830]seek to increase our four-year
- [00:46:53.150]graduation rate to 55 percent and our
- [00:46:55.339]six-year graduation rate to 72 percent
- [00:46:57.470]but more importantly folks I would say
- [00:47:00.609]focusing on retention and increasing our
- [00:47:03.980]first to second year student retention
- [00:47:05.839]rate to 88 percent and our total
- [00:47:08.420]enrollment collectively to 15 percent
- [00:47:11.410]perhaps the most audacious goal and I'm
- [00:47:14.180]going to point to this specifically
- [00:47:15.440]because I think it's the biggest one in
- [00:47:17.300]the whole document is the last one here
- [00:47:20.710]where we're focused on an experiential
- [00:47:23.390]learning portfolio for our students we
- [00:47:27.020]do some of this today we don't do it
- [00:47:28.700]across the board nor do we track it
- [00:47:30.520]effectively and to put this in
- [00:47:32.930]perspective folks next fall 2021 is the
- [00:47:36.950]entering class of 2025 five years from
- [00:47:41.089]now and this old cost for us to have an
- [00:47:44.869]experiential portfolio in those students
- [00:47:47.570]that includes intern internships and
- [00:47:50.630]apprenticeships an international
- [00:47:52.339]engagement in community problem-solving
- [00:47:54.500]and research experience that is a big
- [00:47:57.530]goal and I can't underline it enough
- [00:48:00.339]under the second and third aims we will
- [00:48:02.839]establish a culture at Nebraska
- [00:48:04.550]committed to increasing the impact of
- [00:48:06.530]research and creative activity and
- [00:48:08.470]focusing our research we are scholarship
- [00:48:11.300]and creative activity in
- [00:48:12.460]interdisciplinary ways and solving
- [00:48:15.109]challenges critical to Nebraska
- [00:48:17.520]in the world we want to reach 450
- [00:48:20.880]million in research experience
- [00:48:22.610]expenditures you saw the number earlier
- [00:48:24.510]of where we are today and increase the
- [00:48:27.720]prestige awarded to our faculty we want
- [00:48:31.230]to broaden the interdisciplinary
- [00:48:32.220]research and increase our intellectual
- [00:48:34.950]property and transfer of that
- [00:48:37.110]intellectual property into the public we
- [00:48:40.290]also want to prioritize 50% of our
- [00:48:42.750]investments strategically into what we
- [00:48:45.510]will call Grand Challenge areas like
- [00:48:48.630]this is not all-inclusive but like areas
- [00:48:51.690]of early childhood development in
- [00:48:53.220]education or feeding a hungry world
- [00:48:56.310]under a sustainable climate or you know
- [00:49:00.150]a resiliency in a changing climate our
- [00:49:04.620]next step in 2020 is to immediately
- [00:49:06.930]identify what this suite of Grand
- [00:49:09.030]Challenges will be for us over the
- [00:49:12.270]number of years ahead
- [00:49:13.820]our fourth aim asks us to broaden
- [00:49:16.650]Nebraska's engagement in community
- [00:49:18.690]industry and global partnerships this
- [00:49:21.600]aim has only three targets it looks
- [00:49:23.940]short
- [00:49:24.540]but the one of those is a quite big one
- [00:49:27.260]the dean designated as a carnegie
- [00:49:29.970]community engagement campus that has a
- [00:49:32.910]whole tremendous number of metrics
- [00:49:35.010]associated with it I will tell you that
- [00:49:38.100]this is a lofty goal and success will
- [00:49:39.900]require a concerted effort on the part
- [00:49:41.430]of all of us now we just celebrated one
- [00:49:45.420]hundred and fiftieth anniversary as a
- [00:49:47.010]committed peoples university to all of
- [00:49:50.250]the people of this state whether it's
- [00:49:52.770]the rural areas the urban areas across
- [00:49:55.110]our entire state of Nebraska I will tell
- [00:49:57.480]you that if there is an institution that
- [00:49:58.830]should be designated this we should
- [00:50:01.200]aspire to be it's the University of
- [00:50:03.180]nebraska-lincoln and will enhance our
- [00:50:05.750]commitment to the people of the great
- [00:50:08.820]state of Nebraska in the 15 we reiterate
- [00:50:12.930]our commitment to create a climate at
- [00:50:14.790]Nebraska that emphasizes prioritizes and
- [00:50:17.610]expands inclusive excellence and
- [00:50:19.380]diversity folks we will not be
- [00:50:22.140]successful if we don't do this we will
- [00:50:25.770]not be successful if we don't reduce
- [00:50:28.110]barriers increase diversity and boost
- [00:50:30.300]the six
- [00:50:30.960]for all of our students faculty and
- [00:50:33.120]staff this aim provides specific goals
- [00:50:36.330]for us in increasing the participation
- [00:50:38.400]and success of underrepresented groups
- [00:50:40.980]across our university we will never be
- [00:50:45.180]an unparalleled university without
- [00:50:46.800]amazing people and investment in them
- [00:50:49.470]I'm inspired every day by the work of
- [00:50:52.020]our over 6300 faculty and staff here at
- [00:50:55.680]UNL but we must prioritize participation
- [00:50:58.830]in professional development for all
- [00:51:00.330]Nebraska students staff and faculty the
- [00:51:04.680]targets in this aim speak directly to
- [00:51:06.750]this and will require us to act across
- [00:51:08.550]the board in ways that we don't
- [00:51:10.170]currently for example the need to
- [00:51:13.200]develop the processes and needed
- [00:51:14.670]documentation for individualized
- [00:51:17.280]professional development plans for all
- [00:51:19.590]of our employees and professionals
- [00:51:22.710]across the institution and we will begin
- [00:51:25.650]our work toward inclusion of staff into
- [00:51:28.740]the university's governance framework
- [00:51:30.630]along with our faculty and our students
- [00:51:33.990]as a public university we must always be
- [00:51:38.040]good stewards of the resources that are
- [00:51:39.990]committed to us the new budget model we
- [00:51:43.410]were just speaking about will help us
- [00:51:45.720]through incentivizing efficiencies in
- [00:51:47.670]prioritizing the investment of resources
- [00:51:49.770]to align with our strategic priorities
- [00:51:52.020]and we must folks continue to find ways
- [00:51:55.620]to be more energy efficient and
- [00:51:57.330]sustainable across our campus and in our
- [00:51:59.610]university operations including I would
- [00:52:02.430]say reduction of administrative overhead
- [00:52:05.090]you are likely asking yourselves now
- [00:52:08.370]this all sounds great
- [00:52:09.660]but how are we going to get it done and
- [00:52:12.030]what's the implementation steps that we
- [00:52:14.760]have to move forward in the coming weeks
- [00:52:17.160]we will be assigning leaders that will
- [00:52:19.560]be accountable for each of these targets
- [00:52:21.780]while they will not achieve them alone
- [00:52:23.880]it's going to require all of us to work
- [00:52:25.620]together there'll be the accountable
- [00:52:27.900]party that will be working to help the
- [00:52:30.390]organization achieve these aims and
- [00:52:32.730]targets and marshal the efforts that
- [00:52:34.770]will be needed for us to achieve them
- [00:52:36.480]moving forward we will regularly
- [00:52:39.300]communicate to you across the campus
- [00:52:41.220]about the end 2025
- [00:52:43.140]and our progress on these goals and I
- [00:52:45.180]will I will say to you look a five-year
- [00:52:47.730]plan I expect us every year to
- [00:52:50.400]re-evaluate whether our aims and targets
- [00:52:52.860]are adequate whether we need to adjust
- [00:52:54.960]them up or down in terms of the time
- [00:52:58.530]that we move forward and I'm confident
- [00:53:01.380]folks that if we can achieve these six
- [00:53:04.200]aims and hit our targets we will be well
- [00:53:07.050]on our way to realizing that imaginative
- [00:53:09.360]future laid out in the end 150
- [00:53:11.910]Commission report a year ago our
- [00:53:14.820]students will be prepared to boldly and
- [00:53:16.770]nimbly step into the future into
- [00:53:18.570]successful careers our research will
- [00:53:20.880]have an even greater impact in stature
- [00:53:23.090]nationally and internationally and we
- [00:53:26.100]will have done far more to achieve our
- [00:53:28.380]land-grant mission for the people of the
- [00:53:31.380]state of Nebraska now if I was to wrap
- [00:53:34.320]all of that together I will tell you
- [00:53:36.600]that I think we sit at a really
- [00:53:38.970]interesting and promising inflection
- [00:53:40.980]point at this point in time in our
- [00:53:43.890]history we have incredible people were
- [00:53:47.280]rising as we talked about and growing
- [00:53:49.110]earlier we have momentum that continues
- [00:53:51.390]to build and I think we're poised for an
- [00:53:54.690]incredible future that lies ahead I
- [00:53:56.850]think this plan gives us the platform to
- [00:54:00.540]move that forward at an even elevated
- [00:54:02.490]level and now simply folks it's time to
- [00:54:05.520]get off on to the races and to let it go
- [00:54:08.610]to get it done so I'm very pleased about
- [00:54:11.340]that now I have a special treat for you
- [00:54:14.250]this morning in two pieces one is we've
- [00:54:17.310]got a new format this year you're going
- [00:54:18.990]to hear from our academic deans here in
- [00:54:21.750]a few moments to tell you a little bit
- [00:54:23.580]about how they see the state of their
- [00:54:25.170]College and we look forward to them
- [00:54:27.210]doing that in between I had the
- [00:54:29.970]privilege Jane and I had the privilege
- [00:54:31.770]of hearing the next group of students
- [00:54:33.480]that you're going to hear from now a
- [00:54:36.480]group of our cusp scholars from Rwanda
- [00:54:38.940]that have a special musical piece for
- [00:54:41.790]you I hope you will enjoy it we'll come
- [00:54:44.580]back afterwards have a little bit of
- [00:54:46.200]dialogue after year from the deans thank
- [00:54:48.360]you
- [00:54:50.270]I think friendship with inference to be
- [00:55:14.780]something buddy all over the word but I
- [00:55:17.660]don't wear
- [00:55:18.480][Music]
- [00:55:50.500][Music]
- [00:55:58.780][Music]
- [00:56:04.050][Music]
- [00:56:53.680][Music]
- [00:56:59.420][Music]
- [00:58:06.190][Music]
- [00:58:25.700][Music]
- [00:58:46.240][Music]
- [00:58:57.660][Music]
- [00:59:04.080][Music]
- [00:59:26.100][Applause]
- [00:59:30.490][Music]
- [00:59:36.620][Music]
- [00:59:44.200][Applause]
- [00:59:58.999]good morning thanks for everyone for
- [01:00:03.749]being here thank you Chancellor green
- [01:00:05.549]for such an inspirational message it's
- [01:00:07.499]really been a pleasure to work with you
- [01:00:08.999]so I'd now like to spend just a few
- [01:00:10.890]minutes giving an update on the College
- [01:00:12.390]of Engineering so the University of
- [01:00:14.969]nebraska-lincoln began teaching
- [01:00:16.289]engineering in 1877 just eight years
- [01:00:18.900]after its founding and last year while
- [01:00:21.779]UNL was celebrating its 150th
- [01:00:23.759]anniversary the College of Engineering
- [01:00:25.739]was celebrating its 110th anniversary as
- [01:00:28.799]a college in our time as a College of
- [01:00:31.559]Engineering we have educated over 30,000
- [01:00:34.579]construction engineering and computing
- [01:00:36.930]professionals who have gone on to
- [01:00:39.089]successful careers and being leaders in
- [01:00:41.369]their communities and their profession
- [01:00:43.289]as we reflected on our 110 hit a 110
- [01:00:47.729]year history we are also making
- [01:00:49.619]significant progress on our goals to
- [01:00:52.140]become a major source of economic
- [01:00:54.390]development in the state and the region
- [01:00:55.859]while solving problems of global
- [01:00:58.049]importance this of course begins with
- [01:01:00.959]our faculty next slide please
- [01:01:03.469]thank you I when we joined the Big Ten
- [01:01:07.650]we joined without question the single
- [01:01:10.619]best collection of colleges of
- [01:01:12.209]engineering in the world and we are now
- [01:01:14.609]successfully competing with those
- [01:01:18.209]colleges across our educational research
- [01:01:21.119]and engagement activities we've hired 43
- [01:01:24.599]new faculty in the last three years our
- [01:01:26.400]faculty have won five national science
- [01:01:29.190]foundation career Awards in the last
- [01:01:31.289]five years by far the most competitive
- [01:01:33.569]award our young engineering faculty
- [01:01:35.309]member can get our faculty are
- [01:01:37.259]conducting world-leading research and
- [01:01:39.779]biomedical areas developing new surgical
- [01:01:42.809]techniques technologies that will save
- [01:01:45.449]the lives of civilians and soldiers who
- [01:01:47.339]have traumatic pulmonary injuries
- [01:01:50.630]transforming agriculture they are
- [01:01:53.400]looking at ways of 3d printing metals
- [01:01:55.709]that will transform the manufacturing
- [01:01:58.709]industry and allows screws that are put
- [01:02:00.809]in during orthopedic surgery to be
- [01:02:02.400]absorbed by the body
- [01:02:03.359]this research enterprise
- [01:02:05.280]is going to positively impact the life
- [01:02:07.530]of every Nebraskan next slide please
- [01:02:10.910]we're very proud of of our complete
- [01:02:13.410]engineer program this program developed
- [01:02:15.870]six non-technical competencies and our
- [01:02:17.790]students that is giving our graduates a
- [01:02:20.100]competitive advantage when they enter
- [01:02:21.720]the workforce it is generating allowing
- [01:02:24.360]the young women who leave the college to
- [01:02:26.310]become leaders in the engineering
- [01:02:28.380]computing and construction fields in a
- [01:02:30.720]way that is allowing that is giving them
- [01:02:35.130]a competitive advantage and allowing
- [01:02:36.720]engineering to move forward in a
- [01:02:38.190]sustainable way over half of our
- [01:02:40.740]graduates stay in the state of Nebraska
- [01:02:42.090]we have 11,000 students that are
- [01:02:44.460]currently a graduates that are currently
- [01:02:46.920]working in Nebraska there are leaders in
- [01:02:49.020]industry with companies like Olson HDR
- [01:02:53.450]kiewit company and the Leo Daley last
- [01:02:58.290]slide please thank you as I have run out
- [01:02:59.970]of time you've heard a lot the the
- [01:03:03.300]shepherd's crook is about to come out we
- [01:03:05.600]you've heard a lot about key wood Hall
- [01:03:07.740]this building is going to transform the
- [01:03:09.990]educational experience for our students
- [01:03:11.880]it's also going to give the 5,000
- [01:03:13.800]students who live in able in Sandoz hall
- [01:03:16.260]a new academic quad we're really
- [01:03:18.420]grateful for the support of the Nebraska
- [01:03:20.010]philanthropic community for making this
- [01:03:22.680]happen particularly Peter Kiewit and
- [01:03:25.290]Sons who gave a naming gift and the able
- [01:03:27.120]family who've donated land to make this
- [01:03:28.950]happen none of this would happen without
- [01:03:30.930]the great faculty staff and students in
- [01:03:32.910]the College of Engineering and without
- [01:03:34.590]the support of the university leadership
- [01:03:36.750]including the chancellor's office and
- [01:03:38.550]the president's office thank you very
- [01:03:40.020]much
- [01:03:40.810][Applause]
- [01:03:42.050][Music]
- [01:03:49.520]so the mission next slide please
- [01:03:52.290]the mission of the agricultural research
- [01:03:54.720]division is to support the science to
- [01:03:58.260]ensure resilient food systems and a
- [01:04:02.310]healthy global future and our faculty
- [01:04:04.500]continue to build transdisciplinary
- [01:04:06.690]teams across the University of Nebraska
- [01:04:09.599]system and beyond to address a breadth
- [01:04:13.050]of Grand Challenges within that mission
- [01:04:16.400]framework and there are many metrics
- [01:04:19.470]that reflect their success the primary
- [01:04:22.109]measure is sponsored research
- [01:04:24.950]expenditures and that number has
- [01:04:27.450]remained at an all-time high for these
- [01:04:30.450]faculty in the past year of over fifty
- [01:04:33.359]four million dollars and has increased
- [01:04:36.230]25% in the last five years there are
- [01:04:39.990]also many many examples of programmatic
- [01:04:42.829]successes and impacts so I could
- [01:04:46.170]highlight a lot of things but what I've
- [01:04:47.640]chosen to do on this slide is to
- [01:04:49.440]recognize a major accomplishment by some
- [01:04:52.890]of our most junior faculty the National
- [01:04:56.069]Science Foundation Career Award is one
- [01:04:59.579]of the most prestigious research awards
- [01:05:02.310]for junior faculty you and UNL was very
- [01:05:05.490]honored in the past year to have five
- [01:05:07.680]awardees and for those have ARD
- [01:05:10.349]appointments rebecca austin studying
- [01:05:13.430]mechanisms of toll of sorry of cold
- [01:05:17.430]tolerance implants joe lewis studying
- [01:05:20.940]plant insect interactions toshi ibadah
- [01:05:24.589]studying fundamental responses to biotic
- [01:05:28.349]stresses like drought and important
- [01:05:30.180]crops like corn and Rebecca walks
- [01:05:33.680]exploring alternative treatments for
- [01:05:36.900]pain using biomaterials so I appreciate
- [01:05:40.440]the chance to just say thank you to all
- [01:05:42.510]of our faculty for their hard work and
- [01:05:45.060]dedication
- [01:05:51.300]good morning everybody I'm Chuck Hubbard
- [01:05:53.859]Dean and director of Nebraska Extension
- [01:05:55.630]I'm from Lexington Nebraska and I'm a
- [01:05:58.150]graduate of this amazing educational
- [01:06:00.520]institution I'm just really really proud
- [01:06:02.109]of that and on top of that I get to work
- [01:06:04.150]here now it just doesn't get much better
- [01:06:05.800]right so we wanted to tell you just a
- [01:06:07.599]little bit about Nebraska Extension you
- [01:06:09.430]may know about our mission to serve all
- [01:06:11.619]93 counties of the state of Nebraska in
- [01:06:14.080]a network that really does connect
- [01:06:17.290]people with this University
- [01:06:19.180]we've been organized in five extension
- [01:06:21.640]districts for about the last ten years
- [01:06:23.410]or so and one of the things that we
- [01:06:25.060]wanted to do was to really double down
- [01:06:27.310]on our connection with our employees our
- [01:06:29.530]stakeholders and Nebraskans and so what
- [01:06:32.590]we've done is to reorganize into 11 what
- [01:06:36.280]we call engagement zones ok and so we're
- [01:06:40.750]in the process we've hired nine of our
- [01:06:43.150]11 engagement zone coordinators you can
- [01:06:45.460]see their photos on the lower right of
- [01:06:47.560]the screen what we really want to be
- [01:06:49.869]able to accomplish with these people in
- [01:06:51.880]their work a distributed leadership
- [01:06:53.440]model across the state number one really
- [01:06:56.320]focused on employee success you may not
- [01:06:59.230]know that half of extension field-based
- [01:07:01.630]faculty in Nebraska have been on the job
- [01:07:04.630]for less than five years this is a youth
- [01:07:07.060]movement that's bringing incredible
- [01:07:08.710]talent into our organization we want to
- [01:07:10.960]take care of those folks and give them
- [01:07:12.700]an opportunity to be successful the
- [01:07:15.160]second role is to really amp up our work
- [01:07:17.530]in stakeholder relationships with
- [01:07:19.359]partners with county government with our
- [01:07:21.910]Extension boards and others and really
- [01:07:24.190]do that better and more effectively and
- [01:07:26.560]then third to follow up on Ronnie's
- [01:07:30.010]announcement today about the University
- [01:07:32.050]of nebraska-lincoln engagement
- [01:07:33.520]commitment to engagement
- [01:07:34.810]these folks are being asked to connect
- [01:07:37.450]with leaders in their communities people
- [01:07:40.210]involved in government and organizations
- [01:07:42.550]libraries educational institutions etc
- [01:07:45.780]build those relationships and ask lots
- [01:07:49.030]of powerful questions so that we can
- [01:07:51.430]better understand what the needs and
- [01:07:53.320]opportunities are that Nebraskans seek
- [01:07:55.960]this is so important to our engagement
- [01:07:58.119]mission because I've always believed
- [01:08:00.520]that we should
- [01:08:01.240]go into a community and do it to them we
- [01:08:04.660]should go into a community ask lots of
- [01:08:06.670]questions
- [01:08:07.510]build the relationships and do it with
- [01:08:10.210]them
- [01:08:10.750]that's what engagement is all about
- [01:08:12.580]thank you very much
- [01:08:18.810]well good morning my name is Tiffany
- [01:08:21.520]Heng moss and I have the honor of
- [01:08:23.140]serving as dean for the College of
- [01:08:25.060]Agricultural Sciences and Natural
- [01:08:26.890]Resources it's an exciting time for our
- [01:08:29.530]College and the Institute of Ag and
- [01:08:31.480]natural resources we have a number of
- [01:08:33.609]strategic priorities under way including
- [01:08:36.390]transforming graduate education a
- [01:08:38.760]holistic focus on student development by
- [01:08:41.800]linking curricular programming with
- [01:08:44.170]experiential learning co-curricular
- [01:08:46.480]opportunities student health and
- [01:08:48.430]well-being and inclusive excellence
- [01:08:50.410]we're also partnering with Nebraska
- [01:08:52.390]Extension to serve the continuum of
- [01:08:54.609]learners in our state so the creation of
- [01:08:57.640]the northeast Nebraska agriculture and
- [01:09:00.100]natural resources education compact is
- [01:09:02.530]an example of our focus on the continuum
- [01:09:05.530]of learners this is the first education
- [01:09:08.109]compact for the state of Nebraska so
- [01:09:10.420]it's a really big deal the compact
- [01:09:12.700]combines the strengths of the partnering
- [01:09:14.980]institutions to serve the diverse
- [01:09:17.010]educational needs of our youth and
- [01:09:19.480]lifelong learners and also contribute to
- [01:09:21.940]talent and workforce development in the
- [01:09:24.370]northeast part of the state as you can
- [01:09:26.650]see we have a number of partners on this
- [01:09:29.410]program first we have little priests
- [01:09:31.839]tribal College we have Nebraska College
- [01:09:34.390]of technical agriculture the Nebraska
- [01:09:36.790]Indian Community College Northeast
- [01:09:39.190]Community College Wayne Community
- [01:09:41.260]Schools Wayne State College Nebraska
- [01:09:44.040]extension and Kasner this program
- [01:09:47.620]supports both state and local and
- [01:09:50.440]national initiatives to increase improve
- [01:09:53.790]college and career readiness educational
- [01:09:56.800]attainment and community and economic
- [01:09:58.720]vitality and growth
- [01:10:00.310]it also supports our end 2025 plan for
- [01:10:03.520]our University and the University and
- [01:10:05.800]luminous goals to improve the number of
- [01:10:09.010]students that have post-secondary
- [01:10:10.740]credentials by the year 2025 so what
- [01:10:13.630]we're looking at is going from 45.8% as
- [01:10:16.600]a national average
- [01:10:17.830]to 60% so we signed this agreement in
- [01:10:21.160]October and I just want to share a
- [01:10:22.630]couple of key partnerships that have
- [01:10:24.760]been developed so far so we've signed a
- [01:10:27.370]partnership agreement with Wayne State
- [01:10:29.350]College to offer the first dueled
- [01:10:31.880]program between non institution and
- [01:10:33.889]Kasner we've developed an articulation
- [01:10:36.170]pathway from associate to baccalaureate
- [01:10:38.659]degree with Nebraska Indian Community
- [01:10:40.969]College the first baccalaureate pathway
- [01:10:43.219]that this institution has in its history
- [01:10:45.620]and then finally we're working with
- [01:10:47.210]North East Community College to
- [01:10:48.800]strengthen our partnership programs and
- [01:10:50.630]develop a reverse transfer model so
- [01:10:53.600]again we're really excited to grow our
- [01:10:55.219]partnership programs in the northeast
- [01:10:57.170]part of the state as we'll expand the
- [01:10:59.420]model to other parts of Nebraska and
- [01:11:01.280]last but not least I want to thank the
- [01:11:03.350]amazing faculty staff and students in

- [01:11:42.620]holistically and are in demand not only
- [01:11:46.550]by our professions but by allied fields
- [01:11:48.949]as well and this is demonstrated by our

- [01:18:46.390]of the College of Business so I'm going
- [01:18:48.730]to share a few highlights from the
- [01:18:50.350]college first two years ago when I
- [01:18:53.290]became the Dean we launched a strategic
- [01:18:54.850]planning process that engaged
- [01:18:57.420]stakeholders from across campus in the
- [01:19:01.000]college and business partners and alums
- [01:19:03.550]through that we rolled out our strategic
- [01:19:05.680]plan about 18 months ago and revisited
- [01:19:08.650]our mission statement our new mission
- [01:19:10.150]statement is together we drive discovery
- [01:19:12.640]create opportunities and empower
- [01:19:14.950]individuals to lead the future of
- [01:19:16.960]business based on that mission we also
- [01:19:20.340]developed and revised guiding principles
- [01:19:23.170]these guiding principles begin with a
- [01:19:25.450]focus on the self and then move to a
- [01:19:27.640]focus on the greater good they start
- [01:19:30.040]with challenging yourself be inclusive
- [01:19:32.470]ask bold questions look to the future
- [01:19:35.590]and make it matter it's so based on
- [01:19:38.110]these this strategic vision as well as
- [01:19:40.840]these guiding principles we set out to
- [01:19:43.240]start executing on our strategic plan we
- [01:19:46.210]began by building on our strengths we
- [01:19:48.400]have consistently had an extremely
- [01:19:50.980]strong undergraduate business program
- [01:19:52.930]that I would remiss be remiss to not
- [01:19:55.240]mention that we've been ranked in the
- [01:19:56.770]top 50 for over four years of business
- [01:19:59.620]programs colleges of business in the big
- [01:20:02.500]ten are some of the best public business
- [01:20:04.990]schools in the country and we didn't
- [01:20:07.060]want to be just big ten ten in name we
- [01:20:10.180]want to be big ten in fact so we're
- [01:20:12.730]building on our existing strengths which
- [01:20:14.830]include our undergraduate programs in
- [01:20:16.870]addition to that at the graduate level
- [01:20:19.060]we have a highly renowned online MBA
- [01:20:21.910]program it is currently ranked 9th in
- [01:20:24.610]poets and quants and 14th and I think
- [01:20:27.820]22nd in US News and World Report I like
- [01:20:30.760]poet and quants the best but anyway so
- [01:20:34.150]we have highly ranked online MBA
- [01:20:36.250]programs and I and specifically we are
- [01:20:39.700]very strong in the online space and we
- [01:20:42.280]plan to continue to leverage that so
- [01:20:44.410]what have we accomplished in the last 18
- [01:20:47.050]months we have built out our online
- [01:20:49.600]graduate programs we launched two new
- [01:20:52.639]specialized masters a master's in
- [01:20:54.769]finance and a master's in business
- [01:20:57.139]analytics as well as certificate
- [01:20:59.090]programs the certificate in human
- [01:21:01.459]resources as well as a joint program
- [01:21:04.010]with the College of Journalism and mass
- [01:21:05.689]communications and business
- [01:21:07.399]communications so we're continuing to
- [01:21:09.889]leverage that strength
- [01:21:11.149]we also are leveraging our undergraduate
- [01:21:13.099]position with a joint program with the
- [01:21:15.530]College of Law we just launched last
- [01:21:17.510]year a law and business minor that we
- [01:21:20.269]plan to grow to a major that's very
- [01:21:22.519]interdisciplinary in nature we are
- [01:21:25.340]leveraging our Clifton strengths
- [01:21:26.869]Institute last summer we trained over 30
- [01:21:30.110]faculty and staff as advanced certified
- [01:21:33.139]strengths coaches and that brought our
- [01:21:35.959]total up to over 40 strengths coaches
- [01:21:38.090]among faculty and staff and we have 80
- [01:21:40.880]strengths coaches that are
- [01:21:42.409]undergraduates that mentor our peers we
- [01:21:45.019]are also one of the colleges that works
- [01:21:47.329]with the alumni is working with the
- [01:21:48.949]Alumni Association to launch the Husker
- [01:21:52.340]connect which is a platform for
- [01:21:54.169]mentoring alums and undergraduate
- [01:21:56.659]students so engagement is an extremely
- [01:21:59.590]important part of our overall goals we
- [01:22:02.780]also following the lead of the College
- [01:22:04.999]of Journalism and mass communication we
- [01:22:07.309]offered our first pop-up class and we're
- [01:22:09.949]continuing to expand in that space as
- [01:22:12.019]well as what we call business plus
- [01:22:13.550]workshops which are skill based
- [01:22:15.590]workshops that give our students the
- [01:22:17.749]ability to learn skills that will help
- [01:22:20.059]make them more marketable in the
- [01:22:21.919]workforce but aren't necessarily
- [01:22:23.599]undergraduate curriculum type skills so
- [01:22:27.380]at the undergraduate and graduate level
- [01:22:29.599]those are some of our accomplishments we
- [01:22:31.399]couldn't do any of this without the help
- [01:22:33.499]of our faculty staff and quite frankly
- [01:22:35.869]the commitment of our students so what's
- [01:22:38.269]coming what's kit what we're continuing
- [01:22:40.729]to build out is our online graduate
- [01:22:42.679]programs we have multiple specialized
- [01:22:46.189]master's degrees that we're getting
- [01:22:47.780]ready to launch certificate programs as
- [01:22:50.119]well as accelerated master's programs
- [01:22:52.519]for our current undergraduate students
- [01:22:54.439]we're also leveraging and creating
- [01:22:57.079]additional programs of excellence as I
- [01:22:59.300]mentioned the business and law minor
- [01:23:01.519]moving to a major but also
- [01:23:04.870]programs in that area of other programs
- [01:23:07.780]as well in terms of engagement and
- [01:23:09.970]connection we're looking at continuing
- [01:23:11.770]to leverage our relationships with our
- [01:23:13.630]corporate partners both from in terms of
- [01:23:16.150]research support but also in terms of
- [01:23:19.690]placement of our students expanding
- [01:23:21.670]internship opportunities and experience
- [01:23:23.950]alerting key component of our strategic
- [01:23:26.260]plan is transformational and
- [01:23:28.450]experiential learning in the engagement
- [01:23:31.330]space we're also looking at talent
- [01:23:33.070]acquisition programs so all of this is
- [01:23:36.010]yet to come
- [01:23:36.820]but we're we're very excited about the
- [01:23:39.460]energy that our strategic plan has
- [01:23:41.290]created and the commitment of our
- [01:23:43.090]faculty staff and students and quite
- [01:23:45.490]frankly the broader alumni community I
- [01:23:47.740]would be remiss to not say that we are
- [01:23:50.410]operating in the currently the most an
- [01:23:53.670]84 million dollar facility that was
- [01:23:56.140]privately funded and I just wanted to
- [01:23:57.760]point out that engineering is 85 so
- [01:23:59.440]we're building a two million dollar
- [01:24:00.690]expansion is privately fun just kidding
- [01:24:04.180]okay
- [01:24:09.370]good afternoon my name is sherry Jones
- [01:24:12.740]Dean of the College of Education and
- [01:24:14.720]Human Sciences it has been an absolute
- [01:24:17.330]pleasure to move into this position this
- [01:24:20.180]past year to lead a college whose work
- [01:24:22.970]impacts the human condition throughout
- [01:24:24.800]the lifespan and I will just say to my
- [01:24:26.960]college they know I'm very mindful of my
- [01:24:29.030]allotted time so I will not be able to
- [01:24:30.920]cover all of our accomplishments but I
- [01:24:33.560]will say on time
- [01:24:35.630]so Ronnie mentioned rankings I do want
- [01:24:38.630]to say that our College is currently the
- [01:24:40.640]highest ranked College on campus and US
- [01:24:42.770]News and World Report we are number 39
- [01:24:44.870]for graduate colleges of education and
- [01:24:47.000]we are making a plan to move to the top
- [01:24:49.120]we celebrated 15 years this last year of
- [01:24:52.670]impactful research on learning and
- [01:24:54.650]development through the Nebraska Center
- [01:24:56.150]for research on children youth families
- [01:24:58.100]in schools we celebrated a phase to 11
- [01:25:01.010]million dollar Cobre grant to continue
- [01:25:02.780]our work on prevention of obesity
- [01:25:04.880]related diseases in teaching we launched
- [01:25:08.660]the teacher scholars Academy and
- [01:25:10.730]partnership with un o and UN K this is a
- [01:25:13.460]scholarship program at UNL our students
- [01:25:16.280]are in a living and learning community
- [01:25:18.070]leadership curriculum experiential
- [01:25:20.900]learning in Nebraska schools and it's my
- [01:25:22.910]hope that our graduates will fill
- [01:25:24.590]Nebraska schools with teacher leaders
- [01:25:26.630]through our partnership with Nebraska
- [01:25:29.060]Extension and 4-h we delivered
- [01:25:32.030]age-appropriate activities to teach
- [01:25:35.450]young children in elementary school
- [01:25:37.340]about healthy eating and the importance
- [01:25:40.010]of physical activity so just a few
- [01:25:42.530]examples of our impactful work this past
- [01:25:44.780]year so what's next for the college we
- [01:25:47.690]are expanding our footprint to a
- [01:25:49.460]building near you and you heard Roni
- [01:25:51.440]talk about a few of these our
- [01:25:54.940]construction new construction
- [01:25:57.040]reconstruction expansion and renovation
- [01:25:59.620]will place us on City campus East Campus
- [01:26:03.200]and innovation campus so we'll be where
- [01:26:05.540]the action is
- [01:26:06.680]these buildings will also enable us to
- [01:26:09.530]enhance experiential learning promote
- [01:26:11.870]and support growth in scholarship and
- [01:26:14.000]interdisciplinary work and prepare a
- [01:26:17.240]workforce for tomorrow's communities and
- [01:26:19.910]enhance our community engagement
- [01:26:22.190]innovative ways but it's not just about
- [01:26:24.560]what happens in the buildings are on the
- [01:26:26.660]campus footprint the college has been
- [01:26:29.420]discussing our collective genius and you
- [01:26:32.180]can move to the next slide and what
- [01:26:34.489]grand visions that we might accomplish
- [01:26:36.590]for Nebraska and beyond and some
- [01:26:39.260]examples of what we've been discussing
- [01:26:40.900]every young child in Nebraska will
- [01:26:43.640]thrive by five and be great by eight all
- [01:26:46.610]inhabitants of Nebraska will have access
- [01:26:49.070]to health and wellness services that are
- [01:26:51.320]well integrated into their communities
- [01:26:53.210]and Nebraska communities will have
- [01:26:55.730]strong schools filled with strong
- [01:26:57.440]leaders and high quality teachers and at
- [01:27:00.260]the center of all of these Grand
- [01:27:01.640]Challenges is our mission to enhance the
- [01:27:03.949]lives of individuals families schools
- [01:27:06.080]and communities and strengthen the
- [01:27:07.760]relationships among them so if we can
- [01:27:10.250]partner with you to make these grand
- [01:27:11.930]visions happen please come and see us
- [01:27:13.760]thank you
- [01:27:20.110]good morning everyone my name is Chuck
- [01:27:22.910]O'Connor I'm the Dean of the Hickson
- [01:27:24.230]League College of Fine and Performing
- [01:27:25.280]Arts and although I'm here this morning
- [01:27:28.520]to talk about some of the highlights of
- [01:27:30.410]our college over the past year and some
- [01:27:32.060]of our goals of course I would be remiss
- [01:27:33.740]and not mentioning the many achievements
- [01:27:35.600]of our faculty and staff and students
- [01:27:37.930]every year and in all ways over 100 over
- [01:27:41.420]1,000 screenings performances exhibits
- [01:27:44.510]and public lectures around the world
- [01:27:47.360]every year so I'm very very grateful for
- [01:27:49.820]them in our College the Hickson League
- [01:27:52.760]College of Fine and Performing Arts and
- [01:27:54.800]everything that we do we seek to create
- [01:27:59.810]a new social vision that that includes
- [01:28:02.330]all of us and we seek partnerships
- [01:28:04.700]across campus that creatively fused the
- [01:28:07.760]Arts with design and media and
- [01:28:10.160]technology as well as with many of the
- [01:28:14.240]cultural traditions that have come down
- [01:28:16.880]to us through the millennia and those
- [01:28:19.310]perspectives that have been marginalized
- [01:28:21.310]historically let me give you a few
- [01:28:24.050]examples of how we do that this year we
- [01:28:26.450]opened the Johnny Carson Center for
- [01:28:28.010]emerging media arts made possible by a
- [01:28:30.290]20 million dollar gift from the Johnny
- [01:28:31.940]Carson foundation it sits in the old
- [01:28:34.670]Nebraska bookstore that many of you
- [01:28:36.860]remember when it was painted when it was
- [01:28:38.900]brick colored now it's kind of dark grey
- [01:28:41.210]and this Center is just amazing and it
- [01:28:45.470]incentivizes really interdisciplinary
- [01:28:47.530]approaches to to storytelling across a
- [01:28:52.400]continuum from live performance to
- [01:28:54.440]virtual reality and augmented reality
- [01:28:56.150]and cinema and the implications of
- [01:28:59.450]artificial intelligence on storytelling
- [01:29:02.920]likewise there were ghosts
- [01:29:06.910]students in the center or really become
- [01:29:09.530]well-versed not only systems in critical
- [01:29:11.510]thinking but coding and entrepreneurship
- [01:29:14.630]as well and they're central to the work
- [01:29:16.850]force of our state it's supported by an
- [01:29:21.890]advisory board for major IT social media
- [01:29:24.470]companies across the country as well as
- [01:29:27.530]nonprofits and government entities in
- [01:29:30.500]addition to the Karstens center of the
- [01:29:31.940]Nebraska
- [01:29:32.510]pretory theater performs in the lead
- [01:29:34.100]center as our state's professional
- [01:29:36.380]theater company and professional theater
- [01:29:37.970]training program and like the Carson
- [01:29:40.070]Center it engages in some of our most
- [01:29:42.410]important challenges in our society
- [01:29:44.510]today finally this year in partnership
- [01:29:48.200]with many people and many other
- [01:29:49.460]institutions across this campus we
- [01:29:51.590]launched we are Nebraska this
- [01:29:54.800]student-led improvised improvisational
- [01:29:56.750]company tells the story of our campus
- [01:29:58.580]through the eyes of its students
- [01:30:01.010]these students are international and
- [01:30:02.990]national conservative and liberal rural
- [01:30:06.170]and urban all races straight gay
- [01:30:10.600]transgender all stories told about our
- [01:30:14.660]campus and what it's like to be a
- [01:30:16.280]student on our campus in these times and
- [01:30:18.980]the values that we share together we
- [01:30:21.740]perform across campus as well as in the
- [01:30:24.170]community on First Fridays and one of
- [01:30:26.780]our major really attenders of our of we
- [01:30:30.800]are Nebraska or the Lincoln is the
- [01:30:32.120]Lincoln Police Department many of the
- [01:30:33.680]members of whom express how important it
- [01:30:36.290]is to their work as police officers to
- [01:30:39.200]empathize and understand the people that
- [01:30:41.300]they're serving our next production will
- [01:30:43.550]be this afternoon a little bit of a plug
- [01:30:45.800]here at 3:30 at Hawks Hall in the
- [01:30:49.040]College of Business a partner of ours we
- [01:30:51.260]will really invite you all to attend
- [01:30:52.640]thank you very very much
- [01:31:00.389]good morning everyone I'm Rick Holloway
- [01:31:02.559]I'm representing the College of
- [01:31:03.789]Journalism and mass communications today
- [01:31:05.590]and as the university celebrated its
- [01:31:07.570]150th anniversary last year our own
- [01:31:10.179]College was celebrating 125 years and
- [01:31:13.719]that was a kind of an interesting
- [01:31:15.429]milestone for us because it was back in
- [01:31:17.559]1894 that will Owen Jones the editor of
- [01:31:20.679]the Nebraska State Journal stepped into
- [01:31:22.869]the classroom for the first time to
- [01:31:24.699]teach students about the importance of
- [01:31:26.260]the First Amendment and freedom of the
- [01:31:27.610]press and among his students was a very
- [01:31:30.969]interested young student and future
- [01:31:32.530]writer named Willa Cather so we're
- [01:31:35.079]excited to have had her in our program
- [01:31:36.989]2019 also marked the 10th anniversary of
- [01:31:39.610]Yad our student-run advertising agency
- [01:31:41.860]the agency provides students with
- [01:31:44.050]innovative opportunities to gain
- [01:31:45.460]real-world experience by working with
- [01:31:47.920]real clients other major milestones in
- [01:31:50.769]2019 the fifth anniversary of the
- [01:31:52.960]MobileMe nu conference which is our
- [01:31:54.820]annual conference that brings together
- [01:31:56.199]students and academics and leading
- [01:31:58.480]industry professionals to examine the
- [01:32:00.250]latest trends and best practices in
- [01:32:02.260]mobile media we saw a growth in both our
- [01:32:04.900]undergraduate and graduate programs in
- [01:32:06.880]2019 including partnerships with the
- [01:32:09.789]College of Business as you heard we
- [01:32:11.409]obtained final approval of a graduate
- [01:32:13.750]certificate in financial communications
- [01:32:15.460]we expanded the pop-up classes as you
- [01:32:18.070]heard we offered 22 of them last year
- [01:32:20.139]and these one-hour classes gave all
- [01:32:22.840]folks across the campus an opportunity
- [01:32:24.849]to dive into emerging industry trends we
- [01:32:27.519]launched a core curriculum across all
- [01:32:29.289]four of our majors that provide students
- [01:32:32.320]with a solid foundation in writing and
- [01:32:34.059]visual communications and law and ethics
- [01:32:36.190]we established a new media production
- [01:32:39.099]option for undergraduate students to
- [01:32:40.869]focus on using digital platforms and
- [01:32:43.360]contemporary media to tell journalistic
- [01:32:45.369]stories we introduced a new capstone
- [01:32:47.650]experience for journalism and
- [01:32:49.090]broadcasting students the news lab which
- [01:32:51.789]incorporates our Nebraska news service
- [01:32:53.860]providing legislative and state
- [01:32:56.199]government news to 120 media outlets
- [01:32:58.449]across the state we launched the Roper
- [01:33:00.820]sports reporter in residence program
- [01:33:03.159]which connects students and our new and
- [01:33:05.260]rapidly growing sports media
- [01:33:07.059]communication major to professionals
- [01:33:08.889]working in the field and we continue to
- [01:33:11.079]do some more
- [01:33:11.710]winning work in our College our students
- [01:33:13.540]took home sixth place nationally in the
- [01:33:16.000]Hearst intercollegiate journalism awards
- [01:33:17.890]in first place in the public relations
- [01:33:20.230]student Society of America national
- [01:33:22.060]organ donor awareness competition for a
- [01:33:24.670]hundred and twenty five years our
- [01:33:26.200]faculty have worked to instill the First
- [01:33:28.930]Amendment values in our students and our
- [01:33:30.880]communities in our state in 2020 we're
- [01:33:33.700]excited to welcome our new dean to the
- [01:33:35.200]College as you heard dr. sherri vale who
- [01:33:37.690]will join us in mid-summer and we look
- [01:33:39.670]forward to working with her to chart the
- [01:33:41.469]next 125 years thank you good morning
- [01:33:50.980]I'm Richard Moberly and I'm the soon to
- [01:33:52.870]be back as Dean at the College of Law
- [01:33:56.110]I'd like to use our mission statement
- [01:33:58.180]for phrases from our mission statement
- [01:34:00.250]to give you a few quick snapshots of the
- [01:34:02.080]College of Law this year and we wrote
- [01:34:04.330]this mission statement as a community
- [01:34:06.130]this year and we think it describes us
- [01:34:08.590]on our best days but actually inspires
- [01:34:10.420]us for what we're going to become in the
- [01:34:12.670]future the first phrase is that we
- [01:34:14.950]develop inclusive leaders and and that's
- [01:34:18.370]really important for us because lawyers
- [01:34:19.600]people with law degrees we know lead
- [01:34:21.610]their clients every day through some of
- [01:34:23.860]the most difficult times in their lives
- [01:34:25.330]but they also lead corporations and
- [01:34:27.730]businesses and governments nonprofit
- [01:34:30.280]entities universities their leaders in
- [01:34:32.770]their communities and when we think
- [01:34:34.540]about leaders at the law school today we
- [01:34:36.520]want people to be inclusive leaders to
- [01:34:38.860]bring everyone to the table so we can
- [01:34:40.390]hear a lot of different perspectives and
- [01:34:42.219]when I think about a great example of an
- [01:34:44.590]inclusive leader I know she's been
- [01:34:46.330]mentioned today but I'm going to call
- [01:34:47.500]her out again and that's acting Dean and
- [01:34:49.630]a shaper she's in the back if you could
- [01:34:51.130]please wave
- [01:34:54.320][Music]
- [01:34:56.340]just if you know her you know what a
- [01:34:59.590]tremendous individual she is she's also
- [01:35:01.330]an amazing leader she's led to college
- [01:35:03.429]this last year on a college wide
- [01:35:04.870]discussion on many different
- [01:35:06.610]perspectives on immigration she has led
- [01:35:09.730]our faculty on discussions of inclusive
- [01:35:11.679]pedagogy she won the Chancellor's
- [01:35:13.570]fulfilling the dream award thank you for
- [01:35:15.969]your service this year and throughout
- [01:35:17.320]your career Dean shavers we really
- [01:35:19.030]appreciate you we have it we have a next
- [01:35:24.219]generation of leaders that are coming we
- [01:35:25.929]have pipeline programs at four colleges
- [01:35:27.790]and universities across the state and
- [01:35:30.580]they're students who are from rural
- [01:35:32.920]areas or they're bilingual or they're
- [01:35:34.780]first generation and they want to come
- [01:35:36.580]to law school and after law school and
- [01:35:38.140]they're gonna come to Nebraska law and
- [01:35:39.550]after they're done they're gonna go back
- [01:35:40.960]out to greater Nebraska and solve a real
- [01:35:43.179]need for lawyers and many of our
- [01:35:45.820]communities and also work in the public
- [01:35:47.500]interest so I'm proud that we're gonna
- [01:35:49.150]welcome 55 of them over the next few
- [01:35:51.580]years coming to the College of Law we're
- [01:35:54.580]at our best when we advance justice at
- [01:35:57.130]the College of Law the woman on your
- [01:35:59.350]left is Professor Jessica shoemaker
- [01:36:01.449]spent the last year as a Fulbright
- [01:36:02.830]Scholar in Canada study on working on
- [01:36:05.739]indigenous populations rights she's
- [01:36:08.020]bringing that scholarship back to
- [01:36:09.760]Nebraska and she's working with Native
- [01:36:11.410]American communities to use property law
- [01:36:14.110]to address poverty issues on
- [01:36:15.640]reservations we also have a partnership
- [01:36:18.010]with the center for children families in
- [01:36:19.960]the law led by Professor Michele Paxton
- [01:36:22.270]who is literally changing the way
- [01:36:24.160]children are being represented in
- [01:36:25.750]Lancaster County for the better and
- [01:36:27.340]across the state of Nebraska and we're
- [01:36:29.199]very proud of the work that she and our
- [01:36:30.969]students are doing when we think about
- [01:36:33.610]solving vital societal problems I have
- [01:36:37.330]my band member up there on the left is
- [01:36:39.310]Gus Hurwitz he's got a backup band
- [01:36:41.500]that's coming soon I think with that
- [01:36:43.510]picture but I love but last Friday the
- [01:36:47.170]Board of Regents passed the center for
- [01:36:49.690]the Nebraska governance and Technology
- [01:36:52.120]Center which with our partners at the
- [01:36:53.530]College of Business and College of
- [01:36:54.790]Engineering I was going to transform the
- [01:36:56.860]way we think about innovative
- [01:36:58.090]technologies and their impact on society
- [01:37:00.780]professor Jack beard is leading an
- [01:37:03.250]international cohort to literally write
- [01:37:05.770]the rules
- [01:37:06.560]for military engagement in space and if
- [01:37:09.110]you don't think that's important then
- [01:37:10.400]take out your phone and think what would
- [01:37:12.020]we do without satellites and he and this
- [01:37:14.450]we're one of four institutions across
- [01:37:16.340]the globe that are working on that
- [01:37:17.900]projects going to make a huge impact in
- [01:37:19.760]the world in the future and then I think
- [01:37:22.670]about our students who serve with
- [01:37:24.740]integrity and our students perform
- [01:37:27.820]thousands of hours every year of free
- [01:37:30.440]legal work for people in need in fact
- [01:37:33.560]the American Bar Association recently
- [01:37:36.200]awarded us for the second year in a row
- [01:37:37.730]the only law school to receive pro bono
- [01:37:40.340]award and I'm incredibly proud of
- [01:37:42.080]professor Ryan Sullivan and the work
- [01:37:43.790]that all those students do to really
- [01:37:46.340]provide legal services for people who
- [01:37:48.860]need it so those are four quick
- [01:37:51.470]snapshots of the types of things we're
- [01:37:53.990]trying to do in our mission I'll leave
- [01:37:55.250]you since everyone else talked about
- [01:37:56.450]metrics I'll leave you with a couple of
- [01:37:58.280]numbers to think about there's 200 law
- [01:38:00.950]schools in the country one of the most
- [01:38:03.260]important things for our students when
- [01:38:04.520]they graduate stup ass the bar exam to
- [01:38:06.560]be able to come lawyers over the last
- [01:38:08.600]two years our students have had the 11th
- [01:38:11.630]highest bar exam passage rate in the
- [01:38:14.360]country 1 ahead of what I call the
- [01:38:16.910]Nebraska of the East Harvard Law School
- [01:38:19.030]and so I'm really proud of what they're
- [01:38:22.070]doing they get jobs at a rate that's the
- [01:38:24.980]sixth highest in the country and guess
- [01:38:26.960]what gang they do it all for the 4th
- [01:38:29.270]lowest debt load when they leave it's a
- [01:38:31.700]tremendous ability for them to just
- [01:38:33.950]creates all sorts of opportunities for
- [01:38:35.480]them external people are starting to
- [01:38:37.490]notice we're excited about being ranked
- [01:38:39.410]number 36 you talk about favorite
- [01:38:40.880]rankings and that's my favorite I like
- [01:38:42.770]them better than US News and and then we
- [01:38:46.610]also were the the fifth best value in
- [01:38:49.070]the country so we're really happy with
- [01:38:51.080]where we are and where we've been but
- [01:38:52.640]even more excited about where we're
- [01:38:54.080]going
- [01:38:54.470]Thanks
- [01:38:55.430][Applause]
- [01:38:56.160][Music]
- [01:39:01.570]okay we're almost done you like how they
- [01:39:04.390]make the new kid go last I'm Claire
- [01:39:07.960]Stewart I'm really delighted to be here
- [01:39:09.610]I'm the Dean of libraries I would like
- [01:39:12.040]to talk just very quickly mostly I want
- [01:39:14.170]to talk about what's coming but share
- [01:39:16.150]with you just three highlights from the
- [01:39:18.280]past year the first is we hired a new
- [01:39:19.630]dean I'm I'm really happy to be here and
- [01:39:23.470]so thankful to be working with such an
- [01:39:25.750]outstanding community second I wanted to
- [01:39:28.510]share that late in 2019 we had 70
- [01:39:31.780]million downloads from the University of
- [01:39:34.180]Nebraska digital Commons that's the
- [01:39:36.550]institutional repository that the
- [01:39:38.260]libraries runs that brings Nebraska
- [01:39:40.540]research freely to everyone around the
- [01:39:43.210]world it's actually the third largest
- [01:39:45.670]repository in the country but it is the
- [01:39:48.940]most heavily trafficked repository in
- [01:39:51.460]the country it's 9 million downloads
- [01:39:53.530]ahead of its next closest follower which
- [01:39:56.440]is the University of California e
- [01:39:57.910]scholarship repository so it's a
- [01:40:00.130]tremendous achievement and I think it
- [01:40:01.660]shows what a hunger the citizens of the
- [01:40:04.450]world have for the research that we do
- [01:40:06.250]here at Nebraska this the third thing I
- [01:40:09.670]want to share is Chancellor green
- [01:40:11.110]already talked about Cory could you give
- [01:40:12.880]me three clicks please which is last
- [01:40:16.420]year we had the opportunity to begin the
- [01:40:18.940]transformation of the cy Thompson
- [01:40:21.910]library and to create the Dinsdale
- [01:40:23.620]Family Learning Commons and this is
- [01:40:25.900]another amazing opportunity that we have
- [01:40:28.120]as a community to think about the the
- [01:40:31.090]library as a laboratory and and how we
- [01:40:33.640]can advance student success how we can
- [01:40:36.820]accelerate research and how we can
- [01:40:38.830]engage with the community so we have an
- [01:40:42.010]incredible opportunity here in
- [01:40:43.570]collaboration with our partners at INR
- [01:40:45.820]and everyone on East Campus to reimagine
- [01:40:48.490]the space and it's a laboratory in a
- [01:40:50.650]very literal sense as well our faculty
- [01:40:53.500]in the libraries collaborate with
- [01:40:54.850]architecture faculty and you care
- [01:40:56.890]students to study how informal learning
- [01:40:59.650]happens in spaces like the library and
- [01:41:01.900]just yesterday actually had an email
- [01:41:04.060]from a college of business student who
- [01:41:05.830]wants to do a project with our
- [01:41:07.030]entrepreneurship class in our library so
- [01:41:09.580]we're very proud to have these
- [01:41:10.780]opportunities to offer students
- [01:41:12.750]exceptional learning experiences next
- [01:41:16.240]slide please
- [01:41:16.950]and increasingly our future success
- [01:41:19.450]depends on us being aggressively
- [01:41:21.670]collaborative we all know we cannot do
- [01:41:23.830]the work that we do individually in our
- [01:41:26.260]field library science we've started to
- [01:41:28.270]talk about radical collaboration I
- [01:41:30.690]really love this slide because I think
- [01:41:32.950]it's a way of looking at this tremendous
- [01:41:35.370]the the print collections that we hold
- [01:41:38.320]in in North America and if you take away
- [01:41:40.900]state and institutional boundaries and
- [01:41:43.060]you look at them differently what you
- [01:41:44.410]see are these mega regions emerging and
- [01:41:47.530]it's it puts Nebraska in a really
- [01:41:49.810]interesting place I think a very pivotal
- [01:41:51.820]place a connecting point for our print
- [01:41:55.840]collections across our country and I'm
- [01:41:58.060]very proud that the libraries of the Big
- [01:42:00.580]Ten are taking this radical
- [01:42:03.040]collaboration idea to heart and trying
- [01:42:05.800]to think very differently not only about
- [01:42:07.690]how we safeguard and preserve that very
- [01:42:10.780]precious cultural and literary history
- [01:42:13.150]but how we use it to advance the
- [01:42:15.790]problems and solve the problems that we
- [01:42:17.590]are all trying to serve solve
- [01:42:19.480]collectively next slide please so I'm
- [01:42:23.230]gonna wrap up and just share with you
- [01:42:26.320]one of the questions that really
- [01:42:28.120]motivates us in the libraries when we
- [01:42:30.850]think about our role and the obligation
- [01:42:33.190]that we have to build a more open
- [01:42:35.230]equitable and sustainable information
- [01:42:37.870]ecosystem that also means that we have
- [01:42:40.480]to give our students the information
- [01:42:43.000]skills that they need in their
- [01:42:44.740]disciplines to be successful we have to
- [01:42:47.200]give them a competitive advantage so
- [01:42:49.390]that when that history student graduates
- [01:42:52.360]and goes to work at a Nebraska tech
- [01:42:55.180]startup or that business student goes to
- [01:42:58.390]work at a non-for-profit in in Lincoln
- [01:43:00.880]and their boss comes to them on their
- [01:43:02.590]first day and says I need you to do
- [01:43:04.240]research I need you to go find and
- [01:43:06.190]analyze this data I need you to find
- [01:43:08.410]company financials for companies a B and
- [01:43:11.170]C we want to be confident in the
- [01:43:13.450]libraries that we've done our part to
- [01:43:15.160]give those students the information
- [01:43:16.720]skills that they need we have real
- [01:43:19.780]problems I think in our world with
- [01:43:21.400]information justice there are stories
- [01:43:23.980]that we need to tell voices that we have
- [01:43:26.280]heard that have been silenced and the
- [01:43:28.020]libraries we believe have a huge role to
- [01:43:30.000]play in addressing all of those things
- [01:43:32.480]so I am going to stop so that we can
- [01:43:35.850]move on to Q&A thank you very much so I
- [01:43:46.260]think you can begin to understand why I
- [01:43:48.990]said what I said earlier about us being
- [01:43:51.930]positioned with academic leadership that
- [01:43:54.360]is amongst the best in the country thank
- [01:43:56.250]all of our Dean's for their for their
- [01:43:58.710]leadership and we are standing between
- [01:44:04.860]you and lunch behind us so we're going
- [01:44:07.530]to keep it quick here at the end we are
- [01:44:10.110]going to establish this as part of our
- [01:44:12.270]state of the university tradition and
- [01:44:14.340]have the deans and the leadership is
- [01:44:16.710]part of that conversation including
- [01:44:18.710]making it a time-honored way to report
- [01:44:21.210]10 20 25 so just so you know so we're
- [01:44:24.720]looking forward to that now we did have
- [01:44:26.850]the opportunity for people to send in
- [01:44:29.610]questions that we might want to have
- [01:44:31.500]some dialogue around and I've got a few
- [01:44:33.270]that we're going to work through pretty
- [01:44:35.310]quickly here to end this morning and get
- [01:44:38.580]ready some of you are going to get them
- [01:44:40.110]just to forewarn you first one is can
- [01:44:44.370]you explain what it means to be a
- [01:44:46.620]Carnegie community engagement campus and
- [01:44:50.340]I'm gonna hand the mic to Bob Wilhelm as
- [01:44:55.770]a research university we're as
- [01:44:57.210]designated is by the Carnegie Foundation
- [01:44:59.100]as an r1 the the very highest research
- [01:45:02.880]productivity university with respect to
- [01:45:05.640]the United States there's another
- [01:45:07.290]designation that the Carnegie Foundation
- [01:45:08.880]makes they describe they've defined a
- [01:45:11.790]rubric that describes the best
- [01:45:13.710]characteristics of universities that do
- [01:45:15.540]the best at being connected connecting
- [01:45:18.720]their academic and their research
- [01:45:20.400]missions with the community around them
- [01:45:22.620]and beyond them many of these things we
- [01:45:25.470]already do in some cases will have to be
- [01:45:27.990]more organized in other in other cases
- [01:45:31.050]will will need to make bigger
- [01:45:32.790]investments and I can tell you more
- [01:45:34.770]about it at lunch
- [01:45:38.619]thanks Bob that was Bob wilheimer vice
- [01:45:41.119]chancellor for research and economic
- [01:45:42.380]development second question is you've
- [01:45:45.199]spoken about lifelong learning what is
- [01:45:47.840]your vision of its importance and what
- [01:45:50.389]it should look like in the future and
- [01:45:51.769]because she did it so well in her
- [01:45:53.209]presentation I'm gonna hand the mic to
- [01:45:54.739]Sherry Jones okay so I can think of two
- [01:46:02.479]things to say about lifelong learning
- [01:46:03.829]just really quick so one Roni mentioned
- [01:46:07.070]that the jobs of the future have not
- [01:46:08.659]been created yet so if we do not create
- [01:46:10.579]lifelong learners they won't be ready to
- [01:46:13.340]move into whatever those new jobs might
- [01:46:15.739]be so I can think of two things one
- [01:46:17.630]right now we have an opportunity with
- [01:46:19.219]our own students to instill in them the
- [01:46:22.579]spirit of lifelong learning what that
- [01:46:24.559]looks like how they should think about
- [01:46:26.059]that how they can engage in that so when
- [01:46:28.219]they leave us we're confident that they
- [01:46:30.439]will be lifelong learners the second
- [01:46:33.019]piece is about engaging with ourselves
- [01:46:35.749]and our communities and other partners
- [01:46:38.479]that we work with so can we leverage
- [01:46:40.639]systems that would enable those
- [01:46:42.800]individuals to come and be a part of
- [01:46:45.559]what we do with our own students and
- [01:46:47.090]ourselves so for example the college
- [01:46:49.639]houses the iCIJ or Lifelong Learning
- [01:46:51.559]Institute and perhaps this might be a
- [01:46:53.659]mechanism for our merit as they leave us
- [01:46:57.079]our community partners to continue to
- [01:47:01.039]advance their own knowledge but also
- [01:47:02.800]utilize that mechanism to create a
- [01:47:05.239]continuum from students to Ameri tie to
- [01:47:08.840]community members who are part of that
- [01:47:10.579]Institute perhaps so one thing that
- [01:47:12.709]comes to mind thanks sherry and one more
- [01:47:16.639]this one's gonna go to Mike be my vice
- [01:47:18.679]chancellor for the Institute of Agra
- [01:47:20.150]Natural Resources and the question is
- [01:47:23.059]what are we doing to feed a hungry world
- [01:47:25.039]under a changing climate you heard that
- [01:47:27.530]a couple of times in the presentation
- [01:47:29.929]this morning Wow small question we're
- [01:47:36.800]gonna eat lunch here momentarily
- [01:47:39.970]you know just I think every day we wake
- [01:47:43.130]up and think about the growing world
- [01:47:45.560]that we live in you've all heard the
- [01:47:47.330]statistics from roughly seven and a half
- [01:47:49.760]billion people on the planet today too
- [01:47:52.550]near ten billion people in the year 2050
- [01:47:56.150]and they need to eat and you can't eat
- [01:48:00.290]without clean water so we think a lot
- [01:48:02.480]about water resources Nebraska is famous
- [01:48:05.330]for that sitting on top of the Ogallala
- [01:48:07.220]Aquifer of course and with 80,000 miles
- [01:48:10.250]of streams and rivers but for for
- [01:48:13.580]reaching out across the world through
- [01:48:15.500]the Daugherty water for food Global
- [01:48:17.030]Institute for example so thinking about
- [01:48:19.370]food production fuel feed and fiber
- [01:48:21.560]production thinking about how to produce
- [01:48:23.750]that food for a growing world being
- [01:48:26.360]mindful of the resilience of our water
- [01:48:28.220]our air our soils and perhaps most
- [01:48:31.730]importantly really thinking about people
- [01:48:34.340]and the people that produce that food
- [01:48:35.870]whether it's large-scale agriculture
- [01:48:38.090]like here in Nebraska or small-scale
- [01:48:40.610]land holders in sub-saharan Africa we
- [01:48:44.180]have a responsibility to work with
- [01:48:45.920]people where they are in their local
- [01:48:48.230]communities to better their life and
- [01:48:51.070]that's what the University of Nebraska
- [01:48:53.570]is all about proud to be here I hope
- [01:48:55.730]that answered the question
- [01:49:03.320]I should tell you those folks didn't
- [01:49:05.360]know that we're gonna get those
- [01:49:06.260]questions it's a great job on the spot
- [01:49:09.139]on answering them I hope that you get
- [01:49:11.659]the sense from the state of our
- [01:49:14.030]University this morning of the
- [01:49:16.099]phenomenal police this institution is
- [01:49:18.650]that of the phenomenal work that we do
- [01:49:21.800]here of the importance of that work and
- [01:49:24.469]what we do here as the people's land
- [01:49:26.900]grant University it's a good time to be
- [01:49:28.849]in Nebraska it's a good time to be at
- [01:49:30.889]the University of Nebraska enjoy lunch
- [01:49:33.530]in our birthday cake today for a hundred
- [01:49:37.159]and fifty first birthday behind us in
- [01:49:39.230]the room up at the top I would draw your
- [01:49:41.810]attention while you're there we have two
- [01:49:44.780]things that are being exhibited third
- [01:49:47.150]during lunch one is the time capsule
- [01:49:49.610]that the Nebraska Alumni Association is
- [01:49:51.800]putting down for the hundred and seventy
- [01:49:54.349]fifth anniversary twenty five years from
- [01:49:57.230]now so take a look at that and then also
- [01:49:59.750]you'll remember at the beginning of the
- [01:50:01.579]N 150 year last year we talked about
- [01:50:03.770]University Hall and being able to take
- [01:50:06.949]the the scale model of University Hall
- [01:50:09.560]the first building on our campus and
- [01:50:11.270]learn about it okay Logan Peters they
- [01:50:13.699]have a great in 150 lecture about that
- [01:50:15.710]this past year they now have the virtual
- [01:50:18.590]reality tour done so you're able to see
- [01:50:21.920]that and experience that I actually went
- [01:50:23.570]and did it myself at any tea a few days
- [01:50:25.520]ago it's really cool that is also there
- [01:50:27.739]for you so thanks for being here this
- [01:50:29.090]morning and it's a great time to be at
- [01:50:31.099]Nebraska
- [01:50:31.820][Applause]
