- [00:00:11.180]Thanks for coming this morning.
- [00:00:14.000]We had to turn people away.
- [00:00:15.220]So, that's a good thing.
- [00:00:17.370]And my name is Gary Lesoing.
- [00:00:18.900]I'm an Extension Educator down in Nemaha County.
- [00:00:22.170]And many of you may not know
- [00:00:24.210]that we actually have a organic project going on here.
- [00:00:28.000]Well I worked up here for many years,
- [00:00:30.030]several years ago back in 1975.
- [00:00:33.150]Warren Sauz, who was the Director then,
- [00:00:34.900]he started this experiment.
- [00:00:36.830]It's actually still going,
- [00:00:38.460]doing some research comparing organic.
- [00:00:41.670]It's changed somewhat as far as the rotations and that.
- [00:00:44.276]But, about three miles northeast of here
- [00:00:48.270]are some plots there.
- [00:00:49.360]They're like a long-term rotation.
- [00:00:51.290]And they're still going.
- [00:00:52.123]And then in the '80s and 90's,
- [00:00:53.540]it was across the road in the forestry section,
- [00:00:55.980]they had some organic small farms
- [00:00:59.340]that students worked on and that.
- [00:01:01.730]So, there has been some of this research going on.
- [00:01:03.620]Keith wanted to do this
- [00:01:05.260]a year ago, or last summer,
- [00:01:07.230]but it just didn't work out with everything.
- [00:01:09.850]And so we're got a good program for you and everything.
- [00:01:17.730]We're going to start off with,
- [00:01:18.820]and I should say,
- [00:01:20.010]out in the hall on the corner there's a bunch of materials.
- [00:01:23.910]Some things on organic certification
- [00:01:26.120]that the university put out.
- [00:01:27.880]And then, also, some information on SARE.
- [00:01:30.970]SARE's a big sponsor
- [00:01:33.120]that's Sustainable Ag Research and Education.
- [00:01:36.160]They actually have Farmer Rancher Grants,
- [00:01:37.840]where you can get, well,
- [00:01:39.490]if a group of like three farmers got together,
- [00:01:41.500]they could get up to $27,000 to do on a project.
- [00:01:46.230]And there's also Partnership Grant,
- [00:01:47.930]where if you wanted to work like with Keith,
- [00:01:50.670]or Extension Educator,
- [00:01:52.260]or somebody from the Co-op even,
- [00:01:55.210]or whatever, you could do on farm research.
- [00:01:58.180]And get up to $40,000 if they're like
- [00:02:00.370]three farmers that wanted to do that.
- [00:02:01.880]So there are programs.
- [00:02:04.110]And SARE's providing the support for this today.
- [00:02:07.400]And I'm actually the Coordinator
- [00:02:08.650]for the state of Nebraska.
