- [00:00:00.000](guitar music)
- [00:00:01.010]Greg Sharpe back at our Husker's Sports Network City.
- [00:00:02.940]It's halftime at the Huskers match up
- [00:00:04.300]with the Iowa Hawkeyes.
- [00:00:05.310]I'm delighted to be joined by the Chancellor
- [00:00:06.690]of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:08.950]Life on the road, the Big Ten, has been so tough this year.
- [00:00:12.280]Home court advantage is great for us at PBA,
- [00:00:14.300]but it has been hard to win on the road.
- [00:00:16.390]It has been.
- [00:00:17.223]Of course, this team is growing and learning
- [00:00:19.420]and I think Coach Hoiberg has talked a lot about
- [00:00:22.830]the whole objective this year is growth in the team
- [00:00:27.330]and a different style of play,
- [00:00:29.120]and I think people are enjoying watching
- [00:00:31.470]that new style of play and seeing that emerge
- [00:00:34.450]and, ya know, looking forward to a great night here,
- [00:00:36.869]hopefully in that curve for our mens' basketball team.
- [00:00:40.750]People are really encouraged and excited for that.
- [00:00:42.420]They're also excited 'cause Valentine's Day
- [00:00:44.610]is about a week away.
- [00:00:45.670]People making some plans for that,
- [00:00:47.240]but you've got some big plans for February 14th.
- [00:00:50.350]Tell us about this.
- [00:00:51.500]Well, ya know, Greg, we started last year
- [00:00:54.670]when we were going through the whole 150th anniversary
- [00:00:59.020]for the university of kind of tying back
- [00:01:02.000]our annual checkup day,
- [00:01:03.760]as I like to think of it, to our anniversary date,
- [00:01:07.240]to our birthday date for the university,
- [00:01:09.560]which happens to be February the 15th.
- [00:01:12.645]It'll be our 151st anniversary this year,
- [00:01:15.120]and so we've moved what we call
- [00:01:18.060]the state of our university
- [00:01:19.780]annual kind of address and assessment
- [00:01:21.680]of where we find ourselves
- [00:01:23.170]as a university to that week.
- [00:01:25.300]So on weeks where February 15th's a weekday,
- [00:01:28.630]we'll do it on February 15th on our charter day.
- [00:01:31.030]This year, that happens to be the day
- [00:01:32.630]after Valentine's Day and is a Saturday.
- [00:01:34.801]So Valentine's Day gets that honor this year,
- [00:01:39.470]and we'll be having our
- [00:01:40.750]state of our university address that morning.
- [00:01:43.730]So coming up next Friday, we're looking forward
- [00:01:46.100]to an opportunity to talk about
- [00:01:48.530]the momentum of the university,
- [00:01:50.500]where we find ourselves from the past year
- [00:01:54.310]across all three of our mission areas.
- [00:01:57.230]And we also are going to be talking about
- [00:02:00.400]the launch of our N2025 strategic plan.
- [00:02:04.870]We've been working on that for the best part
- [00:02:07.240]of this last year.
- [00:02:08.940]The year before that, we worked on the N150 vision.
- [00:02:12.870]It was a longer range 25-year kind of vision
- [00:02:15.930]for the university.
- [00:02:16.830]It was part of our 150th anniversary year.
- [00:02:20.230]So we're launching the first five-year plan
- [00:02:22.770]of that vision, and we'll speak to that,
- [00:02:26.380]both in terms of the student experience at Nebraska,
- [00:02:29.940]and how we're envisioning
- [00:02:31.450]that student experience to develop.
- [00:02:34.470]Very heavily focused around the incorporation
- [00:02:37.680]of experiential learning into that student experience
- [00:02:41.640]over the next five years.
- [00:02:43.394]Things like where every one of our graduates
- [00:02:46.700]and their portfolio by 2025 will have
- [00:02:50.770]direct internship experience
- [00:02:53.270]direct experience in solving
- [00:02:55.430]a community problem in Nebraska,
- [00:02:57.890]direct research experience with our faculty,
- [00:03:00.590]and direct international engagement and experience.
- [00:03:03.780]And we're very excited about that.
- [00:03:06.096]We think we will be the only institution
- [00:03:09.040]in the Big Ten for that to be the case for our graduates,
- [00:03:12.990]and excited about that and our plan
- [00:03:14.620]along with growth with our research enterprise,
- [00:03:16.670]growth of our faculty and staff,
- [00:03:18.530]and growth of our engagement with the state of Nebraska.
- [00:03:21.780]So excited about next Friday and having that conversation
- [00:03:25.990]about where we are as a university and where we're headed
- [00:03:28.760]with the N2025 plan.
- [00:03:30.675]Fantastic.
- [00:03:31.670]We know Nebraska's a special place,
- [00:03:33.250]and one thing that's really unique about this
- [00:03:35.150]is that we have an athletic department
- [00:03:36.440]that runs in the black, which allows them some extra money
- [00:03:39.470]to give back to the university.
- [00:03:41.010]That seems pretty rare to me.
- [00:03:42.620]Well, ya know, we all know Husker Athletics
- [00:03:45.260]is a big deal nationally,
- [00:03:47.610]certainly a big deal in Nebraska and to our university
- [00:03:50.387]and the legacy that it has in education here in the state,
- [00:03:55.160]and, ya know, this past year over $130 million budget
- [00:03:59.240]in Husker Athletics.
- [00:04:01.530]So it is a big budget, but it's a very successful budget,
- [00:04:06.900]where we are one of a handful
- [00:04:09.620]of NCAA Division I Athletic Programs in the country
- [00:04:14.070]that operates in the black,
- [00:04:16.050]where, ya know, we spend less than we bring in,
- [00:04:19.470]which is always the way Nebraskans like
- [00:04:21.680]to think about life, right,
- [00:04:23.340]and I like to think about life.
- [00:04:25.870]And so that in of itself is a real accomplishment
- [00:04:29.400]and no subsidization of athletics by students
- [00:04:33.080]at the university or by the state of Nebraska
- [00:04:35.550]or by funds that are put into athletics.
- [00:04:37.640]It's totally self-supporting.
- [00:04:39.550]It supports all of our over 600 student athletes
- [00:04:43.260]across all of those sports,
- [00:04:45.520]all of the operations of the athletics department
- [00:04:48.290]and then still has money that is left at the end of the day
- [00:04:51.950]that comes back to the university,
- [00:04:54.930]where this past year, over $10 million in support
- [00:04:59.810]directly back to the academic enterprise of the university
- [00:05:03.630]in cash support.
- [00:05:06.368]So $5 million in a new Huskers' scholars athletics program--
- [00:05:10.480]or athletics scholarships for nonstudent athletes,
- [00:05:14.320]for general students at the university,
- [00:05:16.410]Nebraska resident students,
- [00:05:18.900]who are benefiting from those over 3,000 scholarships
- [00:05:23.140]that come out of that support from Husker Athletics
- [00:05:25.830]and an additional set of funds that support recruiting,
- [00:05:29.470]support admissions, support communications
- [00:05:32.450]across the university that's so important to us.
- [00:05:35.060]And that's just the cash amount.
- [00:05:38.270]There's about another over $15 million dollars
- [00:05:41.100]in direct tuition, scholarship support
- [00:05:44.735]for our student athletes that come to the university
- [00:05:47.990]as well as contracts and services the university provides
- [00:05:52.440]for Husker Athletics.
- [00:05:53.780]So we feel very, very fortunate or very proud
- [00:05:57.810]of the fact that across the NCAA, we're looked at
- [00:06:01.500]as the bellwether of the way to run an athletics program
- [00:06:05.850]and do that with sound fiscal integrity
- [00:06:09.010]and no support from the institution or the state.
- [00:06:12.900]So very, very proud of that.
- [00:06:14.650]I was at the NCAA last week, at the convention,
- [00:06:18.120]and it's kind of a nice feeling to kind of
- [00:06:20.130]puff your chest out a little bit with that N on it,
- [00:06:22.726]and people recognize that for the history
- [00:06:26.620]here at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:06:28.320]Something for all of us to be proud of.
- [00:06:29.858]Good to see ya.
- [00:06:30.800]Thanks for updating us.
- [00:06:31.800]Yup.
- [00:06:32.633]And look forward to a good outcome here tonight,
- [00:06:35.100]and go Big Red.
- [00:06:36.490]Ronnie Green with us here at halftime.
- [00:06:37.740]And we got more comin' up next.
