- [00:00:10.410]Well, you wanna make a plan early enough
- [00:00:12.960]'cause you wanna give your recommender
- [00:00:14.850]plenty of time to put their thoughts on paper.
- [00:00:17.990]So, probably around September or October.
- [00:00:20.620]Important things.
- [00:00:22.070]When you go into ask that person for a recommendation,
- [00:00:25.430]you wanna ask if they can write you
- [00:00:27.030]a strong letter of recommendation
- [00:00:29.930]and then you wanna be able to give them information
- [00:00:33.150]they need, perhaps, a copy of your current resume or vitae,
- [00:00:38.160]maybe a personal statement if you've got that.
- [00:00:42.080]Then you wanna give them information
- [00:00:44.110]about where to send the letter,
- [00:00:45.690]if there's a link to that, where that should go for that.
- [00:00:49.770]And, most importantly, give them deadlines.
- [00:00:53.910]Now, who should I ask for those letters of recommendation?
- [00:00:58.660]That's a good question.
- [00:01:00.910]You're applying for graduate school so you want
- [00:01:04.640]someone who can speak to your ability
- [00:01:07.460]to handle the rigor of graduate study
- [00:01:10.110]or research position or clinical work.
- [00:01:13.300]So, someone who knows you.
- [00:01:15.710]Also, maybe if you've got a unique skill set,
- [00:01:17.840]someone who could speak to that skill set.
- [00:01:21.000]This is probably not the time to ask
- [00:01:24.133]a person that you've babysat for for a long time
- [00:01:27.160]or a personal friend, or even your pastor.
- [00:01:30.640]Needs to be more of an academic type of recommendation.
- [00:01:34.025](tranquil music)
- [00:01:39.270]UNL requires three letters of recommendation
- [00:01:42.270]and we don't allow any more than those three.
- [00:01:45.041](tranquil music)
- [00:01:50.440]The applicant enters the contact information
- [00:01:53.640]for their letter writer and then the system
- [00:01:56.440]will contact the letter writer and have them send
- [00:02:00.180]their information via email.
- [00:02:03.150]If that person does not send their letter for some reason,
- [00:02:07.200]then the applicant has the ability
- [00:02:09.630]to edit the contact information.
- [00:02:12.027](tranquil music)
- [00:02:17.690]You don't have to but we recommend that you do.
- [00:02:20.670]This allows the letter writer to be completely honest
- [00:02:23.890]and it also signifies that you trust
- [00:02:25.510]what they're writing about you.
