Michael Hebert, associate professor of special education and communication disorders, and Mackenzie Savaiano, assistant professor of practice of special education and communication disorders, are the principal investigators in Project VIEW — Visual Impairments Education in Writing. The four-year, IES-funded study seeks to advance our understanding of writing instruction practices for students with visual impairments (VI) to support their academic success. [00:00:15.880]Visual Impairments Education in Writing.
[00:00:17.810]The goal of the project is to examine
[00:00:20.310]the writing instruction and the teaching practices
[00:00:24.290]of general education teachers who have students
[00:00:26.900]with visual impairments in their classroom
[00:00:28.260]and teachers of students with visual impairments or TBIs.
[00:00:31.340]We really wanna find out how instruction's occurring,
[00:00:33.880]how the instruction might impact a student writing outcomes.
[00:00:36.860]Writing is a very important communication tool.
[00:00:39.470]Students use it to share what they know
[00:00:42.170]and adults use it for writing to communicate
[00:00:44.180]in the workplace and so it's really important
[00:00:46.350]that we provide students with visual impairments
[00:00:48.590]writing instructions so that they can
[00:00:50.240]communicate effectively in writing.
[00:00:51.650]Another reason why this project is important
[00:00:54.330]is because research up to this point
[00:00:56.220]has focused mostly on braille writing
[00:00:58.030]and students with visual impairments using braille.
[00:01:00.230]But we know that there's a lot of students
[00:01:01.960]with visual impairments who use other writing modes.
[00:01:04.527]They write on paper with pens and pencils,
[00:01:06.750]they use computers, they use alternative communication modes
[00:01:10.320]and so this project is gonna look at
[00:01:12.120]that full population of students,
[00:01:13.970]including students who have multiple or severe disabilities
[00:01:17.520]and might not be doing traditional writing.
[00:01:19.600]With Project View we're hoping to explore the collaboration
[00:01:22.600]between the teachers of students with visual impairments
[00:01:25.130]and the classroom teachers.
[00:01:26.490]We're really trying to expand what people's definitions
[00:01:29.130]of writing are and then we hope to be able to see
[00:01:32.220]sort of what practices the teachers use
[00:01:34.810]that might end up in higher student writing outcomes.
[00:01:38.030]So the goal is to determine
[00:01:39.070]whether there are certain teacher factors
[00:01:40.740]that predict student writing outcomes.
[00:01:42.300]Some teachers may be better prepared than others,
[00:01:45.010]they may have a stronger understanding of visual impairments
[00:01:48.950]or they may incorporate certain practices
[00:01:51.690]into their classroom which might inform recommendations
[00:01:54.380]that we have for teachers about their writing instruction.
