[00:00:06.030]with Martin Luther King Day celebrated this week
[00:00:09.310]to celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King Junior
[00:00:12.650]and it's with great thanks that I have
[00:00:15.550]for members of the university community
[00:00:18.120]who have organized this full week
[00:00:20.100]of events celebrating his legacy.
[00:00:23.070]The Chancellor's Fulfilling the Dream Award honors
[00:00:25.690]someone who's contributed to the UNL community
[00:00:28.520]by promoting the goals and vision of Dr. King.
[00:00:33.020]This year's 2020 recipient is Professor Anna Shavers,
[00:00:37.360]Acting Dean of the College of Law.
[00:00:40.200]As Dean Shavers joins Marco Barker at the podium,
[00:00:44.410]let me share some of what her nominator
[00:00:46.810]and our colleague Catherine Wilson in the College of Law
[00:00:50.130]had to say about Anna.
[00:00:52.227]"Professor Shavers is recognized across our campus
[00:00:55.860]for her long-standing commitment to diversity and inclusion.
[00:01:00.420]In addition to her commitment to increasing the diversity
[00:01:03.600]of the faculty and students at Nebraska Law,
[00:01:06.540]she also brings current issues to the attention
[00:01:09.300]of the entire law school community
[00:01:11.500]and supports an active dialogue on these issues
[00:01:14.780]with the law college.
[00:01:16.840]These activities, along with her unselfish devotion
[00:01:20.500]to support students of color over the past 29 years,
[00:01:24.510]demonstrate her commitment to creating opportunity for all
[00:01:28.470]within the legal profession.
[00:01:30.870]Anna co-led the university's N150 Committee on Diversity
[00:01:34.760]as part of the N150 Commission,
[00:01:37.250]helping to chart the course for the university's diversity
[00:01:40.250]and inclusion efforts for the years to come.
[00:01:43.680]She also impacted the university community
[00:01:46.160]with her leadership of a human trafficking conference
[00:01:49.500]hosted by UNL now for the past five years.
[00:01:53.520]This conference is recognized within academia
[00:01:56.390]for its examination of these pressing issues
[00:01:59.360]in our society and certainly inclusive here in Nebraska."
[00:02:03.800]I'm delighted to recognize Anna Shavers as the 2020
[00:02:08.180]Chancellor's Fulfilling the Dream Award recipient.
