- [00:00:00.000]The world is as round as an orange.
- [00:00:05.697]The world is as round as an orange.
- [00:00:10.510]Tell me what you want to come
- [00:00:12.490]out of the warm up exercise.
- [00:00:13.520]So, every time when we warm
- [00:00:14.728]up the big thing is working on articulation,
- [00:00:18.030]so getting like your muscles moving.
- [00:00:19.480]So speech is a competitive student activity,
- [00:00:22.940]but it's all about advocating for ideas you care about
- [00:00:25.604]and doing them in a passionate way so that
- [00:00:28.030]you can compete at the best level.
- [00:00:31.668](upbeat music)
- [00:00:37.743]So much of what we do is getting up and speaking
- [00:00:39.460]in front of other people.
- [00:00:41.160]It's an experience that allows us to feel empowered
- [00:00:43.950]to say what we're thinking, say what we're feeling,
- [00:00:46.870]in a really warm, welcoming, empowering environment.
- [00:00:51.055]So what makes Nebraska a perennial powerhouse
- [00:00:54.820]in speech and debate.
- [00:00:55.653]One is tradition and institutional support.
- [00:00:58.550]It's part of this nearly 150 year tradition.
- [00:01:01.600]Then it's about having great students.
- [00:01:04.150]We're lucky that the high school system in Nebraska,
- [00:01:06.180]as well as our neighboring state where we get students
- [00:01:08.130]from have great competition.
- [00:01:10.350]So we get a draw from these great high school students
- [00:01:13.650]who come in, who have dedication and passion.
- [00:01:15.820]And, then last is the culture we create as coaches
- [00:01:18.510]and students here.
- [00:01:19.820]Where we set our expectations high,
- [00:01:21.800]and we believe that because we believe
- [00:01:23.940]we are among the elite, that we will hold ourselves
- [00:01:26.170]to that standard.
- [00:01:27.360]You know I do a lot of speaking,
- [00:01:28.693]and I have the opportunity to talk to people a lot.
- [00:01:31.710]Could you critique me a little bit
- [00:01:33.380]on this and give me some feedback?
- [00:01:34.914]Of course!
- [00:01:36.390]150 years by any measure
- [00:01:39.070]of the imagination is a long time.
- [00:01:41.640]It spans six generations.
- [00:01:44.420]Great gestures!
- [00:01:45.390]Really, really great gestures!
- [00:01:47.180]You did a really good job of being comfortable
- [00:01:49.590]in explaining something that was very passionate to you.
- [00:01:52.100]Something I noticed I thought you did really well,
- [00:01:53.740]was you had, especially in the beginning, good buzzwords
- [00:01:56.310]that were like really punchy and very vivid.
- [00:01:58.580]But it kind of forced us to listen.
- [00:02:00.520]Okay, I'm feeling better about myself.
- [00:02:02.006](laughter)
- [00:02:03.438]One, two, three, four!
- [00:02:04.509]One, two, three, four!
- [00:02:05.696]One, two, one, two, one, two, one two!
- [00:02:07.667]One, one, one, one!
- [00:02:09.781]Good.
- [00:02:12.120]I was one left every time you were on right.
- [00:02:13.891](laughter)
