- [00:00:12.100]After retiring from teaching started a
- [00:00:18.042]business in the hay market called
- [00:00:20.650]Gatherings. Basically sold antiques,
- [00:00:23.222]new primitive gifts, jewelry. She moved
- [00:00:28.950]locations in the hay market and began
- [00:00:31.260]selling wool for a friend's company in
- [00:00:33.380]her storefront almost 20 years ago.
- [00:00:36.950]Cindy became my first instructor. I'll
- [00:00:42.350]show you my first project at some point.
- [00:00:44.630]It's sitting right over there.
- [00:00:44.072]I broke about 14 embroidery hoops
- [00:00:50.480]because I have a real heavy,
- [00:00:52.290]I guess, punch and those were cheap and I
- [00:00:56.279]was so frustrated. But she said if you
- [00:00:55.423]can just get through your first project
- [00:01:01.248]you will continue to improve. And she was
- [00:01:06.140]right. Judy fell in love with rug hooking
- [00:01:08.359]after completing that first project and
- [00:01:10.900]since starting has completed 30 to 40
- [00:01:13.010]more rugs.
- [00:01:20.439]Loop by loop by loop.
- [00:01:29.040]If people say how long is that going to
- [00:01:31.560]take you? I don't ever keep track of time.
- [00:01:34.380]But see, it's just a good therapeutic, you
- [00:01:37.250]know, a lot of people love knitting,
- [00:01:39.820]crocheting. It's not an inexpensive hobby
- [00:01:44.912]unless you're kind of a scrounger.
- [00:01:47.890]Hitting Goodwill's and things. Looking
- [00:01:50.380]for used clothing. And then you have to
- [00:01:53.480]take them all apart you have to wash
- [00:01:55.330]them. You have to over die. The art of rug
- [00:01:59.050]hooking has come a long way in the last
- [00:02:00.910]20 years. Before if the artist wanted old
- [00:02:04.000]antique primitive colors they had to dye
- [00:02:06.460]the wool. Now, there are multiple
- [00:02:08.140]resources to order wool or fabric by the
- [00:02:10.390]yard. I still like to scrounge around
- [00:02:12.340]though for scrappy pieces because I
- [00:02:14.830]think that just makes your rug look
- [00:02:16.720]older. It gives it a very vintage look. In
- [00:02:20.580]2008 Judy and her husband purchased a
- [00:02:23.440]house property that was surrounded by
- [00:02:25.300]their existing farmland in Milford,
- [00:02:27.070]Nebraska. Judy fell in love with the
- [00:02:29.370]potential the house had for her current
- [00:02:31.270]business. I just promised him that if we
- [00:02:34.239]could buy this five acres I would cook
- [00:02:37.330]him a noon lunch every day for the rest
- [00:02:41.709]of my life. And I have stayed pretty true
- [00:02:44.860]to that except when I leave or every now
- [00:02:47.590]and then when i babysitting commitments
- [00:02:49.989]get in the way. But yeah, and you know
- [00:02:52.216]what? It's been a gift because he just
- [00:02:55.660]told me never to bring any of those
- [00:02:57.459]hookers to our house. And I have not.
- [00:03:00.390]Since purchasing the house, Judy has
- [00:03:03.269]hosted retreats for people to come and
- [00:03:05.410]learn the art of rug hooking from
- [00:03:07.120]instructors that come from around the
- [00:03:08.920]nation. She will continue to do so as
- [00:03:11.290]long as she is able.
