- [00:00:03.600]My name is Shavonna Holman, and I am
- [00:00:05.280]an assistant professor of practice
- [00:00:06.710]in the educational administration department.
- [00:00:09.320]Before coming to UNL, I worked in elementary education
- [00:00:13.210]as a fourth grade teacher, initially.
- [00:00:15.400]I taught fourth grade for six years and then
- [00:00:17.600]I became an assistant principal, and was in that role
- [00:00:20.600]as an assistant principal for seven years
- [00:00:22.620]at three different elementary buildings
- [00:00:24.460]for the Omaha public schools.
- [00:00:26.180]So, in my role as an assistant professor
- [00:00:29.210]of practice, my primary obligations are
- [00:00:31.930]to teach students who are interested
- [00:00:34.160]in pursuing their masters
- [00:00:35.620]in educational administration and leadership,
- [00:00:39.030]and then I'm also the coordinator for the masters
- [00:00:42.070]in educational leadership program, as well.
- [00:00:44.370]So, as a coordinator I take all incoming calls,
- [00:00:47.190]questions, regarding the program,
- [00:00:49.650]what students need to do in order to obtain their degree
- [00:00:52.686]in educational administration, as well as students
- [00:00:55.810]who are seeking their certification in elementary
- [00:00:58.374]or secondary education as an administrator.
- [00:01:01.595]Plan the classes, teach the classes, and just primarily
- [00:01:06.330]help students through their program as they're working
- [00:01:08.520]their way to their degree.
- [00:01:10.840]The best part for me is being able to teach again.
- [00:01:14.040]Teaching has always been my passion,
- [00:01:15.620]and so I initially started
- [00:01:17.860]as a teacher, as I said here earlier, and so being able
- [00:01:21.150]to come back to teaching again and then teaching teachers
- [00:01:24.540]who want to become administrators
- [00:01:26.210]is so exciting, for me, and I just love
- [00:01:28.670]being back with students again.
- [00:01:30.970]My favorite thing about working at UNL is that I am working
- [00:01:34.330]with adults who are also very interested in helping
- [00:01:37.540]the lives of students,
- [00:01:38.530]wanting to become administrators specifically
- [00:01:42.020]in my program.
- [00:01:43.355]I love the people that I work with, and just
- [00:01:46.240]being able to help others.
- [00:01:47.720]Oh, there are lots of things
- [00:01:48.700]that make a successful student.
- [00:01:50.420]One thing that comes to mind is a student
- [00:01:52.630]who actually reads the syllabi. (laughs)
- [00:01:55.550]And make sure that they are doing
- [00:01:57.850]what they're supposed to be doing, as a student.
- [00:01:59.520]I always tell my students that I wouldn't accept anything
- [00:02:03.440]less of you than what you would accept
- [00:02:05.150]from your own students, and so, just make sure
- [00:02:07.290]that you are living up to the expectations
- [00:02:11.210]of your instructor, that you're following
- [00:02:12.650]all the expectations and the guidelines
- [00:02:14.620]that have set forth for you, and just communicate
- [00:02:18.360]with them, and things will be just perfect.
