- [00:00:05.770]Hi, I'm Larry Howard,
- [00:00:06.850]Extension Educator located here in the Cuming County
- [00:00:09.550]extension office in West Point Nebraska.
- [00:00:12.400]This presentation will focus on the content of records
- [00:00:16.120]that need to be kept by producers,
- [00:00:18.250]and animal feeding operations so they can comply
- [00:00:21.240]with the requirements of the NPDES permit,
- [00:00:25.050]as well as the state operating permit here in Nebraska.
- [00:00:28.430]The records will provide regulatory authorities,
- [00:00:31.690]and the public proof of compliance,
- [00:00:33.640]as well as assisting the producer in giving
- [00:00:35.730]nutrient credit to the manure that's being applied.
- [00:00:40.240]In the nutrient management calendar,
- [00:00:42.400]record keeping calendar,
- [00:00:43.370]that Nebraska extension publishes each year,
- [00:00:46.080]we have this overview of our records.
- [00:00:48.580]And you can see from this overview,
- [00:00:49.980]we have a spot that you can
- [00:00:51.260]record the operation identification,
- [00:00:54.520]we have some general directions,
- [00:00:56.630]and some of those general items.
- [00:00:58.370]We want to make sure you record your initials of those
- [00:01:01.140]persons that will be doing the inspections each time.
- [00:01:04.550]If you could look at the bottom here,
- [00:01:05.880]we've got a spot for the name, and then those initials.
- [00:01:08.980]That way when you do the inspection
- [00:01:10.900]you could just do the initials.
- [00:01:12.570]Because the check mark itself would not satisfy
- [00:01:15.800]the record keeping requirement.
- [00:01:17.910]Some of the daily records that we need to keep.
- [00:01:20.540]Make sure that we inspect all of our water lines.
- [00:01:22.940]Both the drinking and the cooling
- [00:01:24.370]that's within that drainage area.
- [00:01:26.560]Record our weather information.
- [00:01:28.960]Any measurable rainfall that occurs at that facility,
- [00:01:32.150]as well as on the holding ponds.
- [00:01:35.160]And then also daily, we need to collect those carcasses and
- [00:01:38.360]make sure that we properly dispose of those within 36 hours.
- [00:01:42.740]Some of the weekly records and inspections
- [00:01:44.490]that we need to make sure that we're doing.
- [00:01:46.210]We record that liquid depth of the manure storage structure.
- [00:01:51.165]Following that depth marker.
- [00:01:53.740]Before we use any equipment,
- [00:01:55.180]we wanna make sure that we inspect
- [00:01:56.520]that and record those as well.
- [00:01:59.350]Inspect all of our waste control facilities,
- [00:02:01.590]including those lagoons, holding ponds, any pits or tanks.
- [00:02:05.320]And then finally, inspect all of the storm water
- [00:02:07.700]and run off diversion devices that we have.
- [00:02:11.350]Some of the monthly records that
- [00:02:12.690]we want to make sure that we utilize.
- [00:02:15.600]We inspect the facilities for the disposal of carcasses,
- [00:02:19.780]make sure we include those composting facilities,
- [00:02:22.840]any containers that we have,
- [00:02:24.670]and then any of the recent burial sites
- [00:02:26.407]also need to be in that inspection process.
- [00:02:31.160]Some of the yearly things that we take a look at.
- [00:02:33.650]Make sure you evaluate the depth of that sludge in the pond,
- [00:02:37.440]or the holding pond, or that lagoon.
- [00:02:40.000]At least one representative from the operation
- [00:02:42.220]must attend this land application training every five years.
- [00:02:45.990]And then the phosphorus index, the P index,
- [00:02:48.760]make sure that we have that recorded every five years,
- [00:02:51.690]or certainly prior to initial land application.
- [00:02:55.110]Another yearly item that we need to look at.
- [00:02:58.200]Collect and analyze our manure
- [00:03:00.280]and waste water samples annually.
- [00:03:02.750]Collect our soil samples every year on the
- [00:03:05.640]site that's being applied for nitrogen.
- [00:03:08.200]And then make sure that we have our phosphorus levels
- [00:03:11.470]also in place once every five years.
- [00:03:13.840]If you're irrigating,
- [00:03:14.770]make sure that you test the nitrates every five years.
- [00:03:19.130]And then finally, make sure that you
- [00:03:21.120]complete and submit that annual report.
- [00:03:23.930]That's due by March 1st.
- [00:03:25.300]And we've got a sample here within our calendar,
- [00:03:27.640]of the sample report for the annual report.
- [00:03:30.820]And then finally, make sure that we keep those records
- [00:03:33.090]on site for a minimum of five years.
- [00:03:36.520]At this time we're gonna break away
- [00:03:38.430]and give you a chance to do a little work on this worksheet.
- [00:03:42.440]This worksheet's located in your
- [00:03:43.900]materials that you've received today.
- [00:03:46.530]Take this worksheet and then work through
- [00:03:48.310]the nutrient management record keeping calendar,
- [00:03:51.340]so that you can locate where you would
- [00:03:53.280]record some of the required items.
- [00:03:55.750]So this time, we'll break away and give you
- [00:03:57.380]a chance to locate the worksheet,
- [00:04:00.060]and spend a little time on this activity.
- [00:04:02.710]Thank you and have a great day.
