- [00:00:00.000](upbeat music)
- [00:00:04.840]My deal is legs and hair,
- [00:00:07.150]so cattle or horses is my forte,
- [00:00:10.180]or driving a piece of equipment,
- [00:00:12.060]but to sit down and do a set of books,
- [00:00:13.680]that would be horrible for me.
- [00:00:15.199](horse snorting)
- [00:00:16.280]Ag Family is especially if they're out
- [00:00:18.070]in isolated parts of the state.
- [00:00:20.820]They feel isolated.
- [00:00:22.140]I think Women in Ag, it allows people
- [00:00:23.950]to get together and find out
- [00:00:25.110]they aren't the only ones having issues.
- [00:00:27.820]I didn't help in the beginning.
- [00:00:29.120]I just went and then I started taking my students,
- [00:00:32.210]we started a Women in Ag club on campus,
- [00:00:35.610]and so I guess I ended up being a speaker,
- [00:00:38.120]and I usually try to do something
- [00:00:40.230]to make the women laugh.
- [00:00:42.270]So most of the time I just talk about my family.
- [00:00:45.350]It got to the point where my daughter,
- [00:00:47.110]she was growing up, when something would happen here
- [00:00:49.360]on the farm, she'd go, "That better not show up
- [00:00:51.997]"at a Women in Ag speech."
- [00:00:54.465](metal clanking)
- [00:00:56.891]You get a bunch of ladies together
- [00:00:58.200]and they get to have the remote
- [00:01:00.160]and pick what things they wanna watch
- [00:01:02.060]when they're in the hotels and stuff like that.
- [00:01:03.850]I had one lady say she was so excited
- [00:01:06.480]because she had the remote to herself
- [00:01:08.500]and she didn't have to worry about
- [00:01:10.420]what to fix for supper or get the kids
- [00:01:12.740]or the guy to the field or go get parts
- [00:01:14.640]or even drive the tractor herself.
- [00:01:18.520]We have young women that they are running
- [00:01:20.560]the farms and ranches,
- [00:01:22.870]and they are equal partners
- [00:01:25.620]in that operation, and they intend to stay that way
- [00:01:28.350]because it's not just a career, it's a way of life
- [00:01:33.270]and they wanna raise their families there.
- [00:01:36.420]We still have a lot of family farms in Nebraska
- [00:01:39.970]and I think they probably wanna stay that way if they can.
- [00:01:43.605](horse clopping loudly)
- [00:01:46.130]My hope for the future of the Women in Ag conference
- [00:01:48.660]is to stay relevant to the farm families
- [00:01:50.940]and ranch families in Nebraska,
- [00:01:52.990]and whatever issues they have,
- [00:01:55.190]help them find those answers,
- [00:01:56.930]and I think that's what extension does.
- [00:01:58.890]It's almost like a family reunion for some of us,
- [00:02:01.910]and I hope they continue to go for another 35 years,
- [00:02:05.530]so I can see the next generation take over.
- [00:02:08.422](upbeat music)
