- [00:00:05.450]I am Tom Weisslane,
- [00:00:06.850]I'm an associate professor of Entomology.
- [00:00:09.160]I teach a lot of classes typically three to four a semester.
- [00:00:12.941]I am doing a little bit of research on monarch butterflies
- [00:00:17.820]and other insects on milkweed.
- [00:00:19.820]Specifically I'm kind of excited
- [00:00:21.530]about these things called milkweed longhorn beetles
- [00:00:24.060]or milkweed longhorn beetles.
- [00:00:25.600]They're neat little beetles that lives
- [00:00:27.820]on milkweed plants exclusively.
- [00:00:29.770]My other responsibilities are coordination
- [00:00:31.840]of our online master's degree program.
- [00:00:34.649]I coordinate something new
- [00:00:36.560]which is undergraduate research program.
- [00:00:39.040]So I got interested in entomology
- [00:00:40.528]in kind of a roundabout way,
- [00:00:42.410]I was in college and I wasn't doing very well
- [00:00:45.160]and I thought I was gonna get kicked out.
- [00:00:47.370]I thought well take an entomology class
- [00:00:49.520]because I like to fly first.
- [00:00:50.690]So I type my own words for fly fishing.
- [00:00:53.910]I took an entomology class
- [00:00:55.240]and suddenly everything was just like boo came together
- [00:00:58.416]and I was hooked on the field of entomology.
- [00:01:01.750]I got three degrees in it.
- [00:01:03.670]I love working with students because they're ready
- [00:01:06.920]to absorb a bunch of knowledge.
- [00:01:08.680]They get excited about things
- [00:01:10.566]and when you just make kind of a breakthrough,
- [00:01:12.840]something they didn't know before
- [00:01:14.120]there's just kind of this bright moment,
- [00:01:16.900]light up moment that you see with them
- [00:01:18.910]and I think that's fantastic.
- [00:01:20.740]It's also a chance to get the students to know,
- [00:01:23.040]that there's more to insects
- [00:01:24.300]than the fact that they eat plants
- [00:01:25.800]and do damage that we don't like.
- [00:01:27.570]There's a lot of benefits to insects
- [00:01:29.180]that I love to be able to communicate to students.
- [00:01:32.890]I really promote the idea that insects go beyond
- [00:01:36.424]the fact that they can be a pest.
- [00:01:38.740]That there are benefits
- [00:01:39.970]and there are ways to kind of conserve them
- [00:01:42.340]and that we need to conserve them.
- [00:01:43.710]So that's what I think is a great contribution
- [00:01:46.350]that I'm trying to make for graduate student in education.
