- [00:00:06.040]My name is Doctor Louise Lynch-O'Brien,
- [00:00:08.160]and I am faculty with the Department of Entomology.
- [00:00:11.130]I teach some of the large undergraduate courses
- [00:00:13.970]that we have here until 115, which is Insect Biology.
- [00:00:18.020]I also teach Skill 101,
- [00:00:19.840]which is a large science and decision making course
- [00:00:22.370]that a lot of students take.
- [00:00:23.390]And then I also do experiential learning
- [00:00:25.677]for our undergraduate students.
- [00:00:28.300]For extension, I focus on citizen science programming
- [00:00:32.480]and also how insects interact with our health.
- [00:00:35.900]And then also biodiversity, especially in aquatic systems.
- [00:00:40.000]As far as getting involved in Entomology,
- [00:00:42.010]there's a lot of opportunity to work with insects.
- [00:00:44.589]For me, it was as an undergraduate.
- [00:00:46.778]I got to do a research experience in Dublin, Ireland
- [00:00:49.830]working with Mayfly's as bioindicators of climate change.
- [00:00:53.960]So, I just got to dig into stream insects one summer
- [00:00:57.400]and after that, that was it for me.
- [00:01:00.270]I love working with students,
- [00:01:02.450]because I like connecting people with each other
- [00:01:04.877]and then also with the environment.
- [00:01:06.900]So, teaching requires social interactions,
- [00:01:09.709]it requires people to explore new content and new ideas
- [00:01:14.390]but also themselves.
- [00:01:15.520]So, teaching is getting to go along for a journey
- [00:01:18.620]with each student.
- [00:01:19.500]And any student that works with me
- [00:01:21.350]is going to look at the interactions
- [00:01:23.790]between insects and humans.
- [00:01:25.330]That might be through extension and working with the public.
- [00:01:28.195]That might be through teaching,
- [00:01:29.949]which is great if they're going into an education career.
- [00:01:33.720]And then the ways again,
- [00:01:35.240]that people and the environment and insects all interact.
- [00:01:38.860]So, all of those experiences,
- [00:01:40.573]should set them up for a career in any number of fields,
- [00:01:44.760]not just Entomology.
