- [00:00:06.000]I'm Julie Peterson.
- [00:00:07.610]I'm an assistant professor and extension specialist
- [00:00:10.540]in the department of entomology at University of Nebraska.
- [00:00:13.660]And I'm located at the West Central
- [00:00:15.680]Research and Extension Center in North Platte, Nebraska.
- [00:00:18.850]I lead the agro ecosystems entomology lab.
- [00:00:22.400]So we research the applied biology
- [00:00:25.350]and ecology of important crop pests,
- [00:00:28.560]including things like western bean cutworm
- [00:00:30.660]and western corn rootworm.
- [00:00:32.460]But we're also really interested in
- [00:00:33.950]the biology and conservation
- [00:00:35.790]of the beneficial insects out there as well.
- [00:00:38.520]I've always loved entomology, ever since I was a kid
- [00:00:41.450]who was going out with their net and their Kritter Keeper.
- [00:00:44.240]But it wasn't until about my sophomore year of college
- [00:00:47.130]when I took an entomology course as an undergraduate student
- [00:00:50.580]and I just fell in love and I realized that
- [00:00:52.980]I could do entomology as a career.
- [00:00:55.750]So I love just the diversity of ideas
- [00:00:58.740]and backgrounds that students can bring in.
- [00:01:01.240]We can get to a place we wouldn't have gotten by ourselves,
- [00:01:04.870]that by working together, we can really build ideas
- [00:01:07.610]and come up with solutions to really challenging problems.
- [00:01:10.870]So I think when a student gets to
- [00:01:12.340]work out here in North Platte,
- [00:01:13.830]they're really immersed in the experience.
- [00:01:16.500]So we are the only field crops entomology program out here.
- [00:01:21.020]We get to work together with lots of other collaborators
- [00:01:23.910]in areas like agronomy and horticulture
- [00:01:26.740]and irrigation management and livestock.
- [00:01:30.580]We're uniquely positioned because we do have
- [00:01:33.450]both the research and extension.
- [00:01:35.600]So I like to provide my students and my post docs
- [00:01:39.030]with opportunities to meet with farmers,
- [00:01:41.990]work on real commercial agricultural fields,
- [00:01:45.210]and get that real life experience.
- [00:01:47.470]Being out here, the student can really be
- [00:01:49.490]in a cohort of others
- [00:01:51.610]from all these different disciplines and backgrounds
- [00:01:54.420]and I think having that broad interdisciplinary view
- [00:01:58.550]of their project can be really helpful.
- [00:02:01.301](upbeat music)
