- [00:00:05.470]Hi, I'm Erin Bauer and I'm a lecturer
- [00:00:07.860]in the Department of Entomology here at
- [00:00:09.760]the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:00:11.800]My primary responsibilities are as an academic advisor
- [00:00:15.050]and an instructor for our online
- [00:00:17.180]master's program in entomology.
- [00:00:19.410]I also serve as an entomology liaison
- [00:00:21.860]to the forensics department.
- [00:00:24.000]Basically I help some of the forensics students,
- [00:00:26.240]I do some labs to teach them about
- [00:00:28.090]what types of insects are found on bodies,
- [00:00:31.010]for instance at a crime scene.
- [00:00:33.455]Because insects can actually help in solving crime scenes
- [00:00:37.150]in a lot of different ways.
- [00:00:38.130]Help you with time of death and manner of death
- [00:00:40.220]and different things like that.
- [00:00:42.530]Ever since I was a little kid
- [00:00:44.140]I've really had an interest insects
- [00:00:46.210]and I do remember going to a zoo one time
- [00:00:48.960]and seeing a walking stick and my dad pointed it out to me
- [00:00:52.750]and I've been interested ever since.
- [00:00:55.140]I was probably only like two years old
- [00:00:56.640]and so I've always like been outdoors
- [00:00:58.440]playing with the insects.
- [00:00:59.860]That was just something I wanted
- [00:01:00.960]to pursue I guess as I got older
- [00:01:03.110]and it kind of came later in life though.
- [00:01:05.330]I got an undergraduate degree in education
- [00:01:08.350]and actually got a master's degree in library science first.
- [00:01:12.170]And then I later went on and got the M.S. in entomology
- [00:01:16.350]through the online program here at UNL
- [00:01:18.160]which is now what I'm also teaching.
- [00:01:20.480]Graduate students, they're already coming in
- [00:01:22.480]with that insect interest.
- [00:01:25.420]I like to see they always come to me and say,
- [00:01:27.660]oh, I didn't know that
- [00:01:28.770]or I really learned a lot in your course
- [00:01:30.470]or this is really going to help me in my profession
- [00:01:33.380]'cause a lot of the people that are in
- [00:01:34.570]our online courses are already full time.
- [00:01:37.470]So they might be teachers like science teachers
- [00:01:40.110]or they might be in the military,
- [00:01:41.770]they might be working in extension,
- [00:01:43.370]they might be working in labs,
- [00:01:45.160]but usually the master's degree will help them
- [00:01:48.250]gain extra knowledge that will help them
- [00:01:50.320]in whatever profession they're already working in.
