- [00:00:06.020]My name is Ana María Vélez Arango
- [00:00:07.990]and I'm an assistant professor
- [00:00:09.360]in the Department of Entomology
- [00:00:10.820]at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.
- [00:00:13.000]I teach an undergrad class every other year
- [00:00:16.000]and then a graduate level class.
- [00:00:18.650]And in my research we study chemical stressors
- [00:00:21.916]in biotechnology effects insects
- [00:00:25.280]and see how they respond to these stressors
- [00:00:27.400]and maybe how they can evolve resistance to them.
- [00:00:29.900]And we do that by looking
- [00:00:31.530]at different biological levels from the molecule
- [00:00:34.460]to the population.
- [00:00:36.000]So I grew up in South America, in Colombia.
- [00:00:39.110]It's one of the most bio-diverse countries in the world,
- [00:00:42.290]so there was a lot of insects and animals
- [00:00:44.200]and I was really interested in animals,
- [00:00:46.020]so I decided to major in Biology.
- [00:00:48.700]I had a chance to do a project in a butterfly garden
- [00:00:51.550]and I got fascinated by insects,
- [00:00:53.890]then after that I continued to do a masters in entomology,
- [00:00:56.660]a PHD in entomology where maybe they got a little bit more
- [00:01:00.540]into molecular biology and toxicology
- [00:01:03.300]and biotechnology with insects.
- [00:01:05.480]I love working with students
- [00:01:07.020]because I love to see when they start learning
- [00:01:10.390]how to be a researcher,
- [00:01:11.480]so answering those questions on their own
- [00:01:13.650]and getting more questions.
- [00:01:15.360]I also love working with the student mentoring team
- [00:01:18.710]and showing them how to face the challenges
- [00:01:21.480]that you get during grad school.
- [00:01:23.510]They get experience to do a research project,
- [00:01:26.440]it's full of challenges but they learn a lot.
- [00:01:28.080]A lot of the students think that when they arrive
- [00:01:30.750]everything should work, but science is not like that,
- [00:01:33.440]there is a lot of things not working.
- [00:01:35.360]I would say to any grad student coming to do grad school
- [00:01:38.610]in Entomology, or even in any science,
- [00:01:41.100]just be aware that you don't need to be the smartest,
- [00:01:44.830]you just need to be really passionate
- [00:01:46.570]about what you're doing.
- [00:01:47.790]There is a lot of mistakes,
- [00:01:48.910]a lot of things that don't work,
- [00:01:50.220]but you learn a lot from those experiences.
