- [00:00:12.525]University of Nebraska chancellor Ronnie Green who,
- [00:00:16.070]this is my first chance to talk
- [00:00:17.300]to you this basketball season.
- [00:00:19.810]First Big Ten game of the year.
- [00:00:22.190]Uh, last four home games in December
- [00:00:24.480]it's been a good home stand.
- [00:00:26.160]Uh, we start the new year in East Lansing next week,
- [00:00:28.790]but what do you think about Amy Williams
- [00:00:30.489]and the strong start the games have so far in this year?
- [00:00:32.650]Well, you know Matt it's really exciting
- [00:00:35.619]to see a ten and one team on our floor today
- [00:00:38.320]and this stage of the season you know,
- [00:00:40.639]first Big Ten game, Iowa here in town today
- [00:00:44.800]played really well first half.
- [00:00:46.610]Great to see it and you know um
- [00:00:48.640]Amy Williams is a rock star in my viewpoint and you know
- [00:00:52.620]not only was she an outstanding basketball player
- [00:00:55.659]for us and is getting an outstanding coach here,
- [00:00:58.180]but you know she was a math major if you can imagine that.
- [00:01:01.160]She was, she's a smart girl too you know?
- [00:01:03.550]So it's just um, it's great to be in underway
- [00:01:07.000]with our Big Ten season.
- [00:01:08.170]Looking forward to a big season with the girls this year.
- [00:01:10.700]Chancellor Ronnie Green is with us here.
- [00:01:12.450]They have December, the end of the fall semester,
- [00:01:15.710]you had the commencement ceremonies here not too long ago.
- [00:01:19.397]I know commencement is always a special event for you.
- [00:01:21.930]I always loved going to it when my kids were in there.
- [00:01:24.220]What does commencement represent for this university
- [00:01:26.920]and the state of Nebraska overall?
- [00:01:28.560]Well we did have commencement just a little
- [00:01:30.700]over a week ago, well exactly a week ago today
- [00:01:34.335]and it was exciting here on the floor in Pinnacle Bank Arena
- [00:01:38.040]to have about 1,400 new graduates
- [00:01:40.300]from the University of Nebraska Lincoln.
- [00:01:42.560]That talent that gets unleashed into the world
- [00:01:45.340]you know, with every graduation that we have.
- [00:01:47.940]This was a particularly exciting year
- [00:01:50.484]for us that we just closed,
- [00:01:52.430]because not only was it our 150th anniversary. (mumbles)
- [00:01:55.890]We're finishing up the last few days in 2019
- [00:01:58.600]of celebrating that,
- [00:01:59.989]but it also was the largest graduating class
- [00:02:03.830]in our university's history.
- [00:02:05.320]Wow.
- [00:02:06.180]By over 350 more graduates than we've ever had
- [00:02:10.150]in the history of the University of Nebraska Lincoln
- [00:02:12.590]and just to see that level of talent
- [00:02:15.410]and how well prepared they are to go out
- [00:02:17.660]and make their mark on the world.
- [00:02:19.485]And to see that culminated commencement
- [00:02:21.890]is always a really special thing.
- [00:02:23.370]You know, I also like to ask different groups
- [00:02:29.180]at the end of commencement to stand up and be recognized.
- [00:02:32.755]And you know, one of those is this number of students
- [00:02:35.740]that we have that are the first generation
- [00:02:38.180]in their families to achieve a college education
- [00:02:41.100]or to have the opportunity to achieve a college education.
- [00:02:44.730]And no surprise again, about a quarter
- [00:02:48.950]of our graduates stood up when I asked them to do that.
- [00:02:52.727]Our commencement last Saturday,
- [00:02:54.430]it's just a really special time to see that new talent
- [00:02:56.860]blown into the world with a Nebraska education.
- [00:02:59.290]It's equipped them so well to be successful.
- [00:03:01.550]Chancellor Ronnie Green is with us at the half.
- [00:03:03.740]Nebraska leading Iowa 38 34 Matt Coding with you.
- [00:03:07.264]Chancellor wrapping up the fall semester last week
- [00:03:10.350]and really all of 2019 in just a few days here.
- [00:03:13.550]It's hard to believe.
- [00:03:14.480]What to you has been some of the highlights
- [00:03:16.900]of this extra special Ann One 50 year marking?
- [00:03:19.746]150 years since university charter in 1869.
- [00:03:23.580]Well as I said a minute ago Matt,
- [00:03:25.052]we have celebrated that all the way throughout the year.
- [00:03:28.520]I remember going into the year this past holiday season
- [00:03:31.964]in 2018 coming into 2019, being excited
- [00:03:35.016]about what that was going to look like.
- [00:03:37.587]Then we certainly had a great year celebrating
- [00:03:40.440]the 150th anniversary of this great institution.
- [00:03:43.690]The people, the history, the opportunity
- [00:03:47.672]that we had to mark that with several great events
- [00:03:51.010]during the year.
- [00:03:52.080]Charter week last February was uh particularly successful.
- [00:03:55.200]I'm actually believe it or not, working
- [00:03:56.684]on a jigsaw puzzle during the holiday break.
- [00:03:59.200]Is that right?
- [00:04:00.033]It is a picture of the Love Library lit up in red.
- [00:04:04.960]When we had charter week in February
- [00:04:06.980]and we had that big celebration.
- [00:04:08.348]Opening of a number of big things
- [00:04:10.619]for the university this past year.
- [00:04:13.170]The cherished Nebraska exhibit in Morrill hall
- [00:04:16.366]would open during that charter week.
- [00:04:18.637]The opportunity to open the new Carson Center
- [00:04:21.270]for the Emerging Media Arts this past August
- [00:04:23.820]with it's big kickoff year with new students in place.
- [00:04:28.980]Our engineering expansion announcement
- [00:04:30.909]and the concluding forward now of that growth
- [00:04:33.680]of our engineering college with the first part
- [00:04:35.830]of that construction now underway.
- [00:04:37.280]The announcement of the big Go Big project for athletics
- [00:04:40.775]and the new facility that we're now
- [00:04:43.018]in the process of getting the construction underway
- [00:04:46.170]and started on here this spring.
- [00:04:48.558]Just tremendous number of things that happened
- [00:04:51.242]across the year.
- [00:04:53.010]Biggest research year we've ever had on record
- [00:04:55.149]for the university continue
- [00:04:57.210]to see our research program expand and
- [00:04:59.440]as I already said, largest number of graduates
- [00:05:01.850]that this institution has ever had.
- [00:05:04.280]So big big year for us.
- [00:05:05.854]Excited about the year ahead which is going
- [00:05:08.460]to see us now investing in over 500 million dollars
- [00:05:11.989]in new facilities across our campus.
- [00:05:15.280]I've equated it to talking about the time of the cranes.
- [00:05:19.760]I used to refer to it as here a few years ago
- [00:05:22.040]when we were building Pinnacle Bank Arena.
- [00:05:23.746]We were building the hay market, building a lot
- [00:05:25.866]in downtown Lincoln, building the new business building
- [00:05:28.460]on the Lincoln UNL campus.
- [00:05:30.840]We're gonna see another few years ahead of us here.
- [00:05:33.520]The next three years where it's gonna be even more
- [00:05:35.620]that way for UNL than it's ever been in our history.
- [00:05:38.688]So it's just exciting to anticipate the huge year
- [00:05:42.715]of 2020 that we have ahead
- [00:05:44.558]for the University of Nebraska Lincoln.
- [00:05:46.780]I'm very excited to see it.
- [00:05:48.130]Always exciting, especially the facilities and everything.
- [00:05:50.880]You're doing a great job.
- [00:05:51.730]I know your wife Jean is here today.
- [00:05:53.750]You guys are big fans, I mean even
- [00:05:56.450]before you became the chancellor and everything.
- [00:05:58.250]I mean have you enjoyed the first half?
- [00:05:59.580]Yeah we have.
- [00:06:00.470]You know we have all of our family here like
- [00:06:03.060]so many people for the holidays.
- [00:06:05.342]All four of our children are here with us
- [00:06:08.007]and our granddaughter.
- [00:06:10.180]Enjoying the game here today and it's,
- [00:06:13.700]Husker athletics is just such a special part
- [00:06:16.530]of the state, of the university.
- [00:06:18.730]It's been a special part of our life
- [00:06:20.280]for over 35 years.
- [00:06:22.860]Many people like to kid me about the fact
- [00:06:25.828]that my wife is probably as avid a Husker fan
- [00:06:29.420]as lives on the planet for all sports
- [00:06:31.870]and she is calculating this game very carefully today
- [00:06:36.350]and is really really excited about what we see ahead
- [00:06:39.530]for this season for our women's basketball team.
- [00:06:41.370]A great step, what a great att.
- [00:06:43.406]You should come down and do this more often.
- [00:06:45.190]I love doing this live with you here.
- [00:06:46.707]Yes, how about the freshman today?
- [00:06:48.010]The freshman stepping up on the team.
- [00:06:49.860]Izzy Bourne?
- [00:06:50.720]Yeah.
- [00:06:51.553]It's exciting to see.
- [00:06:53.190]Trinity Brady.
- [00:06:54.330]Yeah, and on top of that I always like
- [00:06:57.258]to remind all of our Husker athletics fans
- [00:07:00.950]that these athletes are also students
- [00:07:03.739]and they're among some of the very best students
- [00:07:06.100]that we have at the university of Nebraska.
- [00:07:08.450]Another big thing this year, should have mentioned this
- [00:07:11.077]a few minutes ago when we were talking it.
- [00:07:13.121]Big huge year for our student athletes,
- [00:07:16.260]with Angela Mercurio being named the NCAA woman of the year.
- [00:07:20.360]Only the second time in our history that that has happened
- [00:07:24.790]and the only time it has happened in the Big Ten
- [00:07:28.160]in quite a number of years.
- [00:07:30.268]And then Anton Stevenson is soon to be awarded
- [00:07:33.400]a top ten award for by the NCAA coming up here in January.
- [00:07:37.740]These student athletes are just amazing all the way around.
- [00:07:41.830]So it's thrilling to be able to watch them compete.
- [00:07:45.100]Chancellor, I've enjoyed this.
- [00:07:46.420]Wish we could do it longer.
- [00:07:47.440]You're the best. You bet.
- [00:07:48.273]You bet. Thank you.
- [00:07:49.106]Take care, go Big Red.
- [00:07:49.939]Happy holidays, go Big Red.
- [00:07:50.772]Half-time 38 34 Nebraska leads Iowa.
- [00:07:53.800]We'll have more half-time in a few moments.
- [00:07:55.680]From Learfield IMG college,
- [00:07:58.300]this is Big Red basketball.
