- [00:00:01.130]Many of you have probably received requests
- [00:00:03.120]from students for incompletes,
- [00:00:04.648]and you might have even suggested getting an incomplete
- [00:00:07.470]to students in the past.
- [00:00:08.970]They can be really an effective way to support a student
- [00:00:11.640]who's facing a really difficult situation,
- [00:00:14.330]but they're not always appropriate.
- [00:00:16.650]When misused, they can make a difficult situation
- [00:00:18.970]even more challenging.
- [00:00:20.260]Here are a few things to consider
- [00:00:21.940]before assigning the grade of incomplete.
- [00:00:24.250]First, how much work has the student completed?
- [00:00:27.190]They should have most of the course work done
- [00:00:29.610]before you even consider giving them an incomplete.
- [00:00:33.010]Second, you should work with the student
- [00:00:36.190]to determine the conditions
- [00:00:38.780]under which they'll get a new grade.
- [00:00:41.650]So what work has to be completed and what percent
- [00:00:44.610]of the course grade does that work represent?
- [00:00:47.570]When must they turn it in
- [00:00:49.490]and what grade will be assigned if the work is not completed
- [00:00:54.090]and given to you to make the change?
- [00:00:57.970]So keep in mind that if you do decide
- [00:01:00.040]to assign a grade of incomplete,
- [00:01:01.840]you should not ask the student
- [00:01:03.120]to sit in on the course the following term.
- [00:01:05.650]This is not a helpful arrangement for a number of reasons.
- [00:01:08.880]First, students have no recourse to raise concerns
- [00:01:11.570]about grades or conditions in the subsequent class
- [00:01:13.940]because they're not actually enrolled in it.
- [00:01:16.460]It creates an extra load or burden that's hidden
- [00:01:19.030]and not visible, and they might in fact be overloaded
- [00:01:22.020]that next term, kinda creating a snowball effect.
- [00:01:25.850]And finally, if the student mas already completed most
- [00:01:28.900]of the assignments for the class
- [00:01:30.220]as they should for an incomplete,
- [00:01:31.800]retaking the whole class is a waste of time.
- [00:01:34.270]So your other options is
- [00:01:35.480]to give the student the grade that they really earned,
- [00:01:40.920]and then they can retake the course the next term,
- [00:01:43.840]or they should withdraw if they still have that option.
- [00:01:46.950]If you have questions, please talk to me
- [00:01:48.890]or someone else in your department about what to do.
- [00:01:51.213]Thanks.
