- [00:00:03.000]Hello, and welcome.
- [00:00:04.544]I hope you enjoyed the Thanksgiving holiday
- [00:00:07.130]as much as I did.
- [00:00:08.890]After sitting down with family members,
- [00:00:11.320]I'm reminded how thankful I am
- [00:00:13.560]for the many blessings at home
- [00:00:15.510]and right here in the College of Architecture.
- [00:00:18.670]This fall, we celebrated the 50th anniversary
- [00:00:21.970]of our London Study Abroad Program.
- [00:00:24.560]It was heartwarming to hear fond memories being retold
- [00:00:28.760]and alumni sharing what a pivotal experience
- [00:00:31.750]the program has been in their lives.
- [00:00:34.620]As the celebration continues,
- [00:00:36.620]stay tuned for information on our plans
- [00:00:38.960]this spring in London.
- [00:00:41.150]And I know several of you have been asking how to order
- [00:00:43.810]our London commemorative book.
- [00:00:45.870]Well, I'm excited to let you know,
- [00:00:48.500]the book is now for sale online.
- [00:00:52.910]We believe in the power of space
- [00:00:55.300]to shape experience and improve learning.
- [00:00:58.890]And we need our building to provide a relevant
- [00:01:01.190]and competitive environment to recruit
- [00:01:03.780]and retain students while preparing them
- [00:01:06.490]for a rapidly changing profession.
- [00:01:09.820]We've started a master construction plan
- [00:01:12.430]to reinvigorate existing spaces
- [00:01:15.060]to accommodate the evolving needs of our students.
- [00:01:18.790]Chancellor Green has been very supportive
- [00:01:21.480]with the University making an investment
- [00:01:23.640]in the renovation project.
- [00:01:25.820]And while we still have a ways to go to accomplish
- [00:01:28.270]all we need, we greatly appreciate this vote of confidence.
- [00:01:33.070]I'll be sure to share details as they evolve.
- [00:01:36.870]Other additions to the college include new faculty.
- [00:01:40.410]Interior Design, welcomes Kendra Ordia,
- [00:01:43.490]an alumni returning to us from Texas State University.
- [00:01:47.430]Yujia Wang joins our Landscape Architecture Program
- [00:01:50.930]from Sasaki Associates in Boston.
- [00:01:53.610]I'm excited about the energy and enthusiasm
- [00:01:56.900]they bring to the College.
- [00:01:59.910]Big changes are coming to U & L's east campus.
- [00:02:03.340]Two family-focused programs are joining forces.
- [00:02:07.070]And our fourth year collaborative studio
- [00:02:09.040]is helping frame and develop design ideas
- [00:02:11.860]for their new facility.
- [00:02:13.316](children play)
- [00:02:16.010]This semester, we are working with
- [00:02:18.910]the Ruth's Staple's child development lab
- [00:02:21.380]on east campus as well as the family resource center
- [00:02:24.650]to develop a new duplex facility
- [00:02:27.770]for these two new engagement partners.
- [00:02:30.220]We use our indoor classroom, our outdoor classroom
- [00:02:34.900]and what we call "The Beyond", which is east campus.
- [00:02:38.473]And we wanted that reflected in our new building.
- [00:02:42.690]So in this studio we have architecture students,
- [00:02:45.670]interior design students and landscape architecture students
- [00:02:48.930]and then it's co-thought by faculty from different
- [00:02:51.350]disciplines as well.
- [00:02:52.350]It's been really collaborative,
- [00:02:53.660]and it's just really interesting to show
- [00:02:55.290]just how everyone works together.
- [00:02:57.230]I love this project because it allows us to think through
- [00:03:00.170]a different lens.
- [00:03:01.480]It's not everyday that you work with children.
- [00:03:03.770]Children see things from a hight of right here,
- [00:03:06.210]whereas adults see things for a height of up here.
- [00:03:08.770]And it's a totally different perspective.
- [00:03:11.020](child mumbles)
- [00:03:14.450]It's been really rewarding in that we feel confident
- [00:03:17.450]being able to share our vision
- [00:03:19.070]for what we want the building to look like
- [00:03:21.160]and that students have helped us work through that process.
- [00:03:26.080]Another program getting a lot of press lately,
- [00:03:28.910]is community and regional planning.
- [00:03:31.610]In a collaboration with U & L extension and JEO consulting,
- [00:03:36.060]our students are helping the village of Winslow, Nebraska
- [00:03:39.550]recover from the devastating spring floods.
- [00:03:43.160]They're exploring the bold option
- [00:03:45.920]of relocating the entire village to higher ground.
- [00:03:49.350]It's providing an equal opportunity for students
- [00:03:53.500]to experience the devastation
- [00:03:55.977]that a flood will have on a community.
- [00:03:58.850]And the opportunity to help people move forward
- [00:04:02.080]and to recover from that is a very rewarding experience.
- [00:04:06.870]It's no longer book knowledge,
- [00:04:08.920]it's actually applying what we've learned
- [00:04:11.370]and preparing us for helping communities and
- [00:04:16.040]to be planners eventually, for communities.
- [00:04:19.440]We wish the community of Winslow a rapid recovery.
- [00:04:22.660]And I look forward to the challenges
- [00:04:24.520]and opportunities of a new year.
- [00:04:26.980]As I count my blessings this season,
- [00:04:29.270]I do count you among them.
- [00:04:31.640]I hope to hear from you soon.
- [00:04:33.780]Until next time.
- [00:04:35.230]Here is wishing you and yours
- [00:04:37.730]joy
- [00:04:38.740]peace
- [00:04:39.580]and prosperity.
