- [00:00:01.300]Welcome back, it's halftime.
- [00:00:02.380]Greg Sharpe in our Husker Network Studios,
- [00:00:04.170]joined now by the Chancellor at the
- [00:00:05.730]University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:08.130]Well, the university did get some recent
- [00:00:09.996]really good news about three faculty members
- [00:00:12.810]who have been recognized by their scientific peers
- [00:00:15.250]around the world for their work.
- [00:00:17.200]Can you tell us about these faculty members
- [00:00:19.010]and what this honor means for the university?
- [00:00:21.350]Well Greg, one of the biggest honors that can come
- [00:00:24.840]to a faculty member in the sciences is to be named
- [00:00:29.040]a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement
- [00:00:31.840]of Science, it's the national premiere international
- [00:00:35.280]organization of scientists in the world.
- [00:00:39.409]They publish Science magazine, which is the most recognized
- [00:00:43.070]science publication in the world.
- [00:00:45.220]It's prestigious to have an article in Science
- [00:00:48.060]published in Science and they recognize
- [00:00:51.060]a very small percentage of their membership
- [00:00:54.210]with the designation of fellow.
- [00:00:57.050]And that awarding is done this time of year.
- [00:00:59.770]We just found out here a few weeks ago
- [00:01:02.730]that three of our faculty members at UNL
- [00:01:06.130]are in this year's class of being
- [00:01:09.260]named a fellow in AAAS.
- [00:01:11.740]Huge honor for all three of them.
- [00:01:15.250]You know I was a fellow myself a few years ago
- [00:01:17.970]and I remember the feeling of what that meant
- [00:01:21.810]when I got that notice.
- [00:01:23.770]So I know they feel that very same way.
- [00:01:26.830]And very proud of each of them.
- [00:01:28.270]Ed Cahoon, who is a professor in our biochemistry department
- [00:01:32.800]and the Institute of Agri/Natural resources.
- [00:01:35.270]He's also the leader, the director of our Center
- [00:01:38.170]for Plant Science Innovation at the university,
- [00:01:40.420]one of our leading research centers.
- [00:01:42.840]Internationally known in plant science research.
- [00:01:47.200]Ed is actually a lipid biochemist, works on oil seeds.
- [00:01:51.680]And we've actually talk about him on several shows
- [00:01:54.940]where some of his discoveries over the last year.
- [00:01:59.930]Nebraskasinic Acid, if you remember, a work that he's done
- [00:02:04.910]in China, so Ed--
- [00:02:06.810]And on a personal note here, Ed and I are actually
- [00:02:08.990]distantly related.
- [00:02:10.040]He's a distant cousin.
- [00:02:11.800]I grew up in Virginia, my mother was a Cahoon,
- [00:02:14.450]so when I got here I found out Ed Cahoon was on the faculty
- [00:02:17.890]so, a big honor for Ed.
- [00:02:20.900]Tom Clemente, who is a long time professor in our
- [00:02:24.400]department of Agronomy and Horticulture, also a part
- [00:02:26.900]of the Center for Plant Science Innovation.
- [00:02:29.150]A molecular geneticist, works with soy beans
- [00:02:33.010]and with corn and with other species.
- [00:02:35.250]Is well known as one of the people that developed
- [00:02:37.300]the gene delivery mechanism for targeted gene introduction
- [00:02:41.030]in the plants, so big honor for Tom.
- [00:02:43.660]And then Eileen Hebets, who is a professor in our
- [00:02:46.470]School of Biological Sciences.
- [00:02:48.720]Eileen is a well known arachnid,
- [00:02:50.950]that means spider biologist.
- [00:02:53.840]One of our leading teachers on the campus,
- [00:02:56.200]also a leading researcher in neuro-signaling in spiders.
- [00:03:02.070]So, big honor for Eileen as well.
- [00:03:04.700]Her husband Jay, was named a fellow last year to AAAS.
- [00:03:10.000]He's also a member of our School of Biological Sciences
- [00:03:12.770]faculty, so just tremendous honor and recognition
- [00:03:15.870]for these three faculty members adding to the
- [00:03:19.790]story and history of AAAS fellows that the
- [00:03:22.490]University of Nebraska has contributed to the
- [00:03:25.130]American Association for the Advancement of Science.
- [00:03:27.860]Well congratulations to all of them.
- [00:03:29.260]You also have some good news regarding the recruitment
- [00:03:31.130]of a new academic leader to the campus.
- [00:03:33.750]How does this feel going into a new year with
- [00:03:35.830]this search now behind you?
- [00:03:37.370]Well, we had the opportunity to look for a new
- [00:03:40.820]Executive Vice Chancellor.
- [00:03:42.210]Many of our listeners will remember Donde Plowman,
- [00:03:45.930]who served as the Executive Vice Chancellor
- [00:03:48.320]for the last three and a half years, recently became
- [00:03:50.500]the chancellor of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
- [00:03:53.920]So we've been searching since middle of this year
- [00:03:57.170]to find the new Executive Vice Chancellor for
- [00:04:00.320]academic affairs, it's the number two position at the
- [00:04:02.780]University of Nebraska-Lincoln, leads all of our
- [00:04:05.100]academic programs and a very critically important
- [00:04:09.260]position for our campus.
- [00:04:11.680]And we were very, very pleased this past week
- [00:04:14.760]to announce that our top candidate, lead candidate
- [00:04:17.940]from that search, Dr. Elizabeth Spiller is being named
- [00:04:22.230]to that position.
- [00:04:23.370]She'll be joining us in March from her current role
- [00:04:27.470]where she serves as the Dean at the
- [00:04:29.170]College of Arts and Sciences at the
- [00:04:30.353]University of California Davis, the largest single college,
- [00:04:35.080]the college she oversees, is the largest single college
- [00:04:38.730]anywhere in the University of California system.
- [00:04:42.700]Elizabeth is a well known scholar, actually in
- [00:04:45.880]renaissance literature herself.
- [00:04:47.610]Her background is in renaissance literature.
- [00:04:50.020]But she's been an accomplished administrator
- [00:04:52.050]at Florida State University, at Virginia Tech,
- [00:04:54.590]my alma mater, where she was Dean of the
- [00:04:57.870]College of Liberal Arts at Virginia Tech and most recently,
- [00:05:00.860]these last several years at the
- [00:05:02.110]University of California Davis.
- [00:05:04.640]Hold degrees from Harvard, her graduate work
- [00:05:07.940]was done at Harvard and her Bachelors Degree
- [00:05:10.530]was done at Amherst College in Massachusetts.
- [00:05:12.890]A native of Massachusetts and we're gonna make
- [00:05:14.860]a Nebraskan out of her when she and her husband
- [00:05:18.620]join us here in March.
- [00:05:19.690]So very, very excited about Elizabeth
- [00:05:22.490]and the leadership that we know she is going to bring
- [00:05:24.900]to the university and leading our academic enterprise
- [00:05:27.240]here pretty soon.
- [00:05:28.300]Fantastic, Ronnie Green with us here at halftime.
- [00:05:30.380]Kent and Jake are back with more in the second half, next.
