- [00:00:03.550]So my name is Corey Rumann and I'm an Assistant Professor
- [00:00:06.530]of practice in the Educational Administration Department
- [00:00:10.893]and I primarily teach the student affairs program courses.
- [00:00:15.580]So I have a background in counseling so I was a counselor
- [00:00:22.130]at a community college in north west Wyoming
- [00:00:24.500]and then after that I went to Iowa State University
- [00:00:27.400]and got my Doctorate in educational leadership
- [00:00:31.410]with an emphasis in student affairs
- [00:00:33.800]following, after I got my PHD, I then went to
- [00:00:36.760]the University of West Georgia where I was
- [00:00:39.140]the coordinator for the student affairs program there,
- [00:00:41.840]which was a brand new program, and then also taught
- [00:00:45.440]courses actually in their counselor
- [00:00:47.490]education program department.
- [00:00:50.670]I am, I teach primarily in the student affairs cohort
- [00:00:54.920]program, so the face to face classes and typically
- [00:00:58.452]teach introduction to student affairs, college student
- [00:01:01.320]development theory, and then also our counseling
- [00:01:04.590]principles for educational leadership course.
- [00:01:07.510]I have also taught online and I also advise students
- [00:01:11.660]in our online masters degree program in higher ed.
- [00:01:16.830]So that's my primary focus and with regard to engagement,
- [00:01:20.354]I've been involved in a number of the student affairs
- [00:01:24.410]professional organizations, NASPA and ACPA,
- [00:01:27.990]most recently was involved with the ACPA Midwest
- [00:01:33.360]conference in Kansas City where I served on
- [00:01:35.680]the planning committee and was in charge of the graduate
- [00:01:40.170]student initiatives program as coach there
- [00:01:43.650]and then also coordinated and planned the graduate
- [00:01:48.640]student case study competition there.
- [00:01:51.330]And so, that's my primary focus and that's also related
- [00:01:53.550]to engagement, social justice and inclusion
- [00:01:56.900]and equity issues related to student affairs
- [00:01:59.500]and trying to be involved in that, not only within
- [00:02:02.320]student affairs but also at the community level
- [00:02:04.769]outside of my work as a faculty member here.
- [00:02:10.200]Yeah, I think the favorite part,
- [00:02:12.540]certainly interacting with the students
- [00:02:14.530]and getting to see that, having that interaction
- [00:02:18.563]and being part of their learning process
- [00:02:21.270]and just their development as, not only as educators
- [00:02:25.010]and as community members and future educators,
- [00:02:30.450]I guess for me learning takes place during the process
- [00:02:33.210]so it's not so much about the end result of the grades
- [00:02:35.870]or the points or all of that, it's more somebody who is
- [00:02:38.890]connected and engaged can critically think,
- [00:02:40.850]challenge themselves and others,
- [00:02:42.610]and does that in a way that is
- [00:02:49.660]not just focused but recognized as the ongoing nature
- [00:02:53.640]of that so that there isn't something specific
- [00:02:57.070]that you have to learn at the end, just knowing that
- [00:02:59.210]the process itself is what is important.
- [00:03:01.500]Being an assistance professor of practice and focusing
- [00:03:03.890]on the teaching advising is really important to me
- [00:03:06.180]obviously, and being engaged in the profession,
- [00:03:09.100]but I do appreciate that piece of it too,
- [00:03:11.620]that I get to focus on that.
- [00:03:13.650]But I also do appreciate, I think, that there's at least
- [00:03:16.820]for me here, is a challenge to think more critically
- [00:03:20.980]and think more about social justice and inclusion
- [00:03:23.390]and diversity and that's always, I think
- [00:03:25.880]for me it's important to stay engaged with that because of
- [00:03:30.820]the many privileged identities I have,
- [00:03:33.270]I have to sort of be reminded often about the lens
- [00:03:36.450]that I look through and so this is, I think,
- [00:03:38.520]an environment where that doesn't always happen
- [00:03:41.930]but typically I'm challenged to think
- [00:03:44.990]from a more critical place about my own biases
- [00:03:48.330]and prejudices and stereotypes but also how I can impact
- [00:03:53.400]the systemic nature of things and maybe make things
- [00:03:56.120]more equitable across the board for folk.
- [00:03:58.530]So I think that's being challenged, is really,
- [00:04:01.620]I appreciate that about being here and getting to teach
- [00:04:05.130]in student affairs and higher education
- [00:04:06.960]and being challenged by students and other faculty
- [00:04:09.640]members and colleagues and staff
- [00:04:11.040]and that's probably, I really enjoy that piece too.
- [00:04:14.020]So the relationships are really important to me.
