- [00:00:03.540]Well, first of all,
- [00:00:04.373]thanks for giving me this opportunity to say a few things.
- [00:00:08.780]My name is Rich Torraco.
- [00:00:11.360]I'm a professor in the Department
- [00:00:13.660]of Educational Administration.
- [00:00:14.780]My area is workforce and human resource development.
- [00:00:19.070]I've been in the Department of Educational Administration
- [00:00:22.960]and UNL for...
- [00:00:27.160]quite a while, a couple of decades.
- [00:00:29.620]Before I came here I was at the University of Minnesota
- [00:00:33.960]as an instructor and as a doctoral student.
- [00:00:38.600]And prior to the University of Minnesota,
- [00:00:41.780]I spent a number of years
- [00:00:43.180]as an education and training consultant
- [00:00:46.380]and as a vice president
- [00:00:48.660]and manager of education and training
- [00:00:50.520]in the corporate world.
- [00:00:54.030]I'll try to tell you just a little bit about my research.
- [00:00:57.930]I uh,
- [00:00:58.794](inhales)
- [00:01:00.310]primarily focus on
- [00:01:02.516](inhales)
- [00:01:04.600]economic inequality and its implications and consequences.
- [00:01:09.310]Economic inequality is the income gap
- [00:01:13.920]between the wealthy and the poor.
- [00:01:15.980]And in the US economic inequality is getting worse,
- [00:01:20.290]the gap is getting wider.
- [00:01:23.960]And economic inequality contributes to educational inequity.
- [00:01:31.060]Educational inequity,
- [00:01:34.630]is manifested in
- [00:01:38.480]low income students being less likely
- [00:01:40.730]to complete college than their wealthier counterparts.
- [00:01:44.280]Those without education,
- [00:01:47.350]who don't have the opportunities for better jobs,
- [00:01:50.470]are then confronted with low wage positions,
- [00:01:54.270]so they then have a lower earning capacity.
- [00:01:58.800]So, those with lower earning capacity represent
- [00:02:02.450]a proportion of the US population where the gap
- [00:02:05.320]between the wealthy and the poor is increasing.
- [00:02:10.760]So we can see that economic inequality
- [00:02:14.140]is certainly a serious problem in and of itself,
- [00:02:16.880]but it also contributes to educational inequity,
- [00:02:19.680]which contributes to a reduced career opportunity,
- [00:02:22.300]which then leads to lower earning capacity,
- [00:02:25.280]which perpetuates the cycle of economic inequality.
- [00:02:30.820]Students are, have always been,
- [00:02:33.220]the most important part of what I do here,
- [00:02:36.600]and they continue to be.
- [00:02:37.570]And we, everyone here, in,
- [00:02:42.920]in higher education
- [00:02:43.830]and certainly in UNL and in our department,
- [00:02:47.430]the Department of Educational Administration
- [00:02:49.140]are blessed with wonderful students.
- [00:02:51.630]We have several programs
- [00:02:53.160]that bring in some of the best students anywhere.
- [00:02:56.730]Our department is blessed with students who,
- [00:03:00.410]for the most part, are in our courses,
- [00:03:03.590]and in our programs because they want to be.
- [00:03:07.120]They're chosen to be here, so,
- [00:03:09.950]what's not to like about the students we have?
- [00:03:13.160]They are self motivated, self directed,
- [00:03:16.540]and they push us, push me, to be the best I can be
- [00:03:21.980]as an instructor and as a researcher.
