[00:00:17.850]why we developed Parent Connectors.
[00:00:20.880]Our research and training center
[00:00:23.230]at the University of South Florida had been engaged
[00:00:26.190]in developing the system of care
[00:00:28.560]for children who have serious emotional problems.
[00:00:31.860]And a very important principle of that system of care
[00:00:35.980]was to really employ parents as equal decision makers.
[00:00:40.850]So we were very oriented toward what could we do
[00:00:45.310]to support those kinds of concepts.
[00:00:48.540]Krista and I begun working together
[00:00:51.060]primarily around the system of care
[00:00:53.190]and its development in 1985.
[00:00:59.640]There's several factors that make it unique.
[00:01:02.540]In the operation of the program,
[00:01:04.860]Parent Connectors is conducted
[00:01:07.440]primarily on the phone with parents.
[00:01:10.777]People are often shocked that we do an intervention
[00:01:14.520]over the phone, parents calling other parents.
[00:01:16.840]Many parents can't get to their mental health sessions,
[00:01:20.170]transportation's an issue,
[00:01:21.610]so we designed it to be on the phone
[00:01:24.600]so that it can be at any time the parent is available.
[00:01:27.570]There were, and still are, many parent support groups
[00:01:32.300]that are run by different parent agencies.
[00:01:35.970]Everybody loved the parent support group,
[00:01:38.480]but getting sustained attendance was very difficult
[00:01:42.430]because of the circumstances of the family.
[00:01:44.690]So we said let's try something different.
