[00:00:04.810]of the Johnny Carson Center for the Emerging Media Arts.
[00:00:08.598]Johnny Carson was an incredibly talented and witty man
[00:00:12.100]whose 30 years of innovation single handedly defined
[00:00:15.730]late night television.
[00:00:17.490]I had the great fortune
[00:00:18.590]to meet Johnny near the beginning of my career,
[00:00:21.010]first as a writer for "The Simpsons"
[00:00:23.140]and then, just a few months later,
[00:00:24.860]when I was picked to take over
[00:00:26.300]as host of "Late Night" from David Letterman.
[00:00:29.130]I was about to become
[00:00:30.270]one of only three late night talk show hosts in America.
[00:00:33.730]I had no on-camera experience
[00:00:36.570]and I and everyone in the country
[00:00:38.450]knew I was in way over my head.
[00:00:41.220]Johnny, aware of all this, was very kind
[00:00:44.100]and he gave me one piece of advice I've never forgotten,
[00:00:47.187]"Just be yourself, that's the only way it can work."
[00:00:51.870]And now for all of you, embarking on your personal journeys

[00:00:56.290]it's time for you to discover your true selves,
