- [00:00:01.090]Who doesn't love game day at Memorial Stadium?
- [00:00:04.820]Who doesn't love the enthusiasm,
- [00:00:06.930]the absolute commitment and passion
- [00:00:09.290]that goes with being part of Husker Nation?
- [00:00:12.630]When this entire stadium fills up
- [00:00:14.740]and becomes the third largest city in our state,
- [00:00:17.640]you can feel palpably,
- [00:00:19.290]the enthusiasm, the love,
- [00:00:21.500]and the passion for what's happening.
- [00:00:24.120]But would you be surprised to know
- [00:00:25.490]that 34% of America's work force
- [00:00:28.810]shares that passion for their work place
- [00:00:30.950]and for their work.
- [00:00:32.020]That means that close to 70% of America's work force
- [00:00:36.560]actually is either neutral or
- [00:00:38.850]disengaged from their work.
- [00:00:40.520]They don't bring any of the game day experience
- [00:00:43.350]to the work they do Monday through Friday.
- [00:00:46.220]We're gonna try and find out why.
- [00:00:50.634](upbeat pop music)
- [00:01:21.050]So Eric would it surprise you to know that
- [00:01:24.110]only 34% of people in their work force,
- [00:01:27.880]in our work force today,
- [00:01:28.950]are actually engaged and fully enthusiastic
- [00:01:31.990]about the work they're doing?
- [00:01:33.590]That would surprise me actually.
- [00:01:35.930]Would it surprise you to know
- [00:01:37.260]that almost two thirds of America's work force
- [00:01:40.210]is either neutral or actively disengaged
- [00:01:43.100]with their work,
- [00:01:43.933]in other words they're more or less
- [00:01:46.647]on the fence about whether they even care
- [00:01:49.100]about the work that they're doing?
- [00:01:51.260]That does seem kind of surprising to hear.
- [00:01:53.170]Most people, they just want to have a job
- [00:01:55.400]that they like doing.
- [00:01:56.680]You should anyway.
- [00:01:58.070]Interesting enough, Gallup,
- [00:01:59.110]that's actually Gallup's results
- [00:02:00.640]its that about two thirds of folks
- [00:02:02.660]aren't really engaged at work.
- [00:02:04.920]What do you think gets in the way for people?
- [00:02:08.550]People being afraid to push themselves
- [00:02:10.270]to get outside their comfort zone,
- [00:02:11.550]probably, keep them complacent.
- [00:02:13.200]So as you think about your future,
- [00:02:14.788]what does a great career look like to you?
- [00:02:18.428]A great career at this point
- [00:02:21.000]looks like anything I am studying about
- [00:02:23.700]here in college.
- [00:02:25.860]I am studying to become a civil engineer,
- [00:02:28.490]I work in the civil engineering lab here on campus.
- [00:02:31.010]I'm having a ton of fun,
- [00:02:32.070]and I like it a lot.
- [00:02:33.130]So I guess anything in that regard
- [00:02:35.520]would be I guess something that
- [00:02:37.080]I'd be interested in.
- [00:02:38.360]So when you think about having a joyful career
- [00:02:42.545]and a purpose filled career,
- [00:02:44.750]what do you think are the elements
- [00:02:45.800]that would give you,
- [00:02:48.620]at the end of that career,
- [00:02:50.720]the sort of "I'm so glad I invested my time in that"?
- [00:02:54.920]Sure, I think it was kind of what Emma was talking about
- [00:02:57.170]where you just need to figure out
- [00:02:58.120]what your passions are
- [00:02:59.630]and what you really want to go after in life.
- [00:03:01.620]And choosing a career just aligns with that.
- [00:03:04.430]For me I was kind of pursuing,
- [00:03:06.400]I'm really big into computers,
- [00:03:07.500]so pursuing a career for me where I could
- [00:03:09.150]work around computers was kind of my passion,
- [00:03:10.930]and that's what I chose to do.
- [00:03:13.310]So what is it that stands between you
- [00:03:15.210]and being one of the 34 or one of the 66?
- [00:03:18.950]I think that's a really important question.
- [00:03:21.490]And entrepreneurship is really the answer
- [00:03:23.300]to that question.
- [00:03:24.780]The entrepreneur is always engaged,
- [00:03:26.870]they have no choice
- [00:03:27.880]because they've made the commitment.
- [00:03:29.100]They've stepped across the line.
- [00:03:30.420]They're in the game.
- [00:03:31.520]They made the decision to come,
- [00:03:33.310]hell or high waters,
- [00:03:34.230]this is gonna happen.
- [00:03:35.620]We're gonna find that customer,
- [00:03:36.970]we're gonna find the problem,
- [00:03:38.050]we're gonna solve it.
- [00:03:39.200]We're gonna commercialize the business.
- [00:03:41.690]I think what we've heard today
- [00:03:43.150]are so many wonderful thoughts,
- [00:03:44.960]and ideas and aspirations from the young
- [00:03:46.690]men and women who comprise the student body
- [00:03:48.810]at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:03:50.740]Every single one of them,
- [00:03:51.810]whether they want to be a craftsmen,
- [00:03:54.340]an animator, or they want to be a music educator,
- [00:03:56.560]or they want to be the next Stephen A.
- [00:03:58.870]And make Stephen A. go into retirement,
- [00:04:01.780]or as a medical professional,
- [00:04:03.970]whatever it is there's this odd path
- [00:04:06.350]if we only had the courage to pursue it.
- [00:04:08.830]I think the problem with the 66 is you end up settling.
- [00:04:12.590]You get caught in that place
- [00:04:14.050]where instead of working for your own vision,
- [00:04:15.990]your own passion, the thing that you believe in,
- [00:04:18.510]you start working for someone else.
- [00:04:20.660]And sooner or later what that someone else
- [00:04:22.440]has in mind for you,
- [00:04:23.580]is just not very much.
- [00:04:25.820]And so I think this is the time,
- [00:04:27.920]if you're 18, 19, 20 years old,
- [00:04:30.970]you can't wait.
- [00:04:32.770]If you start to settle today,
- [00:04:34.780]it looks like a pretty unhappy future for you.
