- [00:00:02.160]We welcome you back Countdown to Kickoff,
- [00:00:03.560]here in the Huskers Sports Network,
- [00:00:05.000]and each and every week during Countdown to kick-off,
- [00:00:07.180]a chance to sit down with the chancellor from
- [00:00:08.850]the University of Nebraska Lincoln,
- [00:00:10.010]Ronnie Green, who's been tour guide this week, right?
- [00:00:12.644](laughs)
- [00:00:13.684]You've got a big group of boosters and supporters
- [00:00:15.470]in the DC area for what, 48 hours now.
- [00:00:18.150]Yeah, Greg, so every year we have the opportunity
- [00:00:21.380]to take a group to one of our away games here in the season,
- [00:00:26.344]and to supporters who are suite owners
- [00:00:30.410]in the Memorial Stadium Complex,
- [00:00:32.990]and that was this weekend.
- [00:00:34.380]So, D.C. was a pretty special place to do that.
- [00:00:37.940]With so much to see and do here,
- [00:00:41.030]about 250 people involved in that trip since Thursday.
- [00:00:44.767]Wow.
- [00:00:45.600]So we spent time in the Supreme Court
- [00:00:47.520]with Justice Thomas yesterday,
- [00:00:49.390]Big Husker fan.
- [00:00:50.223]Huge Husker fan.
- [00:00:51.462](laughs)
- [00:00:52.295]His wife Virginia is a native Omahan,
- [00:00:54.990]and he kinda became a Husker fan,
- [00:00:58.040]but he is a serious, serious Husker fan.
- [00:01:00.840]Almost as serious as my wife,
- [00:01:02.470]but you know, that puts it right up there--
- [00:01:04.057]Close, close.
- [00:01:05.155]He talked with the group for an hour yesterday,
- [00:01:08.210]in the Supreme Court courtroom,
- [00:01:10.980]and talked about all of the sports,
- [00:01:12.920]talked about how excited he is about Husker athletics.
- [00:01:15.750]It was really a special kind of thing,
- [00:01:17.750]then we talked a little bit about the Supreme Court,
- [00:01:19.320]and what he does, and his day job too.
- [00:01:21.079]Yeah.
- [00:01:21.912]You know.
- [00:01:22.745]That other thing.
- [00:01:23.578]Yeah. So it's been a great, great trip.
- [00:01:24.640]Great group of people here, a lot of alumni here.
- [00:01:27.270]We're expecting to be in another one of those settings here,
- [00:01:30.850]in College Park today, with more Huskers,
- [00:01:33.820]than maybe, the other side.
- [00:01:35.910]And that's a cool thing to see, every time.
- [00:01:38.310]We love taking over stadiums.
- [00:01:39.910]Absolutely.
- [00:01:40.743]We knew that.
- [00:01:41.576]Absolutely.
- [00:01:42.409]And for you, this is almost home.
- [00:01:43.380]You grew up just south of here in Virginia, correct?
- [00:01:45.980]I did, D.C.'s old stomping grounds for me.
- [00:01:49.110]I spent a lot of my life in and out of D.C.
- [00:01:52.000]in various capacities and roles.
- [00:01:53.840]I've served in the U.S. Government earlier in my career,
- [00:01:57.020]and was based in an office
- [00:01:59.270]just literally a few miles from here,
- [00:02:01.090]a home a few miles from here in College Park.
- [00:02:04.304]I grew up about 250 miles south of here in Virginia.
- [00:02:08.889]We Virginians--
- [00:02:10.450]I was joking with our fans the last couple of days--
- [00:02:13.810]That terrapins, where I grew up in Virginia,
- [00:02:16.490]the word terrapin is pronounced tarpin.
- [00:02:18.798](laughs)
- [00:02:19.760]So I kept saying, "Beat the Tarps",
- [00:02:20.593]and people didn't know what I was talking about, right?
- [00:02:23.360]But, no, it's special to be here, and special to have
- [00:02:25.730]so many Husker fans here for this game this weekend.
- [00:02:28.360]We just were visiting with Johnny Holiday,
- [00:02:30.050]the long-time play by play boys for Maryland for a year.
- [00:02:32.740]I mean, they were a member of that
- [00:02:33.870]Atlantic Coast Conference for years.
- [00:02:35.480]Right.
- [00:02:36.313]Before jumping in the Big Ten, and I think it's been--
- [00:02:38.410]It's taken them awhile to kinda
- [00:02:39.470]feel like they're apart of it.
- [00:02:40.610]Yeah, I'm sure.
- [00:02:41.659]Like you said, 2016, that kinda time frame,
- [00:02:44.710]they came in Rutgers and Maryland came into the conference.
- [00:02:47.820]And after, Nebraska did.
- [00:02:49.790]We've matured into the conference,
- [00:02:51.570]and Maryland, I think, is doing the same.
- [00:02:54.830]You know, one of the other ties
- [00:02:56.320]I should mention about College Park here is
- [00:02:58.869]all Nebraska fans know the name Dave Rimington,
- [00:03:02.100]Dave played with Boomer Esiason in the pros.
- [00:03:04.880]That's right.
- [00:03:05.713]Has been affiliated with the Boomer Esiason Foundation
- [00:03:08.400]for a lot of his career.
- [00:03:10.880]Boomer played here, at the University of Maryland,
- [00:03:13.730]so, Dave actually sent me a message a couple of days ago,
- [00:03:17.170]told me where I needed to go eat,
- [00:03:18.510]told me where I needed to go think about things.
- [00:03:20.568](laughs)
- [00:03:21.420]So, another tie of Nebraska,
- [00:03:25.530]really do College Park here as well.
- [00:03:28.020]I miss Dave.
- [00:03:28.853]I haven't seen Dave in awhile.
- [00:03:29.700]Well, this weekend leads into the Thanksgiving holiday week,
- [00:03:33.690]it's a short week of classes on campus.
- [00:03:35.930]A lot of students will be traveling,
- [00:03:37.350]we want them all to travel safely when they head back home.
- [00:03:40.200]It's a good time for family, and go get some food
- [00:03:43.970]for the major focus.
- [00:03:45.110]But, nowhere is food more of a
- [00:03:47.650]strength of research and education than at Nebraska.
- [00:03:50.520]How far and wide does the
- [00:03:51.680]university's expertise in food stretch?
- [00:03:54.870]Well, you know, Thanksgiving every year for us,
- [00:03:57.510]is a time that we actually think about that a lot, right?
- [00:04:00.850]We have so much to be thankful for in our lives,
- [00:04:03.300]and we celebrate that, of course,
- [00:04:04.930]with the Thanksgiving holiday.
- [00:04:06.980]As you said, that's coming here very soon.
- [00:04:09.640]A lot of emphasis on turkey
- [00:04:11.560]and other things here in a few days.
- [00:04:13.720]But, Nebraska, of course, is a breadbasket for the world.
- [00:04:19.860]Agriculture is such a central part of the
- [00:04:21.980]economy of Nebraska,
- [00:04:23.680]the region that we're blessed to live in.
- [00:04:26.300]And the university, for most of it's history,
- [00:04:30.340]has been an international leader in agriculture, and food,
- [00:04:34.830]and natural resources research innovation and education,
- [00:04:38.610]continues to be a world leader
- [00:04:40.220]across a number of those fields,
- [00:04:41.660]whether you're talking about crop agriculture,
- [00:04:44.330]or animal agriculture, or the food system.
- [00:04:46.960]The production of food, and putting it on the plate.
- [00:04:50.882]For consumers around the world.
- [00:04:53.830]I was reading earlier this week, the average family,
- [00:04:57.850]they always estimate the cost of a Thanksgiving meal
- [00:05:01.100]for an average family in the U.S. is $48.
- [00:05:04.263]There's nowhere else in the world
- [00:05:05.930]you can have that abundance in food,
- [00:05:08.160]and safe and nutritious high-quality food,
- [00:05:11.220]like we have here, in this country.
- [00:05:13.290]And so proud of the work we do to sustain that,
- [00:05:17.500]to grow that, to innovate that everyday.
- [00:05:20.830]I'm a cattle geneticist myself,
- [00:05:24.070]I had a great steak, by the way, here the other night.
- [00:05:25.966]Oh, good for you.
- [00:05:28.160]I was at a seafood restaurant,
- [00:05:29.550]but I've got to have a great steak no matter where I go.
- [00:05:32.460]And we have leading people who are leading the innovation
- [00:05:37.590]to do that work and produce those products everyday.
- [00:05:42.520]Everything from cattle and feeding production
- [00:05:47.364]to innovative cropping systems, to food safety research,
- [00:05:51.180]to water research that's so important,
- [00:05:53.580]and underlies the food system that we have.
- [00:05:56.650]So, I'm thankful for that.
- [00:05:58.410]Also, here at this time of year,
- [00:06:00.290]that this institution has been one that's led
- [00:06:03.840]in that area for so many years,
- [00:06:06.276]and continues to be a leader in all of those sectors.
- [00:06:09.520]A lot of folks are going to be headed
- [00:06:10.540]to the grocery store this weekend to get some food
- [00:06:13.920]and preparations for the big day on Thursday.
- [00:06:16.100]So, I want to ask you about Nebraska Extension.
- [00:06:19.020]What kind of outreach does Nebraska Extension offer
- [00:06:21.740]for those that are getting ready for Thanksgiving?
- [00:06:23.550]Well, you know Greg, most people, I think,
- [00:06:26.100]tend to traditionally think of Extension as
- [00:06:28.840]working within local communities,
- [00:06:31.420]but especially with agricultural producers,
- [00:06:34.180]with farmers, with people in the field, so to speak.
- [00:06:37.550]But a big part of Extension actually, historically,
- [00:06:40.900]has been in human nutrition.
- [00:06:43.490]And in understanding the quality of food,
- [00:06:46.300]and the safety of food, and the use of food.
- [00:06:49.410]We used to call it Home Ec in the olden days.
- [00:06:52.050]Now, it's really a family of consumer sciences.
- [00:06:56.065]But we have a huge effort in Extension around food,
- [00:06:59.380]and around the safety and quality and nutritious value
- [00:07:02.470]of food, and use of food.
- [00:07:04.450]Our Extension system delivers that everyday.
- [00:07:09.100]So, especially at Thanksgiving, you know,
- [00:07:11.290]as people are thinking about
- [00:07:13.160]gathering around the table with their families,
- [00:07:15.460]and their friends and their loved ones,
- [00:07:18.020]I'm reminded of how much impact that work has.
- [00:07:23.070]Throughout Nebraska Extension with the
- [00:07:25.100]University of Nebraska.
- [00:07:26.360]Reaches out to all the counties around the state.
- [00:07:28.267]Absolutely.
- [00:07:29.420]Throughout the state,
- [00:07:30.360]from end to end, and north, south to east to west.
- [00:07:33.010]Yeah, good stuff.
- [00:07:33.843]Well welcome, kinda, back home for you,
- [00:07:35.580]and I know it's been a wonderful week.
- [00:07:37.370]We've been seeing pictures on Twitter,
- [00:07:38.910]and out there it looks like the fans have
- [00:07:40.310]came with you from Lincoln
- [00:07:41.580]and all parts of around the state,
- [00:07:43.110]had a great time.
- [00:07:44.270]I think they have, I think they've enjoyed themselves,
- [00:07:46.470]I'm actually kinda-- we're looking out here,
- [00:07:48.497]around the stadium as we talk,
- [00:07:50.300]and I'm floored at how the trees have held their color here.
- [00:07:53.800]Me too.
- [00:07:54.697]You know, I grew up in this region,
- [00:07:57.460]and I've remarked to several people about
- [00:07:59.670]how dramatic the colors are, the fall.
- [00:08:02.710]I have to admit, I miss the trees a little bit.
- [00:08:05.356]Yeah.
- [00:08:06.189]We have great trees in Nebraska,
- [00:08:07.022]but the density of the trees here,
- [00:08:09.710]and just the beautiful colors that still have held on here,
- [00:08:14.440]pretty late in the season, it's a beautiful thing to see.
- [00:08:17.030]Sure is.
- [00:08:17.863]Looking forward to a great game,
- [00:08:18.696]and glad to be here in Maryland.
- [00:08:19.810]Go big red.
- [00:08:20.643]Enjoy your Thanksgiving, we'll see you next Friday
- [00:08:22.190]for the Iowa game.
- [00:08:23.023]Ronnie Green with us here on Countdown to Kickoff.
- [00:08:24.860]Our weekly chat with the chancellor from the
- [00:08:26.340]University of Nebraska.
