- [00:00:00.000](upbeat music)
- [00:00:05.550]Long tradition here of the Horticulture Club
- [00:00:08.070]going into the holiday season with poinsettia sales.
- [00:00:11.550]We're standing here looking out
- [00:00:12.760]at all these beautiful poinsettias
- [00:00:15.040]that I'm sure the club has been working on
- [00:00:17.940]for how long?
- [00:00:19.190]We planted them the Sunday before classes started
- [00:00:22.750]in August. Okay.
- [00:00:24.070]It took probably five hours to get them all
- [00:00:26.460]in their respective pots.
- [00:00:28.090]How easy is it to get a poinsettia to grow?
- [00:00:30.950]They're trees.
- [00:00:31.980]Right.
- [00:00:32.813]They are woody perennials,
- [00:00:33.646]so they can be very tall, they look like trees,
- [00:00:36.680]but in order to get the lovely colors,
- [00:00:39.390]we have to change the light requirement
- [00:00:41.410]so that they have short days and long nights
- [00:00:44.890]'cause that stimulates the color.
- [00:00:46.690]So you're a part of the Horticulture Club as well, Robert?
- [00:00:49.110]That's right.
- [00:00:49.943]Horticulture Club is a really great opportunity
- [00:00:51.460]for students of any major, studying anything,
- [00:00:54.490]to learn more about how plants are grown.
- [00:00:58.240]We have guest speakers from the university
- [00:01:00.380]as well as private industry come in
- [00:01:02.830]and speak to us about their professions.
- [00:01:05.150]And it's a great social connection.
- [00:01:07.780]And we take these large foils
- [00:01:09.610]for the large eight-inch pots,
- [00:01:11.620]and we just drop them in there, fluff it up a little bit,
- [00:01:15.430]and then it's good to go. It's ready to go.
- [00:01:17.907]The red goes with the white.
- [00:01:20.789]See, look.
- [00:01:21.622](festive music)
- [00:01:25.045]See?
- [00:01:28.080]Is it really true that poinsettias are poisonous?
- [00:01:32.360]I've never tried eating one myself.
- [00:01:33.751]You haven't?
- [00:01:34.584]No, they look tasty. You've not just
- [00:01:35.440]taken a munch?
- [00:01:36.890]Maybe next time.
- [00:01:37.723]Okay. (laughs)
- [00:01:39.380]These poinsettias on this bench,
- [00:01:41.650]the white and the red, or the scarlet and cream,
- [00:01:44.530]are for the Pinnacle Bank Arena commencement ceremony
- [00:01:48.240]for graduation this year.
- [00:01:50.090]That's really cool.
- [00:01:51.690]All right, so what we do is we take a pot,
- [00:01:53.710]and we have to put a little bit of media in it.
- [00:01:56.480]And then these are some Zygocactus or Christmas cactus.
- [00:02:00.620]And put that one in.
- [00:02:02.110]That way, you kinda have a balance in the whole pot,
- [00:02:04.280]and we can get that spread that we wanna have in there.
- [00:02:07.250]So then we would just finish it off
- [00:02:08.840]with a little bit of potting mix, yep, loosely.
- [00:02:11.630]A lot of our classes are using production activities
- [00:02:14.420]such as what we're doing here.
- [00:02:16.250]Kind of fun to get my fingers in the dirt.
- [00:02:18.440]There you go. (laughs)
- [00:02:19.273]It's one of my favorite things in the world to do.
- [00:02:22.570]Now, of course,
- [00:02:25.660]a red poinsettia is the best.
- [00:02:30.900]Go Big Red.
- [00:02:31.878](festive music)
