- [00:00:00.170]As promised, here's the chancellor of UNL,
- [00:00:02.540]Chancellor Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:04.170]Doin' good, John, how about you?
- [00:00:06.250]Okay, a trip to Iowa usually is a moment
- [00:00:08.750]for optimism for volleyball fans
- [00:00:10.890]and you've got a lot of reasons to be optimistic,
- [00:00:13.190]in part because some of your student athletes
- [00:00:15.000]are having a lot of success.
- [00:00:17.080]And one in particular is no stranger
- [00:00:18.700]to earning a big national award.
- [00:00:21.210]Well, you know, we have a long legacy
- [00:00:23.580]and history of athletes excelling
- [00:00:25.620]at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:00:27.060]Husker Athletics has had that reputation
- [00:00:28.940]for many, many decades.
- [00:00:30.720]We're so proud of the number of Academic All-Americans
- [00:00:34.190]that we talk about all of the time.
- [00:00:36.265]We lead the nation in that category
- [00:00:39.270]by quite a little bit
- [00:00:40.220]and recently we added another big honor
- [00:00:42.890]for one of our student athletes.
- [00:00:45.880]Angela Mercurio, track and field athlete who graduated
- [00:00:49.140]this past year, was named the 2019 NCAA Woman of the Year.
- [00:00:55.120]Big, huge deal, very well-deserved by Angela,
- [00:00:58.460]a very top student.
- [00:01:00.000]She was a biochemistry major here at the university,
- [00:01:03.730]is now on the path to pursue medical education,
- [00:01:08.070]3.99 plus grade point average,
- [00:01:12.010]just an outstanding student, an outstanding athlete.
- [00:01:14.720]And she becomes only the second University of Nebraska
- [00:01:18.420]student athlete to receive that honor.
- [00:01:20.840]A former recipient, a Husker volleyball player,
- [00:01:24.930]national champion Billie Winsett-Fletcher,
- [00:01:27.450]who earned the honor in 1996,
- [00:01:29.960]and with she and Angela being recognized in that way
- [00:01:34.030]we are the only school in the Big Ten
- [00:01:37.110]to now have two women who have been honored
- [00:01:40.650]as the Woman of the Year by the NCAA.
- [00:01:45.350]So I think that speaks to the strength of the university
- [00:01:48.560]and the strength of our success in our student athletes.
- [00:01:52.160]Congratulations to Angela, huge honor for her,
- [00:01:54.780]and brings great acclaim
- [00:01:56.070]to the University of Nebraska as well.
- [00:01:57.890]Absolutely, now Nebraska is, of course,
- [00:02:01.280]a member of the Big Ten since 2011
- [00:02:04.620]and there are a lot of benefits that Nebraska receives
- [00:02:07.840]because of that affiliation.
- [00:02:10.140]And what are some of those that we outside
- [00:02:12.290]the university might not be fully aware of?
- [00:02:14.560]Well, we've talked a lot since going into the Big Ten
- [00:02:18.010]now in our eighth year, about the academic prestige
- [00:02:22.100]of the Big Ten Conference
- [00:02:23.730]as well as the athletic accomplishments of the conference.
- [00:02:27.750]What's known as the Big Ten Academic Alliance
- [00:02:30.780]is the unification or the working together
- [00:02:33.900]of all 14 members of the Big Ten
- [00:02:36.220]through that academic alliance.
- [00:02:37.313]It's the only thing like it in higher education
- [00:02:41.060]at the collegiate level in a conference way
- [00:02:44.600]and they work together across all aspects of the university.
- [00:02:48.860]So all the deans of various disciplines meet together
- [00:02:51.940]and work together.
- [00:02:53.530]The libraries work together across the Big Ten.
- [00:02:56.450]Information Technology and the whole IT space
- [00:02:59.320]works together across the Big Ten
- [00:03:01.590]and in particular recently in the libraries world
- [00:03:05.550]Claire Stewart, who is our new Dean
- [00:03:07.910]of the University Libraries.
- [00:03:09.190]She came to Nebraska this past year in July
- [00:03:12.650]to become the lead of our libraries
- [00:03:14.550]across the university systems,
- [00:03:16.360]certainly here at the flagship,
- [00:03:17.690]but also works with the other libraries
- [00:03:19.720]on the other campuses.
- [00:03:21.000]And she's playing a particularly important role
- [00:03:23.520]in the Big Ten Academic Alliance at this time,
- [00:03:26.771]where they're working to develop a highly integrated
- [00:03:30.160]collection across the Big Ten institutions.
- [00:03:33.974]The Big Ten libraries represent 22% of the print titles
- [00:03:40.010]that are available in all North American libraries.
- [00:03:42.640]It tells you a little bit about the size
- [00:03:44.200]and prestige of those 14 institutions.
- [00:03:47.100]And they are working together now
- [00:03:50.110]with Claire as a leader to think strategically
- [00:03:54.440]about what gets put into those collections
- [00:03:58.070]across the Big Ten institutions
- [00:04:00.960]so that the collective of library information
- [00:04:04.870]across the institutions is the most powerful
- [00:04:07.682]and available and accessible, if you will, in that way.
- [00:04:12.560]Claire came to us from the University of Minnesota,
- [00:04:14.950]one of our Big Ten colleagues,
- [00:04:16.660]when she came here to join us this past July
- [00:04:19.590]and is already recognized in the conference
- [00:04:22.310]as a leader in this space,
- [00:04:23.790]so exciting for us to be leading that through her,
- [00:04:28.760]her vision and her leadership
- [00:04:31.040]to have a more integrated library resource system
- [00:04:33.760]across the Big Ten institutions.
- [00:04:35.880]So if a sophomore comes to you now from Burwell,
- [00:04:38.550]does she have access to all the books
- [00:04:41.470]across all libraries across the 14 schools
- [00:04:44.020]of the Big Ten, University of Illinois, Michigan?
- [00:04:46.150]Well, would have access to be able
- [00:04:48.716]to get to that information absolutely across the Big Ten.
- [00:04:51.880]And, you know, a lot of folks recognize
- [00:04:55.060]I think what a great opportunity it is
- [00:04:57.300]for the University of Nebraska,
- [00:04:58.940]has been and is for us to be a part of the Big Ten,
- [00:05:01.880]and this is just one more example.
- [00:05:05.140]Libraries are changing, John.
- [00:05:06.510]I mean, we know that libraries,
- [00:05:09.740]the old traditional library where you went to the stacks,
- [00:05:12.440]is a different kind of library form
- [00:05:14.960]than what we've had in the past,
- [00:05:16.430]it continues to evolve.
- [00:05:17.910]Even for us here at the University of Nebraska,
- [00:05:20.930]Love Library on our main campus,
- [00:05:22.720]C.Y. Thompson Library on east campus,
- [00:05:25.770]both have been undergoing revisions
- [00:05:28.450]in terms of what that library does as a study space,
- [00:05:32.250]as a learning space, as well as being the repository,
- [00:05:36.850]if you will, of all of those print titles.
- [00:05:40.060]So big deal in the Big Ten to be coordinated in this way
- [00:05:44.640]and one of the many benefits of being a part
- [00:05:46.650]of this great conference.
